Advice for child's course hair

My 6 year old sons hair is very course.
It's so thick and dull, it's hair to do anything with it or make it look good 🙈
Any advice to help soften it out?

Who does your kid's hair take after? Can't you ask them what they use?

midnightblue12 · 13/08/2023 07:44

He doesn't take after anyone I'm afraid!

Buy shampoo with no sulphate
Use a deep conditioner once a week
Conditioner every other time
Use leave in conditioners each day

Rosemary oil is good for hair growth but also fab to improve dry, brittle hair, google it, smooth a little through after a hair wash.
Also coconut oil is good.
My hairdresser advised me to take marine collagen tablets but I'm not sure if they're suitable for children

Campervangirl · 13/08/2023 08:26

Oh I meant to say you can leave Rosemary oil in for a few hours or overnight then wash out

Good haircut? Could go pretty short at the sides, if thick, without it looking OTT. The top could look pretty good too as it sounds like there is some body and texture to it. 🙂

And make sure he gets plenty of B vitamins in his diet plus iron. Leafy greens, legumes, lentils and meat are good sources.

A friend of mine has hair like that, he calls it ‘Lego hair’ if it’s overdue a cut. He keeps it to a short back and sides and uses Hair Food by garnier to keep it soft

I have extremely coarse hair texture and my individual strands are very thick in diameter too. DH jokes I've got horse hair. Hair dressers hate me 😁.

I keep a spray bottle of water mixed with a hair conditioner and mist every morning to try and keep my hair feeling softer and manageable.

Use more conditioner than you think is sensible plus a leave in conditioner.

Binfire · 13/08/2023 10:37

Yes you need a spot of oil at night, and some leave in conditioner in the morning. I use normal silicone free conditioner as a leave in, mixed with some water to make a thin watery solution.
I would use sulfate free shampoo and silicone free conditioner, sulfates will make it coarser and drier.

midnightblue12 · 13/08/2023 12:55

Thanks all!
With the leave in conditioner, do I use this as well as conditioner?
Also how often would you use that bearing in mind he's 6? Every wash?

As well as. He's going to have this hair his whole life, sooner he learns this is normal for him, the better.

Yes I condition, comb it in the shower and wash out the conditioner and then don’t brush it again dry.
when I get out of the shower I put some leave in conditioner on and some again every morning if I’m not washing it. It will build up and look greasy if it has silicone in (which is basically plastic) so that’s why it’s best to use silicone free.
