Anyone worked out how to stop bra wire poking through the fabric of the bra?

Bought some underwired bras from M&S and already in just a week I'm occasionally feeling the edge of the wire trying to poke through the fabric and into my boob! Anyone worked out how to stop this from happening, is there any sort of material I can buy to sew over the pokey bits to stop them breaking through?

I've out a couple of stitches in mine and it worked.

modgepodge · 20/08/2023 08:32

If it’s poking you it sounds like maybe the bra doesn’t fit brilliantly?

once they’ve actually broken through, I had a contraption a few years back which was a little plastic cap which went over the end, with barbs on the outside. You pushed it back inside the casing and the barbs held it in place. I think underwires bras aren’t really supposed to be machine washed, which contributes to this happening in the first place.

AssetTag22 · 20/08/2023 08:37

Never had this and always buy from M&S.

Totoiveafeelingwerenotinkansasanymore · 20/08/2023 08:40

Hand wash, it's the machine that causes this 😊

Rocket1982 · 20/08/2023 08:40

That shouldn’t happen within a week! Take back and talk to them as they might be faulty. But they may also
fit badly. Did you wash them in the washing machine? You can get cage laundry bags which protect bras.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/08/2023 08:41

Had this loads, incl from M and S. Dh calls it the satellite reviver. Stitches work for a bit.

Trouble is, l just cannot cba to hand wash bras.

Floofydawg · 20/08/2023 08:43

Buy non wired bras.

justasking111 · 20/08/2023 08:45

My cancer consultant says she advises against underwire bras except for special occasions they're bad for breast drainage. Buy a mesh bag for the washing machine

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 20/08/2023 08:45

@modgepodge I don't suppose you remember where you got your contraption from and/or what it was called? I've had 3 M&S bras recently with escapee underwires. (I know it's probably because I machine wash them, but I'm sure they never used to come apart so quickly, and if I have to hand wash them they'll lie at the bottom of the washing basket more often than they're worn - I get round to doing handwashing once in a blue moon.)

AnnaMagnani · 20/08/2023 08:53

Handwash
Wear the right size

If fitted in M&S v unlikely to be the right size

I find this when my bras start getting old. I blob a bit of glue on the bare end of the wire if the paint has come off, sew a few stitches to seal up the hole and sew some thick fabric over the area. Seems to work!

Floofydawg · 20/08/2023 08:43

Buy non wired bras.

That's exactly what I have done for several years now, and this is exactly the reason.

Papernotplastic · 20/08/2023 15:30

That happens to me when I’ve bought the wrong bra size.

Floofydawg · 20/08/2023 15:46

@Topseyt123 they're also way comfier. Bloody hate the wires digging in.

LlamasSitOnPyjamas · 20/08/2023 16:05

I have tried many non-wired bead and they simply do not give enough support for large boobs and are therefore uncomfortable, just in a different way.

StarlightLady · 20/08/2023 16:43

Sound like “The Great Escape”! 😂 I’ve only ever had this problem once. I would be tempted either to take them back or email a complaint.

l find life too short to handwash bras, but l do put them on a delicates 30c cycle in a “delicates bag” and don’t spin. I take them out when the wash has finished and put the rest of the load on a regular spin afterwards.

Notellinganyone · 20/08/2023 16:48

Buy decent bras and it won’t t happen. I only buy Prima Donna now. Expensive but last and wash well and the wire thing never happens.

YorkieTheRabbit · 20/08/2023 17:03

I’ve not had this problem since I bought a lingerie bag.

LesserSpottedLoungeLizard · 20/08/2023 17:48

@StarlightLady it's been a major under-cover military operation getting these boobs in a decent bra since covid and having my 2yo...I never have time for a proper fitting but have had fittings in the past and know enough about how to look for the ideal fit...used to be a 38C... largest one I own is an E and the ones I bought the other week were an F Blush

It still sounds like a bad fit maybe the style doesn't suit you is it digging under the arm or between boobs? Babies do seem to start them growing

LesserSpottedLoungeLizard · 20/08/2023 18:30

@jannier in between the cleavage but only when in certain positions and not all the time...I could well be a G... but I've already got a tiny gape between the top of book and the strap over the shoulder...and E makes my boob fold upwards on itself... it's a normal tshirt full cup bra... it's my fault as I went braless during some of covid at home unless i went out the door and was braless most of my mat leave, because of irritating uncomfortable bras, unless again I left the house. So they got stretched from the top and resemble vases for flowers slightly 😂😂😂

LesserSpottedLoungeLizard · 20/08/2023 18:31

Top of boob... my boobs can't read

I used to always buy underwired bras from m&S and had no problem for decades. Last three bras i bought all did this. I've given up and bought wireless bras. Not such great support but so much more comfortable.

You can get cage laundry bags which protect bras.

More importantly, protect the machine. (At least I hope they do.) My bras are expensive but my washer is expensiver.
