I need a dress for a funeral this week, I live this dress but can’t get it as my sister has it-and she’ll be going to the same funeral-what else would I like?
V early 50s, Size 14, 5’8”, blonde and fortunately proportionate body shape!

I prefer navy to black, but it doesn’t HAVE to be solid colour…please help…budget up to about £80

Do people dress up for funerals? That's a very low cut, high leg dress for a funeral. Its been much more respectful, covered up at funerals I have been to.

It is a nice dress but a bit more 'racy' than I've seen at funerals.

I wear this dress to work. It has buttons all the way down and up to the neck too. It can be very modest if you do the buttons up

@Heyhoherewegoagain have you looked at the other dancing leopard dresses? Lots of similar things but different enough to your sisters

@CorBlimeyGovnr thank you for taking the word out of my mouth re the dress buttoning up and down!

Because I love this one so much I’m struggling to see the wood for the trees-it’s trying to get the balance between suitable for a funeral, but not only a funeral!

@Standingongrass I’ve been to enough funerals unfortunately that I don’t need a lesson on what’s ‘respectful’, and yes, “dressing up” for the funeral of a loved elderly relative is very much what people do in my family and friends group

I assume it is your grief that has made you so touchy.

RancidOldHag · 05/08/2023 16:21

I think there's a point in life when it's worth having a good black dress (or a good black coat) because sadly there will always be funerals to go to, and unless a "brights" dress code is specified, it's the safe choice.

The trick is finding one that will be stylish (as opposed to fashionable) so you can get years of wear out of it.

How about these:

Buy Short Sleeve Maxi Summer Dress from the Next UK online shop

Stretch Cotton Midi Dress for Women | Ralph Lauren® UK

Long Sleeve Side Knot Midi Jersey Dress Black | Work Dresses | Monsoon UK.

Just Google shirt maxi dress . Dancing leopard do them or have a look at the next website

Heyhoherewegoagain · 05/08/2023 16:46

@RancidOldHag youre absolutely right. I did used to have the “funeral frock” but have lost a lot of weight the last couple of years (used to be size 28/30) so I’ve had to start from scratch with everything -absolutely NOT a complaint!!

LOVE this but it’s not available in my size 🙄-off to google for it!
I also love the RL from @RancidOldHag although it’s a bit more speedy than I wa a thinking but it’s doable…

John Lewis had something similar but I can't remember which brand it was.

This is such good advice I bought a good quality funeral dress years ago and sadly had to wear it about 7 times now. I've got a good black wool coat too which I do wear for funerals but occasionally when I go out for a meal in winter too with a bright scarf. The Ralph Lauren one is lovely. Think of it as an investment.

No, it's because you were a bit of a dick.

The Next Ralph Lauren is perfect if it's not a brights funeral. It's smart, understated and as long as you don't put weight on will do you for years. I had a Paddy Campbell black wool crepe dress in a similar shape which did the job for about 15 years until I outgrew it.

Wow. Unnecessary at best.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 05/08/2023 18:48

I think @RancidOldHag makes a good point about having a dress in your wardrobe to be there for funerals, and I would suggest to look for a funeral dress rather than a dress that you could wear to any other event afterwards. Of course it depends on whose funeral it is, but, I recall buying a dress for my dad's funeral, like you I chose a dress of a style I liked and thought I would wear for other events afterwards, but I never did as this dress will always be associated in my head with what I bought for dad's funeral . When my mum died I wore a vaguely formal dark dress I had bought for an interview and I know I'll wear that again as I hadn't bought it specifically for that funeral .

I don't know if that makes sense.

Fuchsiaplant · 05/08/2023 18:55

I brought a new black dress for work. Then had a funeral to go to. It’s now become my funeral dress. Also have a funeral coat and handbag.

Fuchsiaplant · 05/08/2023 18:56

@ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea yes, that makes sense and same thing happened to me.

I totally know where you’re coming from, most especially with a parent’s funeral.
Saying that, I recently had to buy a dress for a “bright” funeral and have made a point of wearing it a couple of times since, and I do think of my relative in a nice way when I wear it

I'd get a black shirt dress. Can't go wrong and can wear it to work if needed
