What to wear to an October wedding?

BIL's. According to DH dress code is anything you want although he will probably wear his smart trousers and a shirt.
Helpful.

No idea what SIL-to-be wants the dress code to be. FIL says he will wear jeans and T-shirt (pretty sure MIL will not allow this and he will also wear a suit/shirt.)

I'm not good at stylish or elegant, more clunky and chunky. Size 10 tops, size 14 trousers, boat sized feet. Don't have any going out clothes beyond black jeans and a smart T-shirt but feel that's not enough for a wedding?

I would go for comfort and something you might conceivably wear again. My go to is a jersey dress that can be dressed up or down and worn with boots or flats - eg this dress from Roman. I'm sure someone will say it's too casual for a wedding but I disagree as you can easily dress it up. Plus it has pockets. Bonus!

Please call your SIL to be! It sounds as if your husband’s family really couldn’t give a toss, which is a bit dispiriting.

Once you know the degree of formality, how much would you want to spend? And where do you usually shop for clothes?

BHRK · 31/08/2023 13:25

You need a dress of course. I think those
members of family sound really rude. Most people dress up for such an occasion - and you all should. What’s your budget?

ilovemydogmore · 31/08/2023 13:27

Definitely reach out separately to SIL!

How about a lovely belted jumpsuit?

clowniform · 31/08/2023 13:43

Sounds like everyone's wearing WTF they want so good excuse to buy something you really like and will wear lots, and go in that 😀

Defiantlynot41 · 31/08/2023 13:44

Finery have some nice dresses - there are some with bolder prints if you want something more dramatic, but all of these could be styled more casually or dressed up with heels

Oh, I will call her, but I'd rather do it in a "I was thinking of wearing this..." way. I know it's been the one source of disagreement between them. DH told me BIL doesn't see the need to dress up as it's the day that's important, not what they wear. After a speechless spluttering I made him call BIL and read him the riot act. BIL will probably now wear a suit.

I usually wear jeans and a T-shirt. Can't remember where I bought the jeans, online to replace a previous pair I think. T-shirts, have some sports ones and plain ones from Next. Beyond that I don't "go" shopping.

Budget is around 100-150 for everything.

Do you have suitable shoes / bag / jewellery? If not, would you be able to borrow from family or friends? (Doesn’t seem worth buying them if you’re not going to wear them again.)

However (I’m going to be blunt) do you truly never go anywhere that prompts smarter clothes than black jeans and a t shirt? (Completely understand if £££ an issue.) Possibly you live a fabulous life on thousands of acres and feel no craving for wider society. But most people do like to dress up a bit, occasionally …

Defiantlynot41 · 31/08/2023 15:49

Ok, 3 more, all from John Lewis and slightly more to the casual side of things so would not look out of place in your usual everyday wear afterwards

Honestly, no. We neither have the funds to go out nor anyone to babysit. If we're on holiday or out for a meal with family we're at child friendly places. And sadly no thousands of acres to have a fabulous life in, just a poky flat.

I'm also looking for an October wedding outfit - quite a lot of nice dresses on the next website in various brands. I'm liking some of the Love and Roses ones (non floral) but watching this as I need a good outfit!!

Assuming you didn't run away to Gretna Green what did guests at your own wedding wear?

Or any guests in any wedding in any film or television programme? Or even the Royal weddings?

The dress code of "What to wear at weddings" has been more or less fixed all my lifetime.

Wildermess · 31/08/2023 17:59

To be fair the poor (in terms of family wardrobe alacrity) OP has already tried her best with the men of her husband’s family!

@RejectedAgainandAgain quite honestly I’d think about something you’d like to have in your wardrobe, and if it’s even remotely suitable, use your wedding budget to buy it. Obviously wear it to the wedding, but then at least you’ll have something ready for the next occasion.

NB - the baby-sitting years pass in a flash. You’ll soon be wondering what to wear to your child’s graduation, or similar.

A couple of wrap dresses from Sosander. This one is lovely, too much for you? It’s velvet and they do it in blue as well.

Just as a point, if you do like any wrap dresses or shirt dresses, go for ones with more of an a-line or flared skirt rather than bodycon for your shape… unless there’s Lycra.

A wrap dress also needs to be a true wrap dress, not just a cross over bodice sewn onto a skirt. This type is best for large boobs and with the difference in size between your top and bottom halves, will swamp you at the top.

If you buy something you like, it can be worn for when your dcs are older and you go out to nicer places to eat etc, it really won’t be long.

OP i got married in october.

We had a 'morning dress' code, there were lots of jewel colours and deep crimson.

Bridesmaids wore gold, I had a gold sash on an ivory dress and we had red/rusty pink hydrangeas for the flower arrangements.

So maybe go for something jewel coloured. Or rent a dress if you know you won't wear it again.

Or have a look on hinted.

‘Hinted’ sounds like the ultimate decorously discreet dating app.Grin

Wildermess · 31/08/2023 18:43

This is gorgeous, and versatile. Very good value. (Not the same as cheap!)

Alternatively - buy this. It’s a bargain. It’s pure silk so definitely celebratory. It could be paired with some plain silky trousers from Vinted, or whatever. And afterwards you could wear it over black jeans … (If you buy the size 14/ XL the top may need a tiny bit of alteration. Shouldn’t cost much at all.)

Wildermess · 31/08/2023 19:31

Another gorgeous, really versatile bargain. You could wear this over a t shirt or a thin sweater in most weathers. Add a jumper over it, plus boots for the coldest days/nights.

Borrow a warm jacket for the wedding. (Again small alteration needed to make the bodice fit properly.)

Mummyoflittledragon · 31/08/2023 19:47

If you just want to buy something and not necessarily wear it again, you could have a look at the Jolie Moi sale. There’s dresses on there from £29. But we have no idea of what you like, skirt length or your skin tone. Here’s a few examples of dresses, which will suit an apple body shape plus a jumpsuit, which also comes in more muted colours. I think all of the ones I chose have elastase in them btw.

Are these at all appropriate? We have no idea of your age or if you want above the knee. Am just going relatively conservative.

How big are your feet? Long tall sally does up to a 13 in certain styles. Do you want a heel or ballet flats? If you aren’t used to heels, I would say something like this or a kitten heel. https://www.longtallsally.com/lts-black-two-part-block-heel-court-shoes-in-standard-d-fit-p

At the minimum I would go for a smart jersey dress. I managed to get one from vinted in pretty good condition- try there.

Zebracat · 31/08/2023 20:13

Sounds like money is really tight. I would look at Next clearance. There’s a pretty long sleeve yellow dress for £9.50, or a lovely top for 13.50, which you could wear with trousers. Lots of jackets under £30.00 . Buy things that you will wear again it’s really nice that you are doing all you can to make the day special.

Good point Zebracat. I also meant to mention Next sale. I bought a lovely jacket for a wedding for about £20. If you do go for something op, just check the stock availability. If it says it’s coming in say 6 weeks, that doesn’t guarantee you’ll ever get the item. Best to stick to something in stock, which will arrive tomorrow / x number of days.
