Where can I get the warmest, cosiest coat for under £100?

I know it's August, but the recent chilly weather has got me thinking ahead!

I will need a new coat this winter and just want it to be as cosy as possible, as I spend a long time standing around in parks etc with my young DC. I'm not overly fussed on how it looks, I just want to be really warm and snug. Any brand recommendations?

Two best options I know of:

Vintage men’s clothing. When a niece of mine was starting a holiday job at the colder end of the country we went shopping at a vintage clothing market and she found the warmest, pure wool, traditionally shaped men’s overcoat. It lasted her for years afterwards and everyone admired her stylishness. I guess pre-owned clothing websites do the same job now.

Primark. One of those big puffy anorak type things. Again, the men’s version will be bigger and probably warmer. I’ve heard all sorts of women: artists, childminders, gardeners revelling in the heat they provide for virtually pennies.

Do you want it to be waterproof too OP?

I have this one, it's very warm. www.roman.co.uk/longline-quilted-coat-12018776

Mumsnet had a sponsored post on this very subject last winter, with links, but I can’t find it now. It recommended a coat from Seasalt and one from Amazon amongst others. If anyone is any good at using the advanced search function you may be able to locate it…?!

I got a coat from tog 24 and it’s really good. I think it was about £90. Did me winter in New York this year.

A Lands End maxi down coat. In the sale they are under £100 and so warm and cosy, plus they will last really well

mamaison · 10/08/2023 21:05

This is the time of year you can find them in TK Maxx. Random selection obviously.

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 10/08/2023 21:06

Do try charity shops .

My feather filled Puffa from Uniqlo is the warmest thing ever. I could sit on a freezing hill all day. They are pretty ugly and ubiquitous though.

Amethystanddiamonds · 10/08/2023 21:18

I recently got a warm, waterproof coat from Craghoppers in the sale. Was reduced from £200 to £50! They're not the prettiest but they are definitely functional for British winter weather.

I bought my Didrikson coat off eBay. BNWT, half the price of the actual online store.
it’s referred to as “duvet coat”, you can probably work out why.

MotherofGorgons · 10/08/2023 21:25

Seasalt Janelle in the sale. Widely reviled on here but fantastic for standing around parks. I don't think it is as ugly as people say it is.

llamadrama16 · 10/08/2023 22:11

I bought my down sleeping bag coat on Vinted last year for just £40. It's stylish enough but mostly just really bloody warm.

It took me a while of searching but I find sellers are usually pretty happy to answer questions!

Lughnasa · 10/08/2023 22:18

I’d also say it’s definitely worth looking on vinted for this - I’ve had some amazing bargain coats from there. Look for any makes people recommend/you like in a shop.

ItsCalledAConversation · 10/08/2023 22:18

Mountain Warehouse sale.

BorgQueen · 10/08/2023 22:25

I’ve got a 3/4 length Regatta Rimona heavy waterproof, big fur lined hood and cuffs. I bought it 2 sizes too big to fit a fleece or big jumper under it and also for the extra length. I paid about £40 for it.

olympicsrock · 10/08/2023 23:13

I have a sea salt janelle. It is sooo warm and wind proof for those days watching kids play sport on a windy pitch. Great hood , covers the back of your legs

lightweight and not bulky. I am grateful every time I wear it in those conditions .

If you really want to be warm consider a dry robe… so snug.

I too have a below knee/mid calf Uniqlo puffa coat, it is incredibly lightweight, is extremely warm, and I can stand on the playground/field for 45 mins or more and not be cold.

I machine wash mine cold and on a gentle wash, it takes 24 hours to dry, and lots of fluffing it back into shape. But I've had it since 2019, and won't be replacing it any time soon
