Waterproof school shoes

Another autumn, another stressy inability to find waterproof school shoes for my daughter.

She cycles to school and otherwise, you know, walks about, so I'm again struggling with the total lack of waterproof kids shoes. Previously we've gone with Startrite Rhinos which worked waterproof wise but DD is at the age where she'd really rather not have velcro closed clompers. Clarks yesterday - no waterproof kids shoes at all! DD tried some brogue type shoes which she liked the look of but (a) not waterproof and (b) the unforgiving back looked like it would shred her heels in seconds :(. Size 6.5.

School rules are black leather or imitation leather, no trainers. But I'm at the point of wondering if I just need to suck it up and buy her Geoxx https://gb.ecco.com/en-GB/product/5642647614/ECCO-SOFT-7-W I've got the boot version for work, they're ok (not clompy enough for me!) but it's still £150 and a bit trainery!!

Also looked at Kickers, DMs. Nothing waterproof.

Any recommendations for non clompy ideally non trainery waterproof schools v gratefully received. Gargh.

@PenguinFlipper easy enough once you're used to them. The ones I have to up by Velcro up the back.

Can you just use some nikwax shoe and leather protector? Use this one walking boots and it's brilliant.

DD had Geox last year and they were fantastic so we have gone back to them again this year. She has these lace-ups:

@YellowDots 14 year old don't generally wear Mary Jane's now either. 🤷🏻‍♀️ in my school they have to wear lace up shoes but in previous schools most wear ballet style or loafers.

I'm a teacher btw I don't still go to school!

I had to buy my dd boys shoes because all the girls ones were flimsy half covering the foot. I wish they didn't separate them into boy/girl as she was not happy that they were from the boys section. Or made full covered girls shoes.

Thanks @Alphabeta123 , very much agree. It irks me that most girl's school shoes are Mary Jane types with massive bloody holes in the top! How does that help you run around a soggy playground?

My DD has been saying exactly this since she was about 6! It spurred her on to learn to tie her laces 😁

I think it depends on the area the school is. In my school, it's all about the thick soled Mary Jane.

Dd's school is all about the loafer. Ds doesn't care,as long as i don't make him go to a shop.
20 miles different, but different countries and as dd would put it, a different aesthetic 😁 I think loafers are asking for damaged ankles and soggy feet, but what do I know? I still think dd should be wearing dms. In fact, I think they should all be allowed to wear boots.

imnotthatkindofmum · 29/08/2023 16:28

@TheMoth my kids would love to wear their boots! Last snow day they were allowed, they were delighted. Easily pleased!

PenguinFlipper · 29/08/2023 19:49

@TheMoth boggling at the brave kids wearing loafers in all weathers! I used to work at a uni and always marvelled at the fact that approx 95% of the student made no concessions to rain at all, apparently happy to sport converse and sliders in pouring rain.

Letting kids wear boots would be great...

I buy black waterproof trainers from decathlon or mountain warehouse. But my kids are younger and your daughter may not like them.

PenguinFlipper · 29/08/2023 23:24

@Cinnamonandcoal that would be great, but DD school say no trainers :(. DD lives in trainers outside school but she thinks she needs a brogue type lace up for school, she sees the velcro leather type shoe as too young for her. I guess peer pressure is big part of that. She also used to get grief off the boys at primary for wearing "boys" shoes, basically waterproof leather trainers, gragh. Depressing how rigid some kids (and shoe shops) are about sex stereotypes.

We'll see how the geox pans out, at least they look more padded than Clarks ones, I think the narrow collar would have shredded her heels!

Proper polish yes waterproofs shoes.

sillyuniforms · 29/08/2023 23:48

Ten min every Sun night to polish shoes properly and they'll resist water & last longer
