Growing out highlights - dyeing roots

Hi! I have had blonde highlights for years but I have four kids now, a pretty busy job 3.5 days a week - I will have to travel to London twice a week from September at an additional cost of £400 a month (plus £400 a month childcare for the littlest that I haven’t had to pay yet) and there’s a cost of living crisis on. So the blonde highlights are too costly and time-consuming.

However, I also have dark mousey roots shot through with grey (am 41 - the grey isn’t everywhere but it isn’t pretty!) Am thinking of going for a light caramel brown. Can’t dye over the highlights but would like to get the hairdresser to chop my hair to the chin, then dye the roots in the light brown and let the blonde grow out. I guess balayage style …

is this possible? Then I’d be in a position just to get root touch ups which are quicker and cheaper than foils …

not sure but following as mine sounds like yours and I’ve been wondering the same…

Hi, I had the same and love it. My hairdresser took some of the root colour down into the highlighted bit and it looks fab.

Oh thanks Optimistic! Fingers crossed. And good luck Ferret :)

If your natural colour is mousy/dirty fair like mines then I would avoid light brown - in my experience it washes gingerish - I would have your roots done in dark ash blonde rather than light brown as it will blend lovely into your blonde and your hair will remain on the cooler side instead of a warm brown, then your roots growing in will be the same tone as the balayge roots

Good tip - but can I do that without highlights? I just want an all-over dye …

Yes just let the blonde grow out with the dark ash blonde at the roots, that's what balayage is anyway, like a lovely ombre ash blonde fading into blonde
