Eternity Rings

TLDR: fair pricing for an eternity ring?

My husband has kindly offered to buy an eternity ring as a gift for me following the birth of our (last) baby in the next few months.

We went today to the jewellers that made my wedding and engagement rings - due to their design it would need to be a bespoke ring in order to fit.

We were quoted 2k for 0.5 carat half band in platinum but got them down to £1600. Looking online a similar carat band would be less than £1000 but I’m aware there’s a cost for craftsmanship/bespoke designs.

I have very little experience in buying jewellery and don’t want to be ripped off! Thanks in advance for any advice.

Thanks - this is helpful as I had been looking at them but didn’t realise they did bespoke!

I paid 2k for my 0.8 carat eternity band but I had it made bespoke by a jeweller I know

The difference in price is the labour involved. It's like the difference between buying a pair of shoes from the high street, or having a pair made especially for you.
On top of that, handmade bespoke jewellery is often a little heavier due the way it is made (so more gold or platinum) and the quality of the diamonds may be better.

Ok - that all sounds reasonable! Happy to pay for labour and craftsmanship, but also hadn’t had any opportunity to ‘shop around’ just for the very nature of the thing. Thank you!

to be fair, it’s a good investment I’ll wear every day so still very lucky and excited!

$10K Canadian, so £6-7K GBP, for my half eternity band with 5x.33 carat diamonds.
14k yellow gold with platinum shanks holding the diamonds.
same jeweler same style as my wedding band of 42yrs…except for the upgrade from barely visible diamond chips.

I have a 0.5 half enternity band

Its this one - i bought it in sale for £500 just under 3 years ago.

I have a funny shaped engagement ring and just wanted a cheap weddong band so got this. I think they look nice despite not being flush.

There's a gigantic price difference between diamonds of varying colour, clarity & (lack of) inclusions. Somebody probably has actually drawn the price/perfection graph; the curve would be exponential.

Some jewellers will not work with stones beneath a certain quality. I remember my engagement ring (the fiancé was a cheapskate) had to have a 0.25 carat diamond, while my shop-front research had suggested I'd get something over 0.5 carat.

You could ask the jeweller? Are they 0.5 carat of perfection, and is there room for a couple of inclusions and a slight tint?

GarlicGrace · 23/08/2023 05:56

💎 that was supposed to say colour, clarity & cut.

You could buy one which isn't bespoke and wear on a different finger?
