Sometimes the clichés are just want you need!

I often see it written on here when someone is feeling low about themselves, or wanting to feel put together to put on some fake tan get a new haircut etc. I always think that sounds like a load of effort for very little reward! And a bit of a cliche that a woman would feel better after some pampering.

But... I'm about to go on holiday and am nearing the end of mat leave. I saved a pot of money to spend on beauty treatments, and did some myself. In the last week I've had a gel manicure, waxed all the bits I can myself and got a bikini wax, fake tanned, gave myself a pedicure, got balayage in my hair for the first time and had LVL and my eyebrows laminated for the first time. I also bought some holiday clothes and focused on what makes me feel good in classic shapes that I can wear for a few holidays to come, after reading on here what others have gone for.

No way could I go to this effort all the time! But I feel a million dollars!!!

So I just wanted to say thanks to everyone on this board Grin you might be finally pulling me out of my low maintenance ways!!!

Oh wow. That is some Glow Up.
Good on you- you never know you might have the bug now and keep going!

I also think it is possible to do this without spending very much extra money. 🙂

  1. curate your wardrobe. Sort into colours or categories. Iron anything crumpled and repair anything that needs it. Try on combinations to find your favourites.

  2. Clean and polish shoes.

  3. Style hair with whatever styling tools you have to hand could be a blow dry, straightener smooth and straight, curled under, flicks, waves, heated rolls/ Velcro rollers for a variety of curls.

  4. Tint hair. Either with shop bought products or more the old fashioned root with stains made from household ingredients, coffee, camomile tea, red bush tea, black tea, turmeric. (I do the latter myself pretty successfully).

  5. Use eyebrow pencil/ matte eyeshadow/ brow product / hair gel / hairspray to colour and style eyebrows.

  6. Exercise! Great for toning, firming, getting rid of excess fat and generally making you feel good.

  7. Give hair a trim. Lots of styles are pretty easy. Look at YouTube tutorials. (Again I do this and am pretty satisfied with results)

  8. Try out some make up tutorials if you fancy changing your make up look.

  9. budget shops often have some really inexpensive makeup if you fancy trying some new colours. You can then invest in more premium versions if you find a colour you really like.

Please tell me more about tinting your hair with household ingredients - I’m intrigued.

@Lilsoph I make up a tea with camomile, red bush tea, instant coffee and a tiny bit of turmeric. It tints the white hairs in my hair blonde. I am over 50% grey but my hair looks blonde with some brown streaks in. It's good as it is transparent so you can maintain multi tonal hair colour. I just make up a pot, let it cook and saturate dry clean hair. I leave it in and blow dry. It stains the hair and lasts at least a couple of washes.

Cool not cook!

That sounds very intriguing! Do you use equal amounts of the teas and coffee, and then just a pinch of turmeric?

People LAMINATE their eye brows.....?!

meanderingbrook · 05/09/2023 17:43

@LuckyPeonies no, but your could. I do 6 camomile teabags to 2 red bush and half a tsp instant coffee and a teeny tiny pinch of turmeric (too much turns the hair canary yellow!). Do a strand test first to see if you like the colour! 😁

Do keep up Roar darling, it's all the rage!! (I did try it but looked angry and ridiculous, best left to people who still have young perfect skin and cheekbones I think Grin)

meanderingbrook · 05/09/2023 17:46

Camomile = golden hue. Mild lightening effect
Red bush = red tones. Stops the turmeric from looking too cool a yellow
Coffee = caramel tones
Turmeric = yellow/gold tones. Is potent. Takes away the grey.

This was my initial response when the lady suggested it! But actually it looks great. Just like my eyebrows at their very best and they STAY that way. I'm impressed!

Thank you. I’ve got some grey so I’m going to try this.

Thank you!! I shall take your advice and test, i don’t believe canary yellow would suit. 😄
