Winter Morning Registry Office Wedding-Help!

I have a city break booked for my birthday this Winter and after over 20 years, we've decided to tie the knot that weekend too. It's going to be a tiny wedding at 10am with just two witnesses present.
We plan on going back to our Airbnb afterwards to get changed and then head out sightseeing. So it won't be an all-day event.
I'm really stuck on what to wear and I'd love some help please. I don't have any 'style'..I'm more of a t-shirt and yoga pants type of person.. I love charity shops and I never, ever wear a dress!
I've watched some videos of the venue, and the brides are gorgeous and dressed in full-on gowns. Please help me pick something that will make me feel pretty but in a very subdued way. Thank you!

Would you be more comfortable in e.g. a trouser suit or jumpsuit than a dress/skirt? Do you want something re-wearable? Would you like to wear white, or not? And, critically: budget?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/08/2023 08:48

Budget? Shape and colour preferences? Personally I’d want something I could wear all day, changing into trainers for sightseeing. I’d want my dress to be taken out for a very nice lunch!

Pitstop1986 · 27/08/2023 08:50

If you are uncomfortable in a dress, I'd opt for a trouser suit/ smart trousers and top combo.

I wore a dress that I bought at ted baker for my wedding. Not the traditional wedding dress at all, but I felt like I'd made a bit of an effort and it was comfortable and pretty.

Saying this, it's your wedding, you make the rules! If you want to wear casual clothing, there's absolutely nothing stopping you! It's your day after all- do it your way!

bryceQ · 27/08/2023 08:51

I did this, I wore a green bardot style dress with long sleeves, fitted. I felt lovely and my husband wore a suit and our little boy too. I looked on selfridges, I think my dress was £160 ish. Why not just order a few to try

AzraelsCat · 27/08/2023 08:57

Thanks so much for the replies. I'd have a budget up to around £200. I won't be wearing it again and I would rather get changed afterwards. I think a trouser suit would be too formal for me. A jumpsuit suits great!

Oh, and definitely not white!

Congratulations!

I wonder if you might not be better to hire something, if you’re certain you won’t want to wear it again?

That way you could wear something more … singular than shopping might allow.

My dress was like this for a November wedding

Why never wear it again? I think the whole idea of spending pots of money on a white wedding dress is mad anyway but I get making a big splash if your going for that type of wedding.

I don't understand at all why if you're going for a low key registry office you'd spend £200 on something you'll never wear again. It's an opportunity to get something new and special and 100% non bridal which you can wear again- even if not for the rest of the day but on other occasions.

Agreed. Or something that can be worn on other occasions if OP is determined to change out of it.

It’s a perfectly legitimate question, @Lucyboat - which countless people reading but not posting might also be asking.

Obviously the OP isn’t obliged to answer!

If you are going to feel more comfortable in a casual style then how about something like this? You can dress the trousers up or down. It's your wedding day and you should wear what you like and are comfortable in.

Nancy Mac do stunning jumpsuits and they are having their sale so slightly over your budget but maybe do-able? Many gorgeous colours and prints. The velvets would be lovely for a winter vibe. www.nancymac.co.uk/collections/jumpsuits-1

As soon as the OP said she liked the idea of a jumpsuit I thought Nancy Mac! I definitely aspire to having one of these one day.

RandomersAssociation · 27/08/2023 09:58

@Lucyboat the OP has said she does not want anything white and might prefer a jumpsuit!

cathyandclare · 27/08/2023 10:06

Some lovely Me and Em ones, especially good if you're tall. I like the red one and the green halter.

ithinkicanithinkican · 27/08/2023 10:06

@Lemonyfuckit Me too - looking at them for the OP and seeing the sale inspired me to finally order one for myself!! Just got paid so decided to go for it - hope it suits.

AzraelsCat · 27/08/2023 10:13

Thanks so much for the ideas. That's exactly my 'style', @ThiThingammyBob and I had never heard of NannyMac, @iithinkicanithinkican so I'll go off and have a good look. I'm sorry if I'm coming across as clueless (it's because I really am). £200 would be my max budget and even though I won't probably wear it again, it will be worth it to feel good on the day and not stress about it on the lead up to the day. Again, thank you because I wouldn't even know where to start looking.

There's lots of inspiration on this thread
Show me your non traditional wedding dress! http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/styleandd_beauty/4861516-show-me-your-non-traditional-wedding-dress

The one that sprung to mind was the beautiful sweater and satin skirt - sorry I can't remember the poster but there's a picture on that thread
