Teen eyebrows

jeaux90 · 30/07/2023 10:28

My teen (14) is really self conscious of her eyebrows.

She gets a thick monobrow which I started to try and help her with one of those electric eyebrow shapers but it only lasts a couple of days.

Plucking is not an option as she is ASD and the repeated pain isn't something she can deal with.

I'm no expert on this as I am really fair and a few tweezer movements resolve mine.

What's the best solution here that's the least painful?

It's tricky because the easiest/quickest solution would be threading or waxing - I have a monobrow too and quite thick eyebrows that need shaping

It does sting quite a lot though. Especially the first time.

I would dose her up on paracetamol & see if there's any anaesthetic cream you could put on & wipe off just before the appointment

Worth a try I think. It doesn't take long, I'm in and out in 5 minutes when I get mine done.

jeaux90 · 30/07/2023 10:41

@AHugeTinyMistake I agree but 16 is the min age you can get this done she's 14.

Have you tried the Braun epilator? I don't want to wax her at home as I have zero experience of that and feels a bit risky Grin but great advice on the numbing cream!

Waxing. For me it stings a bit but thats over in a few seconds. Could you take her somewhere reputable and ask them to explain the process to her? Even try a small patch first?

reducemug · 30/07/2023 10:43

I am not aware of 16 being the waxing age. I take my DD who is 15 to have her legs waxed at the place i go to. Scotland might be different.

mariiiajane · 30/07/2023 10:50

There is no legal age limit on waxing.

My 10 year old has an eyebrow wax every few months and I keep ontop of the mono brow with tweezers for her.

She had crippling anxiety about it and hated the look of her eyebrows. Now she is happy and confident. They are still nice and thick but tidy.

jeaux90 · 30/07/2023 10:51

Thanks everyone I thought that there was a minimum age but on reading again it just needs adult consent.
She really hates her eyebrows so I really wanted to get this resolved for her.

Is it just the monobrow she would want waxing? I got my brows waxed for the first time the other day 😅 I'm 26 and had always been afraid of waxing! The monobrow area was the least painful bit by far so maybe just ask them to do that but and nowhere else if that's what she wants done. (Under the brows/above the eyes was the worst for me).

Coffeeandcake12 · 30/07/2023 11:06

I find threading less painful than waxing and it lasts quite a while.

jeaux90 · 30/07/2023 11:06

@isitaline97 yes just her brows I really am not into removing of body hair but totally onboard with eyebrow trimming for her and I did think that too and I'll dose her up with some paracetamol/numbing cream first Grin

I also find threading less painful.

However, it’s lots of little plucks. So I would guess you want to avoid that.

if it’s just the monobrow bit I would find a good local water and call or go in and explain. See what they say. The in between the eye bits could be done in one.

wheredidyouputthekeys · 30/07/2023 13:25

Hair removal cream?

jeaux90 · 30/07/2023 13:45

@wheredidyouputthekeys yes I did think about that but with the ASD the strong smell might be an issue and I'm worried about my accuracy skills Grin, I think I might try her with a quick one hit wax if they think they can get it off in one then top up with an accurate epilator in between? Gawd I don't know, I'm really fair so not quite sure.

wheredidyouputthekeys · 30/07/2023 13:48

Yes very eggy isn't it. I find epilation more painful than waxing but my sister swears by it so I suppose it varies per person.

You've got me thinking....I wonder if there's a hair removal cream that doesn't stink...

IggyAce · 30/07/2023 13:51

If you’re in the north east I know an excellent brow lady, who would be very understanding of your daughter ASD.

YoshysMum · 30/07/2023 13:57

You could try an eyebrow razor, pain free and easy to use.

UncomfortableSilence · 30/07/2023 14:06

DD2 has recently started getting her brows done, she has thick dark hair too. She has them waxed but was terrified of threading for some reason. The ladies are lovely where we go and they convinced her to get more shape and she said it hurts less than the wax. So now she has a combination of both, find a salon with highly experienced staff for brows....oh and from someone who uses a Braun Epilator myself, do not put it anywhere near your DDs face Grin

jeaux90 · 30/07/2023 16:31

@IggyAce thanks for that but we down south in Oxfordshire super kind though.

OP posts:
jeaux90 · 30/07/2023 16:32

@YoshysMum I have been with one of those trimmers but her hair is so thick it grows back within a couple of days.

OP posts:
jeaux90 · 30/07/2023 16:33

@UncomfortableSilence good shout, there is a place near me they literally just do facial threading and waxing so I'll give them a go.

Wax strips, cut them up so they're less wide than you want them and use a nude pencil to guide where you want to wax. Do it yourself. Before doing you can use an ice cube or get something from Boots to numb the area.

NancyJoan · 30/07/2023 21:19

Have a look at the Parissa brow waxing strips. I bought them in desperation during lockdown, didn’t really think they would work. But they are so good I’ve never gone back to the salon. They are v small, so easy to be accurate. I warm them slightly on the hot tap first, to give them a bit more grip.

Oceanus · 30/07/2023 21:27

Like the PP said, which I forgot before, it's important to warm them up. I stick them in my boobs for a bit... 😁

Meredusoleil · 30/07/2023 21:33

I just use Nair facial wax strips on my dd1's (14) monobrow. Have been doing it for awhile now. She says it doesn't even hurt anymore!

timegoingtooquickly · 30/07/2023 21:35

I cut face waxing strips in half length ways for dd and then wax the brow. So quick!

ShyTed · 30/07/2023 21:39

Take her to a good brow specialist. They will know exactly what to do and how to relax and reassure her. If she would prefer to be talked through what is happening, im sure they will be happy to do this. A few of my younger clients like me to do a countdown 3,2,1. It’s never as bad as they think.
I am a brow specialist and I have quite a few young clients who’s mums want their brows done “properly” from the start.
