What Should I Wear to a Concert?

ICanBuyMyOwnBooks · 04/09/2023 22:39

I'm going to a gig with young teen DC. I'm in my 40s but don't want to look like the mum in the corner. I'd rather channel a Chrissie Hynde adjacent look. --I wish I looked like Chrissie!--

I've recently lost lots of weight so need new jeans, and a new jacket , anyway. I'm size 12/10 bottoms and size 8/10 in tops. I was thinking of jeans, boots (I have nice knee-high boots and also biker boots). Maybe a biker jacket or blazer?

I don't want to look over-dressed and also don't want to look dowdy. Help!

I am not in the slightest bit cool, but what about jeans and a band t-shirt like the Rolling Stones or actually maybe a more obscure band?

@FlemCandango

That sounds like a lovely night out with your daughter. :)

I never have luck buying at charity shops now. I’ve been various sizes of fat over the the past 5 years and I can’t find anything in those stores.

Before putting on weight I’d often score a good second hand dress. Or shirt.

Can I ask where you buy your vintage style new dresses?

TIA

Cheers MessyMyrtle it was a great day out.

I get dresses from Get Cutie, as I love the fabrics. I also like a classic band tee shirt, jeans and docs combo. I don't think I have really moved on much from what I liked to wear as a student which is probably wrong in some style rule book - but with getting older I have found I don't care so much about that. How I "ought" to dress!? Get to fuck! I dress in a way that brings me joy and feels comfortable.

moresleepthanks · 05/09/2023 15:22

I've been wearing black shorts and dms and then a top appropriate to act this summer for mum accompanying role, sparkly red top for Taylor etc.

I enjoy earrings but realistically no one else will care. Bees for Beyoncé, snakes for Taylor, cowboy boots for Shania. I'm not cool and I'm not trying to be.

I did get cold in some of the outdoor venues and couldn't always just buy a merch hoodie ( looking at you Taylor!) So I take a jacket now, usually a leather jacket.

I will transition to jeans and dunks for the autumn hip hop concerts with ds but realistically when over 20 you actually turn invisible.

ICanBuyMyOwnBooks · 05/09/2023 17:59

Thanks for all the tips and I'm loving the stories of all the concerts @moresleepthanks and @FlemCandango
I thought of reverting to my student outfit (since I'll be surrounded by students!) which would be all black and docs ... and a pint of cider and black Grin
Also considered shorts - as I've been alternating through a few different pairs this summer.
I think I need to buy new jeans anyway. Does anyone have any tips for decent ones? Not skinnies as I still have hips.
I usually go to concerts with DH and don't give a second thought to how I dress but he's ill and this will be the first proper concert with DC, so I've been trawling for ideas and everything just seems meh. But I think I'm probably feeling meh and that's the reason. Your lovely posts have made me feel a bit excited. Flowers

You could get a completely unfussy dress from somewhere like:

Alexandra Golovanoff

American Vintage

Raey @ Matches

depending on your budget and inclination. (There are new ways to look cool …)

I love some of these dresses eg the stripy ones from Golovanoff, the denim ones from American Vintage and Raey, and some of the t-shirt dresses from Raey too. They're fab!

I usually wear jeans and a top to gigs then either doc martens or trainers depending on weather and whether than are my 3/4 length jeans or full length. Jacket, coat or nothing depends on weather. Most people are dressed like me

gogomoto · 05/09/2023 18:07

As for where to shop, most of my things are second hand, but the original brands could be anything from reiss to white stuff

AllOfThemWitches · 05/09/2023 18:43

I don't understand why the band has to be kept secret...

ICanBuyMyOwnBooks · 05/09/2023 20:33

Two reasons
One - I'd be surprised if any posters know them.
Two - I have RL friends on here who would recognise the band name (because I've mentioned them in RL) and I don't want them to be able to link to my other posts.

I last went to a gig about four years ago. It was outdoor and hot. I wore a long tshirt dress and converse. I don't think I looked out of place.

When I was a regular gig goer (20s/30s), I always wore jeans, tshirt and converse. Always.

Honestly I think unless you wear quite 'prim' clothes, your hairstyle will say a lot more about you than what you are wearing. So style your hair into an edgy style, have fun with make up especially lipstick and have a fun time!

Hah fair enough. I LOVE going to gigs and I'm very nosy. To answer the actual question, my outfit of choice for the last one I went to was a slip dress, fishnet tights and boots. I think boots will be absolutely fine even if it is warm, unless they're UGGS or something.

ICanBuyMyOwnBooks · 06/09/2023 10:08

Grin I do not own Uggs (no offence to any Ugg wearers!). I have biker boots and knee-high boots and ankle boots. But tbh the ankle boots are not comfortable enough for a concert.
I'm not sure if I'm brave enough for a slip dress and fishnets but I have both so might try that combination just for a change.
I'm also thinking about @MessyMyrtle 's hair comment. My hair has reached the stage (shoulder length) where I dither for a few weeks about growing it out or chopping it off. Usually chopping it off wins.

You don’t have to have your hair cut if you are in the process of growing it. I would search the internet for edgy hair styles and hair dos. Also think of your favourite musicians and celebrities and check out their hair.

I know it’s a hair look that is done very commonly, but hair just parted on the side and slicked back (behind the ears) and down can look really good. Or slicked straight back.

You can do a practice run.

LBOCS2 · 06/09/2023 13:03

I go to a lot of (rock and or metal) gigs and festivals and wear almost exactly the same thing to all of them - jeans (black or blue denim), converse, black cap sleeve T-shirt. I don't take a bag, just my phone and a debit card in my pocket.

If I desperately need a jacket I usually wear my leather one (depending on budget I like allsaints if you're looking to buy) but generally try to avoid it because you invariably either end up holding it or queuing forever for a cloakroom, neither of which are fun. If you time it right you can go from transport option to pub to gig venue without being outside in the cold for too long and thus avoid taking one!

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 10/09/2023 18:06

I think it mainly depends if there’s a “look” that goes with the band that you want to embrace.

We went to see Busted last night with our grown up kids and it was SO hot I didn’t care what I looked like as long as it was cool. I wore a short cotton frock and Nike Dunks. However, when we go to see Taylor Swift DD and I are going all out with the sequins 😂.

Whatever you wear, comfy (flat) shoes are paramount. You will get stepped on dozens of times and get beer spilt on you! 😁

Oblomov23 · 10/09/2023 18:21

Where whatever you want. Comfy footwear. I wore a green dress and sketchers to The Killers and The Weeknd, ds2 wore shorts and a t-shirt. All good.

IncreasinglyGrumpy · 10/09/2023 19:05

Jeans and tee - anything you don't mind getting hot and sticky and it's normally dark so nobody will judge- im 58 and still going to gigs (louder the better)!

KM123456 · 11/09/2023 00:52

Get a see through stadium bag, and check the venue about any restrictions. Dress down, but make sure you clearyour clothes with your daughter. Her opinion matters in this kind of outing.

nagnagnag · 11/09/2023 06:44

How about this top with your jeans? It is quite transparent so needs a vest top underneath it.
