Black trousers/skirt, preferably polyester as no creasing or colour fade. Top of one colour or print. Black jacket if really smart needed. Loafer shoes small heel, no flip flops or toes showing

Easily bought from M and S if ona budget. Or H&M

Others may not agree, but this is what I know of office wear

Stripeypyjamas · 04/09/2023 12:01

I think that's office wear pre covid. Now it really depends on the organization. It could be a midi dress with trainers from Tu or a £3000 grey suit.

Ýsette · 04/09/2023 12:13

Read the OP. She's asking for smart business attire, So I'm bang in the middle then 🙄
As I said, it's what I know. I would never recommend a grey midi dress and trainers for someone asking what smart office attire is

It’s been a while - previous profession involved a fair bit of HoL / Privy Council attendance - but I’d say ‘clothes that convey the weight of the matters under discussion’ …

Or shorts or jeans if you work in my office. I still don’t understand how the individuals concerned are getting away with it

I would say that you don't need to wear black but nothing too garish or short/revealing and definitely no trainers.

Gruelle · 04/09/2023 12:53

Essentially the female (?) equivalent of a men’s tailored suit. Aiming to look more Savile Row than M&S (even if it is M&S!).

I used to wear a white or striped cotton or silk shirt and black or grey skirt suit, black tights, black court shoes or stilettos - but I was dressed like that for the working day anyway.

donkra · 04/09/2023 12:58

For men or women?

Men: lounge suit, collared shirt, tie. Oxfords/brogues.

Women: smart trousers or pencil skirt. Or block coloured pencil dress. Blouse, shirt, or plain t-shirt. Jacket optional. Shoes: closed toe, options include courts, ankle boots, loafers, brogues. Unobtrusive jewellery. Look at The Fold for inspiration.

ScarlettSunset · 04/09/2023 13:54

I usually wear a dress and jacket with ankle boots. Smart dress used to be standard in the places I have worked but less so now.

LaGiaconda · 04/09/2023 14:00

Thanks. I think I can make myself look respectable - but not very convincing....

Presumably they’re supposed to be convinced by what you have to say? Or at the very least by your attendance.

Definitely don’t overthink or get stressed about your outfit. Clean, ironed, simple - the simpler the better + smart comfortable shoes is all you need.
