SPF sun damage

Lovelyjubblypancakes · 29/07/2023 13:01

For the last year or so I’ve been using SPF 50 every day. I’ve never had so much so damage on my face. I’m beginning to think it just doesn’t work at all. I mainly use Nivea but also one I got in an advent calendar. I don’t like using chemical sunscreen anyway and used mineral screens spf 30 before.
Has anyone else experienced this?

You might find this chemist interesting, it's her specialist area

Be careful with your sources. The ‘Environmental Working Group’ are not toxicologists. They are ‘green’ lobbyists and whilst that is fine, they are not a good source safety research or data on toxicology or levels of chemical safety in humans.

Thanks, that's a great resource.

Lab Muffin is a fabulous resource, as is.. . She is a research scientist who has skin concerns of her own and isn’t into the “fluff” either. She is a bit American, but her reviews on specific K & J sunscreens are very thorough.

I happen to be using the Round Labs sunscreen mentioned above and it’s my third one. I love it. Very hydrating and leaves no trace that you’re wearing it. I should throw in that I am 51 and using tretinoin, so skin is on the thirsty side. I also love Beauty of Joseon (moisturising and hydrating with probiotics for glow.). The SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Water Fit Sun Serum is one of my other favourite chemical sunscreens . Canmake Mermaid Skin Gel (clear). (That one is my fave hybrid one, btw. I use the clear version if I’m going to be exposed to sun for a long time like at the markets or the green version for the beach as it has more physical sunscreen. Don’t touch the white one as it’s like paint.) I also have
Skin 1004 Madagascar Centella Air Fit Suncream Spf50+ Pa++++. This is a physical sunscreen that isn’t uncomfortable to wear. I use this on sensitive areas when it’s very humid or I am going to the beach or having prolonged sun exposure. I do prefer the Make:Prem UV Defense Daily Sun Fluid SPF 50+ PA++++ because it’s a hybrid, has ingredients that absolutely cool the skin and has a more “lotiony” feel. (It disappears quickly and has a lovely finish.) It’s also in a much bigger bottle. Speaking of which, this is my every day body sunscreen. I just use it like a body lotion. It’s cheap, it’s fab and it is in a 400ml bottle. Obviously it’s not as full-on as others, but for Day to day use it’s perfect. KUMANO COSME - Reihaku Hatomugi UV Care & Moisturizing The UV Milky Gel SPF31 PA+++
I have a new one at the moment… the Purito Daily Soft Touch sunscreen. I’ve only used it twice, but it’s delicious. It’s more creamy than the others, and is full of lovely ceramides. Perfect for our dry, sunny “winter” where I live. (Today is 25’C, hence the air quotes.). Anyhow, this is what I used this morning after cleansing. No need for more skincare or moisturiser. I can attest that it doesn’t sting my eyes. It disappears much more quickly than I anticipated and while it’s early days, I think it could be a new favourite.

If you have any specific ones you’re interested in, I’m happy to let you know my feelings if I’ve tried them.

Thanks so much @Fraaahnces! Will check those out. I struggle with some stinging my eyes too. Even if I don’t apply near my eyes they seem to migrate!

lochmaree · 30/07/2023 08:30

thank you for the Instagram link, found that really interesting and informative (and reassuring) I find sunscreen a complete minefield for the kids especially! currently use P20 10hr kids on the toddler and Green People baby on the baby. The Yuka app rates the P20 one quite badly so had been thinking of changing it but maybe not necessary. And now wondering if the Green People one has high enough protection. Also have the ThinkBaby one too.

I just ordered facetheory day cream for me, but perhaps better off using the P20 kids 10hr one. really interesting thread!

Peridot1 · 30/07/2023 13:13

@Fraaahnces - just ordered three of the sunscreens you mentioned! The Purito, the Beauty of Joseon and the SKIN1004 Madasgar Centella Hyalu-Cica Water Fit Sun Serum. Plus a couple of other bits!

LondonQueen · 30/07/2023 13:49

You're probably not using enough.

LondonQueen · 30/07/2023 13:50

Pressed send too soon. You're probably not using enough, you need a teaspoon to cover your face effectively. You also need to reapply every 2 hours to get the quoted SPF on the bottle. They don't always make that very clear though.

violetcuriosity · 30/07/2023 14:12

I get really bad melasma so I've worn factor 50 on my face and neck since I was 25 (33 now) I've tried loads of different ones and wear them every day all year round.

My favourites are-

  • body shop
  • tropic
  • L'Oréal revitalift

My skin is in pretty good shape (if I do say so myself 😂) my younger brother has lots more wrinkles than me so I definitely feel they work. Maybe try one of the ones above.

Fraaahnces · 30/07/2023 14:46

@Peridot1 - just popping back to say that Ultra Violette and Mecca both nice sunscreens and there is nothing wrong with them at all. I prefer the versatility of K&J sunscreens because they are formulated differently and can carry more actives, etc, doubling as a moisturiser if required. They also feel nicer. I really hope you enjoy your new sunscreens!!!

Fraaahnces · 30/07/2023 15:13

Just popping back to say that EWG is not a reputable source. They “do their own research” in the same way that an anti-Vax campaigner does or a door-knocking god-botherer. If you want to, look at their ingredients ratings and then compare with up to date scientific explanations. They’re wildly off a lot of the time.

I'm sure I read that tropic failed a Which test lately that the Spf didn't offered what it advertised, I'll see if I can find the article

@Fraaahnces thanks for your very detailed posts, really interesting to read. I wonder if you can also advise the best place to buy the products? thanks :-)

BlessYourBlackCottonSocksOnTheRider · 30/07/2023 17:55

@Fraaahnces thanks so much. Very informative. I’m in the uk, where would I buy these products? Is Steylvena ok?

Fraaahnces · 31/07/2023 01:16

@BlessYourBlackCottonSocksOnTheRider Stylevana is only good if the products you order are in stock. (It does show you…) Otherwise you can wait until the cows come home and their customer service is not great if you need to chase it up. (Stuff that een missing in a November took until March to resolve.) I have stated before that I wouldn’t use them again, but I lied. Just make sure that the product is in stock and it’s fine.

Peridot1 · 31/07/2023 08:08

@BlessYourBlackCottonSocksOnTheRider - I ordered yesterday from YesStyle. I made sure to only order items in stock.

MandyFl0ss · 31/07/2023 08:34

This is a great thread. Thank you.

I am 52 and my face looks pretty decent. Just this year I have noticed a couple of sun discoloration spots unfortunately. One is close to the eye, as I always avoid product near the eye because they get extremely itchy when product travels in.

My decolletage however, is extremely damaged. Apart from covering and wearing max protection, is there anything non invasive I can do to repair the area a little bit?

One more question, I wear make up every day. Is there a sun block that truly doubles up as primer and doesn't produce oil?

Oh, and my final question. The concept of re-applying every 2-hours, I can see how that could work on holiday if you're in a hot country by the sea not wearing make-up, etc. But back home, on a daily basis, when you have a face full of make up, how can you possibly do that?

BigButtons · 29/07/2023 14:09

I have used ultra sun for years- spf 50. I get a 400ml vat of the stuff. It has a pump. Have never burnt or changed colour. I wear it 360 days a year. Even in the middle of winter, even if I am just sitting indoors all day.

Same.
I’m 45 and have no wrinkles. Some fine lines around my eyes - barely visible.

In very hot climates I use a hat or cap and sunglasses.

Fraaahnces · 31/07/2023 08:44

@mrstrickland - I’m reluctant to advise best sites to purchase things because prices vary all the time and I live in Australia. I would do a simple google search and see what’s out there.

Peridot1 · 31/07/2023 08:49

@MandyFl0ss - I use a spray to top up during the day. There are a few on the market now.

For the décolletage area the Prai neck cream is supposed to be good. And always always bring all of your skin care down there. Especially the SPF.

BlessYourBlackCottonSocksOnTheRider · 31/07/2023 10:58

@Peridot1 @Fraaahnces so helpful, thank you.
