Is there any hope for these toenails in 3 weeks? (Gross photo)

Think I know what the answer will be 😩. I’m going to be a bridesmaid in 3 weeks and I’m having such trouble with shoes (I have narrow feet and bandy ankles so struggle anyway). I’m just looking for white toe-covered kitten heels (don’t seem to exist) or flats because I get a lot of questions and embarrassment about my toes. I got a toe blister just from walking down my hallway in new shoes! So now I’m feeling like open toe will give more options and be less painful for 12 hours. But just look at them!

The second toes are too long and they’re bent from wearing cheap shoes as a teenager so need surgery to correct. I lost my big toenails as a teenager and they’ve never properly grown back. I’ve been using anti fungals for 12 months with no improvement. They are so thick so even when I paint them they look terrible (not to mention they’re only half as short as they should be!)

Do press on nails work on toes? Would they stay on my horrible thick toenails? Will they take the nail off if someone steps on my toe?? I assume no pedicure place would take me because of the fungus.

On the one hand I think people will be too busy looking at the bride to look at my feet. On the other hand they really do look strange and I don’t want them to draw attention, especially in the actual wedding photos.

So has anyone seen any nice white closed-toe shoes with a small 1 inch heel? Or can offer any advice on making them look more normal?

The links to shoes are good.
You must see a podiatrist, because this looks really really bad, big toe toenails not actually growing? and thus needs sorting.

calmcoco · 20/08/2023 12:01

Plenty of white shoes in John Lewis, you can filter by colour

Genevieve29 · 20/08/2023 12:11

Definitely not false nails from Primark, they'll pop off. If you want to go for camouflaging your nails, at least invest in getting them done professionally as a one-off for the occasion, or look for shoes with toes as PPs have posted.

Your dad was right OP if you apply Vicks regularly to your toenails it will over six months or so fix that. The camphor is the stuff and prolonged use allows it to penetrate to the nail bed and kill the fungus. Takes a while to grow out but it does work I promise you. I fixed my fungal toenails with consistent twice daily Vicks.

stardust777 · 20/08/2023 16:26

OP, if you're struggling to get a GP app/referral, it might be worth getting advice from one of your local pharmacists (after showing the photo that you've posted here).

AdoraBell · 20/08/2023 16:28

The Vicks thing is interesting, I’ve been using an over the counter treatment for fungus.

OP if you can’t get a GP appointment could you afford a private consultation with chiropodist or podiatrist?

For the wedding I would say closed shoes.

rainyskylight · 20/08/2023 16:30

The external fungal treatment won’t work as it’s not strong enough. You need to see a GP and get the tablets.

saffronsoup · 20/08/2023 16:34

Are you taking oral medications for the fungus or using topical anti fungus medications?

dogrilla · 20/08/2023 16:35

Boots or Superdrug stick-on toenails are brilliant. I have terrible big toe nails so use fake ones for them and paint them. As already been said, use loads of glue. They last a week for me if I've used enough. Take the glue with you just in case

Magien · 20/08/2023 17:14

Your nails are way too far gone for the topical remedies to work - they say on all the instructions you should only have one toe affected and not down to the nail bed. Closed toe shoes and see a doctor to treat the fungus as soon as you can.

Thank you for the shoe recommendations! These are really helpful

I haven’t seen my GP about the toenails and haven’t had any specific blood tests done. Appointments are like gold dust here and it just never seemed like an urgent problem. But I will go because it’s affecting my shoe choices and I’ve tried a couple of otc treatments now

Your gp can prescribe you anti fungal tablets which should be more effective than topical treatments. You do have to take them for a long time though and may need to monitor liver function to make sure they're not causing any side effects.

Purpleavocado · 21/08/2023 10:05

I had an awful big toenail - it did get better but took about 9 months to grow out. I used antifungel nail paint stuff and a nail buffer thing and hid it with nailvarnish if I was wearing sandals.

Purpleavocado · 21/08/2023 10:06

it was my whole nail affected down to the bed and the topical stuff did fix it - but it wouldn't hurt for you to see your GP

BeansOnToast32 · 21/08/2023 12:15

OP go and see a podiatrist! I've just been today and wish I went ages ago. Both of my big toes were terribly fungal, yellow like yours and thickened and I'd tried all the oils and stuff ages ago and they made no difference.

Well today I went to see a podiatrist and she's sorted me right out, she thinned the nail and cut them right down (one is little stump) but now they are near enough normal colour and ready for me to start applying treatment. I was there just over 30mins and it cost £55. Best money I've spent.

The podiatrist said she's got rid of probably 99% of the fungus and now the nail is prepped for the Curanail (treatment needs the ingredient Amorolfine at 5%) and if I keep up with it I'll have a healthy toenail in 12-18 months. I don't think applying anything to your nails as they are will work properly, they need to be thinned down, trimmed and have all the fungus fished out from beneath the nail (grim 🤢) for the treatment to penetrate effectively.

Thank you all soo much for your shoe suggestions! I’ve found some that are padded inside and much more comfy than the cheap previous options I was looking at that gave me a blister from trying them on 😅

Thank you also for suggesting a podiatrist, there’s a local one so I will go there first and see what they say

I just have one more question – the shoes I’m looking at all have very smooth soles. They’re bridal shoes so I guess it’s for dancing? However they’re very slippery on wood floors 😬. Google says I should scuff them with sandpaper, is that the best thing to do?

I use nail wraps when my toe nails are manky. It won't stand up to close scrutiny, but the improvement is vast and they look pretty from a distance.

Toffeesgirl · 24/08/2023 13:22

What size are you? I've got my wedding shoes which you're welcome to have (would only want the postage costs).
I'll try and find a photo of them

Toffeesgirl · 24/08/2023 13:25

They look like these (but not these ones)

I had a similar issue with my toenails. You will need the terbafine tablets, Your GP can prescribe them. I am not sure if your other nails are normal or thickened too. If its too far gone you will need surgery. A podiatrist isn't qualified to determine if you need this, you will need a referral from your GP for an orthopedic surgeon. Preferably one that has a lot of experience doing toenail avulsions. ( remove toenail)

StarDolphins · 24/08/2023 20:55

I had nails worse than this for 10 years😩

Don’t think a Dr would agree but I’ve treated it myself. Since Feb, I’ve taken fluconozole thrush tabs & finally it’s growing out.

When mine were bad, I wore closed toe shoes.
