Late 50s, size 18, last minute invitation to wedding (just the evening) - I WFH and just tend to go to friends' houses instead of out out. I've only worn jeans and T shirts and boots or sandals for ages. I stupidly agreed to go to the wedding and can't get out of it. I can't face a dress - I love them but would look awful in one. My hair's OK, make up fine, but it's just what to wear. I'd been thinking of just getting a nice top and wearing trousers but I've been told it's formal. I'll only be there from 7-10 so don't want to spend a fortune but my main worry is that nothing will look nice on. I think as long as I get a nice enough top I can get through it, but anything silky won't look good.

And yes, I'm kicking myself, so no need to kick me!

Please can anyone help?

@WeddingHelpNeededFast I know what you mean about cheap fabrics but as it's patterned it will be very forgiving.
Do have a look at the reviews for that H & M dress, they really are very good, lots of the reviews are for a L or XL too.

What about something like this from Phase Eight? It looks very flattering on the larger model and is available in your size and in the sale

It's the colour that's the problem there, though. I am happiest in black and if it was a little black dress, I think it would be different, but for a wedding I think I'm probably better off avoiding it.

Thanks so much for all your help. I'll look through all those sites in the morning and see if there's anything I think will do.

The one I just posted is navy

I think the phase eight top will be great on a size 18. It's versatile, so you will get plenty of wear from it.

Black/navy wide leg trousers, and a wrap style blouse or top in a colour that suits you. Fab chandelier earrings, good clutch and a great lippy.

Size 18 I would be charity shop shopping.
Either for the top or I would look for wedding appropiate dress because they are so common

The problem with the dress is also that I couldn't get away without wearing tights. If it was a winter wedding I wouldn't be panicking as much.

Um, then wear tights?

I think it’s completely fine to wear black to the evening do of a wedding, if that’s what you’re most comfortable in!

Probs best to stay away from Vinted/eBay if it’s last minute, just causes more stress if the item doesn’t fit/is damaged/doesn’t arrive on time.

I agree. By that time nobody will notice what anyone is wearing.

just at a wedding last week. i bought a £135 dress for £12 and a totally ott fascinator from coast, £85 for £6! both from VINTED.
they looked brill together and had so many nice comments, been feeling down about myself recently, due to weight and age and was the boost i kinda needed (shallow i know 🙈🙈)
so def have a look there, my outfit would have cos me over £200 and i got it all for £19. already had shoes and bag, i've recycled instead of buying another dress to sit in the wardrobe and i will prob pass dress down to anyone needing one. or it can be used again for like the races or something. my point is, you don't have to spend a fortune to look and feel good.
