Ways to be scammed on Vinted?

GreyBlackBay · 04/09/2023 09:36

I'm pretty new to Vinted, only order new with tags stuff and relatively inexpensive. Nothing bad so far.

However last night I was browsing and saw a NWT item from the current stock, £250 selling £35. He had literally just listed it and I bought it before someone else snapped it up. The guy has no selling history.

I was sort of expecting a cancelled transaction, I thought probably an accident with the price but this morning he sends me a pic of the label with tracking code.

Reasons I'm concerned :
If I try to view the item I get 'item no loner exists' message
He charged £2 for postage but the label is royal mail 48hrs and says 1kg so not cheap
The pic he sent didn't show my address on the parcel
It was far too cheap!

Hopefully it'll appear on the tracking today. Hopefully if it doesn't cone here he has to actually prove it was sent to this address.

Dont suppose this is a well known scam?

Eta it's a House of Bruar tweed jacket.

I hope you're wrong but this doesn't look good. I can still click on items I bought and have received- they appear as "sold" in a green bar across the bottom but they are there.

Icycloud · 04/09/2023 09:57

i was scammed on vinted I was sold shoes advertised as new with tags and payed £30 but they had signs of use and were the worst quality I had ever seen, vinted sided with the seller

Isthatarealname · 04/09/2023 10:00

There is loads on vinted at the moment. A lot send you something different to what you purchased, like a cheap t-shirt, in the hope that you won't click you have a problem on vinted in time, so you can't do anything about it. I think you could possibly raise it with vinted now that you are worried it is a scam and see what they say.

GreyBlackBay · 04/09/2023 12:59

Yep, been on Forum and it's a scam.

I have reported to vinted and will keep a close eye on the tracking. Apparently there are various ways they try to run the scam so they get the payout. I'm on my guard now.

I don’t think I’d feel safe buying anything from Vinted tbh very much Caveat Emptor - if you do not click the ‘I have a problem’ tab you are screwed as they will always decide a case in favour of seller 😐☘️👍🏿

CointreauVersial · 04/09/2023 13:09

So how does the scam work?

I'm always nervous about Vinted.

nzborn · 04/09/2023 13:56

I got scammed this way I purchased an item a couple of days later they said thought they sent the wrong parcel to me and would resend the right one. I sent a message saying should I click on the I have a problem tab, they didn't reply I didn't want to be mean.
Time delay as I didn't receive the right parcel and when I contacted vinted they said paid out as I hadn't challenged the item.
So I have this parcel hanging around work which I don't want and vinted have their cut and the seller has my money.

GreyBlackBay · 04/09/2023 14:22

A lot sound like as @nzborn says. They put tracking on then send wrong item but tell you and say they'll resend. Vinted can see you've received it so if you don't say there is a problem they pay out.

Or they send the wrong item then swear blind you're lying, your weird against theirs. Ebay usually side with the buyer, vinted with the seller.

I think mines going to be a bit different. They chose to send royal mail so it's not automatically tracked in Vinted. Maybe they'll just keep me waiting around and it will automatically pay out.

The seller has blocked me, so def a scam.

Given the way it works I can't really see what they can do other than sending you the wrong thing and trying to keep you talking whilst the time to report it runs out.

I dunt know what I was thinking, it was late at night and I wasn't thinking really. Lesson learned and hopefully I'll get my money back.

I use Vinted loads but take the view that if it sounds too good to be true it probably is!

I only tend to buy low value items eg kids clothes , never buy anything designer or that could be fake.

I also report anything weird to Vinted asap, don’t wait around .

I’ve not had a problem and done about 500 transactions now (both as seller & buyer)

AlwaysaLittleBitTired · 04/09/2023 14:36

I hope you get it sorted op.

I recently took advantage of the buyer protection on Vinted. I bought a beauty gift set (RRP £55, Vinted £25 with slightly damaged box) for DD. After I bought it the seller cancelled the transaction and issued an immediate refund. They messaged to say that they needed to change from Royal Mail to Evri. I couldn't figure out why, but (unlike me) continued with the transaction when they relisted, I paid, and they posted the item. All tracking information was there. The item arrived, but the gift box was empty of the expected contents. I could tell it was too light as soon as I picked it up.
Lots of messaging between me and the seller - who swore blind that I was the scammer and had obviously stolen the contents 🙄. They even offered me a number so I could call "their Dad" to sort it out.

Anyway, I made a claim through Vinted and they refunded me almost immediately. I think I was down a couple of quid for postage costs that's all. Chalked it up to experience, but pleased at how smoothly the claim process was.

On the flip side, I have successfully sold a dress (£150), a couple of low value items of clothing, and bought a couple of low value items on there too.

I'd say if it feels a bit off, then leave it. Otherwise proceed with caution.

whattodoforthebest2 · 04/09/2023 14:45

I've bought and sold quite a few things on Vinted. About a month ago, I bought a Karen Millen coat which was £35, NWT. The seller sent me a pic of the postage label but there was nothing to track, no reference. I looked an hour or so later and the item had disappeared but still showed as posted and was even listed again! I reported it to Visa (my payment method) and to Vinted. Visa suspended the payment and Vinted made me wait for a couple of weeks before cancelling the transaction and refunding my money. It sounds like exactly the same as your situation OP. Keep chasing them.

Mariposa123 · 04/09/2023 14:48

I had te exact same experience. Knew in my heart it was a scam but the shoes were perfect for an event I was going to and it seemed too good to pass up.

mine was sent via Royal Mail and they sent me a picture of the receipt with someone else’s name on. I didn’t get a reply when k queried the name and the account was quickly blocked.

I contacted vinted and they did their usual, ‘wait 2 weeks and contact us again if there is an issue’. I knew the item wasn’t coming so clicked I had a problem and said the item hadn’t arrived and showed them the wrong receipt. To vinted’s credit they refunded me pretty quickly.

sleepwhenidie · 04/09/2023 14:52

I think it pays to remember that if something looks too good to be true in terms of a bargain then it probably is. I bought a BNWT me&Em cashmere jumper that looked amazing and I saw it very soon after listing. But before I paid I noticed the exact same jumper for sale from someone else at twice the price, and the image in the one I bought was a mirror image of that one. Seller of first sweater also had no history/reviews. I cancelled the purchase. I think it’s affected my feedback score but not worth the risk.

Malbecmoron · 04/09/2023 15:27

I was refunded very quickly when I was sent something completely different. I contacted vinted as soon as it was received and sent them photos.

ploofmamoof · 04/09/2023 15:32

I love Vinted and have bought a lot of things through it. I only buy from sellers with really good ratings and double check if something seems too good to be true.
I recently ordered some trainees in a rush as they were exactly what I'd been looking for. As soon as it'd gone through I realised that the seller had no reviews. I thought shut I've messed up! It turned out fine and as my DH says everyone has to start somewhere, but I will try my best not to do that again in hurry!

dressedforcomfort · 04/09/2023 15:56

Sorry you got scammed, OP.

I think it is possible to have positive experiences with Vinted. I only buy from sellers who have lots of positive feedback and I only tend to buy goods that are new with tags or where the photos /written info are very good quality and you can see the item clearly. It's worth remembering that the vast majority of people on Vinted are just ordinary folk clearing out their wardrobe.

Also, don't use Inpost where possible - EVRI tends to be much more user friendly.

Wiii · 04/09/2023 17:21

Even the tracking label will be fake. I don't buy anything that's price is too good to believe off anyone who has no feedback.

I buy loads and touch wood haven't been scammed yet but you do need to be on your guard a bit, especially with designer items.

loveyoutothemoonandtosaturn · 04/09/2023 18:03

If you search Ray ban sunglasses you'll see loads of pairs listed. All in or around £30 and if you click you'll see the seller has no reviews yet. All of these would be a scam I'd say, same as brand new Veja trainers last week there were so many all priced far too cheap and again no reviews. If it looks too good to be true it definitely is. I also won't buy unless the seller has a good few reviews.

GreyBlackBay · 05/09/2023 09:27

An update. I contacted vinted and said I think I've bought a scam mainly because the item had disappeared from vinted and the seller has blocked me. Too early to have actually recieved anything.

Less than 24 hrs later they've cancelled transaction and issued refund which will take a few days.

Good service.

In future I'll have to apply the 'too good to be true' mentality. Which is a shame because twice in the past I've benefitted from relationship spats where he/she sells gifts for next to nothing to because she/he is an ungrateful b 🤣

I'm beginning to think that this happens a lot on Vinted and they don't care as long as they get fee.
I contacted them many times over not receiving the correct item and they just constantly quoted terms and conditions, I explained and asked them to be human beings and also asked my complaint to go to someone in higher authority they refused.
So I just stopped shopping for a while. however I have picked up some tips here which I will use in the future.

SatsumaNightmare · 05/09/2023 09:53

I adore Vinted and buy and sell on there all the time. Not been scammed but had a couple of items not as described. Always reported immediately and since I have photo evidence Vinted has always sided with me. I only buy from those with decent ratings if the item is more expensive.

Fishandchipsatthebeach · 05/09/2023 12:04

Oh the only scam I’ve fallen victim to is fake Solomon running trainers

dewclaw · 05/09/2023 13:15

I use Vinted lots, both to buy and sell.
I don't understand how you can get scammed as such as I have always had messages from Vinted to ask if the item had arrived and as expected and seller doesn't get paid unless you confirm. Any minor issues such as items in worse condition than expected have been quickly sorted out.
I do agree that anything that seems to good to be true probably is though!

But if you don't reply, doesn't the system just assume that all is good, and make the payout?
