Hyaluronic Acid

agapanthus1979 · 31/07/2023 22:04

I'm thinking of adding a hyaluronic product.
As with all things beauty, it's a ruddy minefield out there!
Any recommendations?
Not looking to break the bank. Is The Ordinary any good?
Thanks.

I quite like the No 7 capsules from Boots

AnneLovesGilbert · 31/07/2023 22:17

I used the ordinary one for the first time this evening! Been waiting to finish my previous serum. It’s made my already dry face feel like it’s been sucked dry, no idea why. I went on their site to see if I’d done something wrong… seems not.

I’ll cover my face in oil when I go to bed, like usual, as I feel like I’m wearing a mask. I’ll keep trying as it’s got rave reviews, which is why I bought it, and cover with thick night cream.

Robinonaspade · 31/07/2023 22:19

I found it a bit sticky. Prefer Superdrugs simply pure hydrating day serum under my moisturiser, the ordinary one, works better for me.

ASDA do a Hyaluronic Retinol Night cream … it’s very reasonable and effective!

UnicornStarfish · 31/07/2023 22:34

The Hyaluronic Acid Lotion from HadaLAbo. The white and blue bottle. Amazing stuff. Paid 5 quid last time but that was ages ago as I bought extra. It likes water so you can use a water spray and then this.
You put it on and it's amazing but it's also temporary. You can really feel it for the day like all the wrinkles are gone and everything looks nice and smooth but then it's back to your face.
I also used it when I made the mistake of using glycolic acid and retinol together. It was like putting out a fire. I was very very lucky having this.

Thank you.
Might give Superdrug a go.

I use the Inky List one. Costs £6.39 on Amazon.

RayCan · 01/08/2023 15:36

I use the Ordinary version. Trick is to apply to damp skin.

itsnotmeitsu · 01/08/2023 18:36

I think the hyaluronic part soaks up moisture, so it's a good idea to use it when your face is damp. I have a w7 serum (good price) I bought in Tesco and I spray a balancing mist from Holland and Barrett (high price😐) before that stage, and pat on the serum over that. I wait 10 minutes and then put a moisturiser or an oil over the serum. I definitely think the w7 products have benefitted my skin and I'd recommend going for a hyaloronic product, but don't spend a fortune on something unless you've trialled it and it works for you.

WhenIWasAFieldMyself · 01/08/2023 20:50

It's a cheap ingredient and these days the base of most serums and creams. So don't be tricked into buying an expensive one thinking there will be a difference.

The best not too sticky one imo is Hada Labo gold from Amazon. Lasts ages for less than £20. I also like the Vichy 89 probiotic fraction one which is less gloopy than the original Vichy 89.

maidmarianne · 01/08/2023 20:53

The revolution 2% hyaluronic is the best I've found. The ordinary and inkey ones don't do much but this feels nice and plumping. It needs an oil or moisturiser over the tip though, it's not much use on its own as there nothing to kind of seal the moisture in.

agapanthus1979 · 02/08/2023 00:13

Thanks for these suggestions.
I'm pretty low maintenance, and think I'm looking for something just to put on in the morning. I use tret at night, and don't want to overload my skin.
Does that sound ok?

Hyaluronic acid works well with Tret and retinol. You'll be fine using it like that. You can use it straight away after tret or in the morning under your sunscreen without any issues. You might need to wait a bit before putting the sunscreen on depending on what type you get.

agapanthus1979 · 02/08/2023 00:20

@UnicornStarfish Ahh, that's good to know; thank you. So I won't be affecting the efficacy of the tret if I use HA in the evening?

OP posts:
UnicornStarfish · 02/08/2023 00:33

You can use them together but the HA (if it's a lotion) should go in 20 or 30 min before Tret if your skin is sensitive or prone to peeling. Tret is supposed to go on a clean dry face and you should let HA dry by itself.
If you're using a moisturiser with HA then it should go in 30 minutes after the Tret to give the skin time for the Tret to sink in and be absorved.
If you're starting with Tret I'd do the HA lotion first. If you're used to the Tret I'd use it after in a moisturiser. If the Tret burns HA can put the fire out, water will make it sting more.
The HA also helps if you decide to add glycolic acid to your routine but without waiting.

TheFormidableMrsC · 02/08/2023 00:36

Inkey List, Ordinary, Boots own brand, Primark. None of those break the bank and they all do the same job. Just make sure your skin is damp when you apply it.

Hyaluronic "acid" isn't an active like other acids. You can use it with anything and it doesn't really matter when in a routine you use it if it's just HA without any other ingredient added.

I've had the same experience but I read you are meant to apply to damp skin. I'm giving it another go, I use the Vichy one.
