Yellow staining at the top of teeth.

I suffered with PND after the birth of my daughter 2.5 years ago. Didn’t brush my teeth for months during this time, luckily, I haven’t needed any dental treatment other than a scale and polish which was definitely more good luck than good management.

Ive been brushing my teeth every morning and night without fail for the best part of a year now but I still have awful yellow staining at the top of my teeth.

My usual dentist has closed down and I’m currently on a waiting list for one 40 miles away. Tried booking an hygienist appointment but couldn’t even get one of those locally.

I currently use a Colgate, manual toothbrush and Colgate whitening toothpaste (in a red tube) my teeth are actually lovely and white it’s just a shame about these bits at the top which are so badly stained and don’t seem to be budging. My mum mentioned it today and said I can’t be brushing my teeth properly but I’m very meticulous about it now and know that I am doing a good job of it. On the flip side, my partner who never brushes his teeth (hasn’t done for years) and drinks tea and coffee by the gallon doesn’t have stains anything like the ones I’ve got!

would an electric toothbrush be beneficial, I’ve seen some ‘smile’ stain removers but don’t know how effective they are - a lot of the reviews seem fake and it looks a bit like you could damage your gums if you’re not careful! I know ideally I’d be able to get a hygienist appointment but that isn’t an option right now so any help/advice would be appreciated!

If the yellow is only at the top by the gumline, it’s not staining, it is exposed dentine. The harder you brush it, the more enamel you are wearing away.

I think you need to see a dentist and than the hygienist - can't be independent.

Dental plans start at £15 per month as well for dentists for a check up and clean. I appreciate money is tight etc.

Get an electric toothbrush - the Amazon Fairyfloss ones are good

I'd use an electric toothbrush and smokers toothpaste it's in a tub and a bit grainy but it's great for getting stains off and pleasant peppermint taste.

See a dentist and ask about whitening. Home remedies such as abrasive toothpastes can be more damaging.

That said, I find an electric toothbrush more gentle and effective at cleaning my teeth and so choose to use one. (I also damaged my teeth by over brushing with a manual brush). I also use a water flosser which helps keep my gums healthy. I also don't drink tea and coffee or fizzy pop as I find these stain my teeth.

It sounds like you are brushing too hard and wearing away the enamel. An electric toothbrush with a pressure sensor would stop you brushing too hard.

It's probably receding gumline, plus over brushing and wearing away the enamel exposing the yellow dentine underneath.

Sadly I speak from experience 😢 BUT my wonderful dentist (before she passed) filled my front two and it was amazing! Still is.

She told me just to use a soft brush. No electric, no over brushing, just a nice soft brush to clean.

I was brushing off my own enamel. Good luck with finding a dentist, it's awful isn't it? In the meantime, brush softer. I thought I was trying to brush the yellow away, made it much worse 🙄
