Hairdressers keep wanting me to be blonde

Every time I go to the hairdressers (different salons) they manage to talk me into doing balayage or highlights, saying brown hair will "wash me out". It doesn't though. I'm really pale with blue eyes and I actually find darker hair looks better on me, confirmed by many impartial observers.

First question: what is going on here?! Anyone had the same? I beginning to wonder whether it's because it's more profitable for them to do blondes?!

Second question: I've now got a balayage (been about 2 months since I got it done). Can I go and get them to do a full head brunette colour over it or will the balayage underneath create a weird effect?

Emma stone looks awful as a brunette

Don’t be silly.

I don't think there are many hairdressers who are trained or know anything about colour analysis. I think there is simply a general fashion/cultural preference for blonde.

It's puzzling when people say that their own hair colour makes them look pale/dead/ghostly etc. Nature doesn't tend to get colours wrong, and a colour that is close to natural (lighter or darker within a few shades) will almost always suit someone best.

It sounds like you know what suits you, OP!

I have tried to return to my natural colour many times over the years but without fail I look truly awful and people start asking if I’m unwell. I think it’s because I have one parents skin colour and the others hair colour and they just do not go together at all. When I was a child it wasn’t too bad but as an adult my skin got ruddier and I just look unhealthy. With my hair much lighter I look much healthier 🤷🏼‍♀️

Maybe the OP can't go as dark as her original colour, but there are lots of lovely shades of light and medium brown.

Me! I've had the same. My colouring is like Monica from Friends. Celtic. The hairdressers can't stand it.

They told me last time (Toni and Guy) that my natural auburn highlights from the sun was "hideous" and "ugly"

I have noticed more and more people ditching blonde and going back to auburn or brunette though. But it annoys me that people seem to think that blonde is superior.

I tried blonde once. The dark black roots came in after a few days. Why would I want that?

I've tried 4 salons in my local city and they've all commented on it.

I don't think blondes are superior I just need highlights to cover my greys! But I'm a mousey colour so a bit meh anyway

I also think my hair must be really porous or something because twice two different hairdressers tried to give me a subtle balayage and it ended up really intense and almost yellow (these were high end hairdressers too)

I always think going blonde forces you to maintain it. I go to the hairdresser once a year. Trim the ends off myself everyone once in a while. I had blonde highlights pre children and that was £££s and an hour and a half every six weeks.

Mushroo · 28/08/2023 11:28

@BigOldBlue1 it sounds like we have the same colouring.

I occasionally get balayage but always regret it and can’t wait to get back to my natural dark brunette. When it’s growing out I’ve had an all over semi permanent colour and that seems to fade quite nicely over the balayage so you could try that.

I’m naturally dark, pale skin, blue-grey-green eyes. I look much better dark, and now don’t dye my hair at all. My eyes pop a lot more when my hair is dark and I get more compliments from friends/family.
I had a bad experience with highlights - it looked awful on me and my hair felt crap. Never again. I do think some hairdressers can default to blonde as it’s so popular. My current hairdresser just does cuts - others at the salon do the colours - and he always compliments my naturally shiny/healthy dark hair.

They told me last time (Toni and Guy) that my natural auburn highlights from the sun was "hideous" and "ugly"

😮This is incredibly rude. Hairdressers trying to suggest different cuts from the one you've already told them you want is already annoying, but this comment is really beyond the pale.

Going blonde is expensive- regular colour, more frequent cuts, plus product and treatments. Staying your natural colour in comparison doesn’t make your hairdresser a bean.

Did you say T&G or was that a reply? They’re notorious for this sort of thing.

I'm naturally very dark brown, quite pale skin, blue eyes.

Also greying.

I went blonde about 10 years ago (I'm 54) and although it definitely needs more TLC, for me it's worth it.
It hides the greys and (I think) makes me look younger.

I use Olaplex and Kerastase products to look after it so, along with the actual salon colouring, it's definitely more expensive.

The one thing I miss about my darker days is the shine, much harder to produce with blonde locks.

Emma Stone would look stunning bald 😀
