Where do you look for fashion ideas and inspo?

Having had a difficult few years, I've taken my eye off the ball and don't really know where to start. I'm 45, slim and on a low/moderate budget. I only need casual clothes; jeans, boots, tops. Can anyone suggest where to look for inspiration and ideas? Either online shopping or Pinterest type sites? I'm still a bit stuck in the skinny jeans era, and hate feeling so dated.

Whowhatwear.co.uk is quite good also fashion blog wearsmymoney. I often use them for ideas. Sorry I can't make the links live for some reason.

SkunkButtRug · 13/08/2023 09:37

Oh and I don't tend to buy exactly their stuff but use them purely as visuals to source my own versions from Vinted. Smile

dramoy · 13/08/2023 10:00

i've gone back to magazines.

SushiSuave · 13/08/2023 10:08

Following this - I'm in the same predicament OP. I have 0 style and all of my clothes are old and tatty. Need a revamp but no idea where to start and don't have £000s to spend!

cmquestionnammechannge · 13/08/2023 14:10

Thanks, I'll check those websites out. I've never been a huge fashion follower but I've never felt dated either, like I do now.

Stitchfix. Absolute stress free kickstart for my wardrobe.
I’ve done it three times and now taking a month off. A few things have gone back but overall it’s been spot on. Off the top of my head I’ve had a dress, 3 smart tops and a T-shirt I’d never have chosen which looks fantastic, two pair of trousers, shoes and a jumper. Can’t recommend highly enough.

Niftythrifter · 13/08/2023 14:42

I tend to use Pinterest by searching for how to style specific items like wide leg jeans outfits. It’s worth looking at doing that as it gives you ideas to shop your own wardrobe.

DaphneduM · 13/08/2023 14:44

I look at Vogue Italia, Net a Porter and Luisa Via Roma. You can see a whole outfit for each item on Net a Porter and Luisa Via Roma and it gives you some good ideas.

I then source cheaper options from charity shops and Vinted. For example the Saint Laurent double breasted long wool coats for this autumn are absolutely beautiful. I found an Italian long grey/black herringbone tweed coat very similar on Vinted and lo and behold yesterday an extra long wool, cashmere, angora brown coat from Cancer Research - both coats are in great condition too - so chuffed!!!!!

I've been sorting through my wardrobe today and remembered some men's jackets sourced via Oxfam - a lovely Versace wool pinstripe, a Valentino green and navy herringbone wool and a quirky embroidered jacket.

It's my hobby - I've always loved clothes - it's very time consuming but in a good way and hugely satisfying. Now I'm retired my clothes budget has massively changed of necessity, so I've adapted. Obviously better to be buying sustainably too. I need to stop for the moment though - bulging wardrobes!!!!

The Italians are the best for clothes, I think. So stylish and inspiring. Interestingly, when studying those Saint Laurent coats - they're not made in France at all - they're made in Italy!

I'm interested as well. Somehow between lockdown and perimeno swallowing my waist I've lost my fashion mojo.

discomoves · 13/08/2023 17:23

Stitch fix is really good if you get a good stylist. I also follow people on Instagram and look at Pinterest. I find sticking to basic, plain, good quality items works best. I buy a lot from Vinted

ThelmaBorden · 13/08/2023 17:56

OP, do you look on YouTube? there are sites which show what people are wearing
in different cities, where the well dressed people are.
My favourite is Milan, so stylish
Grooming, good quality boots and bags, hair well cut, a good posture, Italian
Vittlrkas Channel or Milan on Trend
London is usually Kings Road or Sloane Street, funkier fashion, uninhibited. -

Another stylish city is Stockholm, tall. blondes in good coats,
‘Street Style Stockholm’

Plenty of inspiration

However on a more pragmatic level, next month is when Autumn clothes, boots
and accessories hit the stores, online, Primark.
George have sturdy leather boots online, they soon sell out as they are stylish
and a true size fit

Charity shops always have rows of denim jeans, many with tags on still,
funky bags, belts, jewellery, scarves, happy hunting !

I follow women whose style I like on Instagram. I tend to follow influencers in their 40s with young kids like mine. Sometimes the stuff is out of my price range but it’s easy to achieve with cheaper copies. I don’t use Instagram for traditional social media, I just tend to use it for fashion and home inspiration.

grayhairdontcare · 13/08/2023 18:04

Erica Davies Sunday styling
Alexander steadman for classic fashion
Back of the wardrobe for lots of inspiration
All instagram

SM4713 · 13/08/2023 18:10

TBH- I don't look anywhere for inspiration and wouldn't have a clue what is 'IN' at the moment!?! I generally find the 'in' thing is something only a waif, 20yr old would suit.

I know what flatters my shape and the colours that suit me, then I start looking. By then seeing what is available, it gives me a fair idea of the in things anyway.

Lykia · 13/08/2023 19:23

I too follow Wearsmymoney on Instagram. Claire Lopez is another one I follow - she has good style. It's quite pared down and lacking in fuss which is what I like.

cannaethink · 13/08/2023 19:29

I use TikTok for inspiration. Search Outfit of the day (OOTD) or Get ready with me (GRWM) and scroll til you find stuff you like. I find it much easier to search than Instagram.
There’s a huge variety of ages, styles and budgets.
I find it good for hair and make up tutorials too.

Cantonet · 13/08/2023 20:55

Nowhere at the moment.
I'm very uninspired.
Alexander stedman lives in really horrible baggy dresses & I'm not finding back of the wardrobe inspiring this year at all. All I can think of is what's she going to do with all these clothes?
I think because the summer has been so bad, that no one's particularly swinging it this year.

astarsheis · 13/08/2023 21:26

I follow women whose style I like on instagram.
I like a very simple non fussy clothes...cos, arket, some zara pieces (mainly summer), M&S has vastly improved, other stories, Massimo Dutti with a few designer pieces here and there
I like Emma Hill, buttons and blazers, also lydia jane tomlinson (although much younger, I like her style and she gives some good advice on how to put pieces together.
I use to follow doesmybumlook40, but I find her a bit annoying now. Not really interested in influencers that flaunt their life style.

canyon2000 · 14/08/2023 12:43

I used to like Alexandra Stedman but she looks like a bag lady these days!
