Is there such a thing as an “everything” coat?

My wish list for a new coat (new as in Vinted will do as well but want a good brand) which will -

  1. Be black
  2. Be long and cover well past bum
  3. Be football and mud appropriate for standing around fields
  4. Not puff me up
  5. Be sleek and lovely to pop on to go on a dinner out
  6. be warm

There isn’t an “everything” coat is there?

I have a birthday and Christmas and another festival from country of origin coming up so spouse and parents can be heavily hinted to 🤣

Suggestions?

no help here but sounds great if it exists!

EmmaPaella · 03/09/2023 19:22

No. DM says in the old days people wore wool coats for most things in winter and got wet.

FKATondelayo · 03/09/2023 21:19

I don't think there is no. I spent years searching for the all purpose coat but it's a race to the bottom - basically you end up with something ugly and practical and feel depressed when you're out to dinner with a long black mud-stained anorak over your gorgeous outfit. You wouldn't (assuming you're not on the breadline) have one pair of shoes or one bra. Embrace having a coat-drobe.

FKATondelayo · 03/09/2023 21:21

Most of my coats are from the chazza, Uniqlo or Zara. I think it's better value and more practical to have 2 cheaper coats (say an elegant one & a parka) than one expensive one.

Combusting · 03/09/2023 21:28

Liking the idea of a coat drobe. Obviously I can’t be buying the entire selection in one go so let’s start. So far my current possessions include -

  1. A biker style leather jacket that’s seeing the leather beginning to crumble
  2. A long length Uniqlo coat which has been my all purpose staple for two years and will continue to be used for dog walks and footie and such
  3. What is a third I could add for elegance/length/wearing to work that’s still useful and warm?

Nice wool coat? Though hard to find these days. Hobbs or Jigsaw or Phase 8 or Ted Baker? Like this? Camel Overcoat | Camel Wrap Coat | Ted Baker UK Or Max Mara if you are feeling flush.

I have a lovely snuggly waterproof seasalt coat for football and winter walks, a lightweight seasalt coat for in between/wet weather that is a bit classy looking, a leather type jacket for nights out, a vintage wool beauty for fancy things. All bought secondhand from charity shops and Vinted. I have never been ok with just one coat!

You definitely need more than one coat. I got this last year and lived in it, so warm, water resistant and really long, the closest I’ve come to having just one coat, but I have a couple of wool-type wrap “coatigans” for smart and Teddy fleeces for when it’s not so cold. Plus rain coats, blazers. https://www.craghoppers.com/womens-narlia-insulated-hooded-jacket-black/?gclid=CjwKCAjw3dCnBhBCEiwAVvLcuw7k7cH3WgP8_dlgFFuIN54KZ89K3qM5n4qNQfCzm3UajrM8hTGE5BoC3NYQAvD_BwE

So the Uniqlo one I have lived in for the last 3 winters is very VERY similar to this one!

this means what I need to add to it is possibly a classy wool coat thingy for any evenings out. Any suggestions for brands? I will try Vinted first as will try to save pennies and also allows me to buy more than 1 in one go!

I think you need a separate coat for #5 everything else is just a warm parka. I have a Didrikson. Which is warm, long, cosy and mud resistant. Going out for dinner type stuff I have a cashmere wrap which is surprisingly cosy given it isn’t weighty. Also they come in one size fits all which is handy for Vinted.

Years ago I had this coat.

It was from River Island, a long black military one but wasn't quite wool so easily cleaned, kept me warm and was also very slimming.

I've found nothing that matches up to it since and I really wish I still had it.

This. Try Vinted or charity shops for good quality second hand wool coats. Unfortunately it's the wrong time of year to get any discounted new ones. I swear by Hobbs Tilda.

I got mine from Tk Maxx, a Nicole Fahri wrap “coatigan” one for £40 and another make I hadn’t heard of. New Look sale for Teddy fleece for school runs when it’s not too cold.
