What do you do when hair starts greying?

Starting to wonder if I need to change my hair.
I'm nearly 30, currently have just below shoulder length hair. Blonde highlights grown out/blended with about 3 inches of my natural hair colour at the root (dark blonde-mid brown depending on who you ask/time of year).
I don't have the time/money for frequent hair salon visits so this suits me fine and I get the blonde topped up once or twice a year.

However the past week whenever I part my hair I seem to have 3 or 4 thick grey hairs visible. I assume they're dotted throughout and just visible when I part it.

I've been plucking them out but longer term is there a low maintainence way to hide them?

I can't have full colour done at salon every month and I am reluctant to move to the mono colour of home box dye.

I'm hoping someone very clever has a solution I haven't thought of!

This is good

Light golden brown semi permanent dye works pretty well. The greys go the light golden brown but as there is no real lightening effect, my brown hair just goes a richer brown.

Semipermanent dye at home. I’ve used it for years.

Neverseenbefore · 08/08/2023 16:38

And the root touch up is good. Might be hard to do on just a few strands, though.

JaninaDuszejko · 08/08/2023 16:52

Or you could just accept having the odd grey? I've got dark blond hair and I stared getting the odd grey hair in my 30s, my hairdresser asked if I wanted highlights to hide them in my 40s and I said no and now in my 50s I've still only got a few grey hairs among 'my normal' hair colour. They are noticeable but at my age I look younger with the odd grey hair than I would with obviously fake dyed hair.

If you start dying now you're signing up for decades of it. You're only young and your current highlights will cover them for a good while.

Plantur39 Brown shampoo and conditioner will tone the greys dark blonde/brown and not change the rest of your brown too much.

Washes out in a wash or two if you don't want to continue.

Looks natural because it's just toning your natural grey pattern to look like highlights.

I have very dark hair so have lightened bits through babalyage to hide...then I use the loreal sprays in between (i do balayage twice a year)...or to help if I'm doing my hair in a certain style and have a rogue group of greys visible!

I plucked out the odd grey for years - I was mid to late 40s before it became more prominent . Hard to say without seeing your hair but think it’s unlikely you really need to do anything yet ( if ever - I don’t dye )

Hang on a couple of months and start a hat collection..

Hide away forever knowing you shall nevermore be attractive to anyone, sparing everyone your awful ugliness going forth.

Live with it, dye it, shave it off. What else can you do with it?

AnnaMagnani · 08/08/2023 17:19

I panicked and started box dyeing.

And then after a year I just couldn't be arsed anymore and left it.

Now I get asked if I have highlights as so many people assume all female hair over a certain age is dyed.

Sunshineandrainbow · 08/08/2023 17:19

I would pull them out for now.
I have been pulling out for 8 years and only now starting to get more noticeable

Prelapsarianhag · 08/08/2023 17:42

Josh Wood covers grey and looks pretty natural. I use blonde + icey, not cheap but the best home dye I have found.

lionsleepstonight · 08/08/2023 17:45

You need to decide if you want to start maintaining and dying them, or allow them to naturally appear and blend in, eventually allowing them to come through.

The worst choice is to cover for years until they are 50% or more and then try to let them grow through. This is my position and I wish I'd gone au naturel at the time.

BatheInTheLight · 08/08/2023 17:47

Embrace it

Sussurations · 08/08/2023 17:51

Let it go completely natural, or just carry on with your current regime and ask your colourist if you need the highlights changing slightly to blend better.

It can take years for the grey to really come in and the more you deviate from your natural colour the less flattering the effect is likely to be.

Topseyt123 · 08/08/2023 17:55

I'd do nothing about it. I'm nearly 57 now and largely grey.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 08/08/2023 18:01

Dyed it silver 🤷‍♀️😂

Greengeranium · 08/08/2023 18:24

I’m in the same boat-I’ve got dark brown hair with some grey edges and can’t quite decide what to do about it. I’m not well off so it can’t be expensive and as I’m already 50, I’m not sure how much I mind. Blending it in a bit might be good.

Caipirovska · 08/08/2023 18:28

John Frieda Defy Grey Brunette Blending Conditioner and also shampoo - but I'm going white more than grey so seems to pick any colour up really well.

JanglyBeads · 08/08/2023 18:38

Accept nature's course?

Ohyousillydivvy · 08/08/2023 18:53

I'm 49 and have just started having a few white hairs come through now although I'm leaving it for now. My hair is very dark so I'll wait another year to see if I should do something.

SlowlyLosing · 08/08/2023 21:48

I only have a few noticeable grey hairs and I pluck out any at my parting too.

I'm going to keep doing this for a while and see how I feel. The older I get the less I care, so hopefully it'll grow through evenly and I can just get on with it. If it grows patchy or a dodgy colour I might get highlights to blend it in.

itsnotmeitsu · 08/08/2023 22:09

Grey/silver hair can look great. When I started having silver hairs at the front I talked to my hairdresser about growing out the tint I had, as I fancied the silvery look. She said I still had a lot of my natural colour so it would be 'salt-and-pepper' (my natural hair colour was 'dirty blonde' when I was younger). I didn't want that as I think that is aging. At the moment I have a medium-blonde tint with a few highlights at the front. What I don't understand is people 'plucking out' grey hairs. Surely that's going to eventually damage the hair follicles? I bet men don't pluck out grey hairs. They'll see themselves as 'silver foxes'.

hexsnidgett · 08/08/2023 22:15

Ignore them.
