Are these trousers frumpy?

I'm in my 30s and I really like these trousers. I know I shouldn't care what anyone else thinks, but I don't want to look like an old lady! I'm only asking/having doubts because of where they are from...

Are these trousers frumpy?
OP posts:
KPops22 · 27/07/2023 09:19

Are they not just straight leg jeans?

Shinyandnew1 · 27/07/2023 09:21

My DH would call those ‘Michael Portillo’ trousers! My DH is no connoisseur of fashion though and is not to be listened to! Buy them, try them on with stuff and if you don’t like them-take them back! If you love them, wear them.

VeridicalVagabond · 27/07/2023 09:22

My 15 year old daughter has a similar pair actually, so I don't think you run the risk of looking a granny! She wears them with big chunky black creepers and band tees though which maybe isn't quite the look you're going for 😁

Maddy70 · 27/07/2023 09:48

They are just old fashioned. Not to my taste.

astarsheis · 27/07/2023 10:23

I might be an 'old' lady in your eyes...but I can assure you there is nothing frumpy about me.
I wouldn't wear them lovely because they are pretty much 'off' trend 😉

Are all old ladies frumpy?

The ones who dress in old-lady-style are. There are old ladies who don't look "old lady" despite their wrinkles. It's so obvious what the OP means. Sick of the policing of language in this board

Bey · 27/07/2023 11:46

Op I understand why you asked, it's the cut of them that puts me off, they're kind of in-between a skinny and straight leg cut, which could give a "frumpy" vibe in my opinion.

i think the outfit you have in mind for them would look better with skinny leg trousers in that colour.

The policing of language is really unfair on this board. It comes across as snarky and it makes it miserable to post on. If we were all in a place together in person and every time someone asks a question they got jumped on for the words they used (when we all know they are not meant in a malicious intent) then it would become a draining environment and people would withdraw and stop engaging.

WeightInLine · 27/07/2023 11:53

Of course someone in their thirties doesn’t want to look like someone typically 60+.

This is news to no-one.

And frumpy is a useful word.

FedUpFanAnn · 27/07/2023 11:53

They're just shown with absolutely the wrong shoes here. The nicest sexiest jeans can look terrible with the wrong shoes. Buy the trousers!

Floisme · 27/07/2023 11:59

It would be 'policing' if posts were reported and deleted for language. I wouldn't agree with that.

I think there's a difference between 'old lady' as a factual term and using it in a derogatory way, as code for ugly or old fashioned, and I think in this instance the line was crossed.
When it's used in this way it does not make old ladies - and as I've said, I am close to being one myself - feel as if their opinions are welcome.

Anyway my problem with the trousers is that I think they look far too neat and tidy. Personally I would either look for a looser fit but, if you like the style, then I think they need teaming with things that will knock the 'niceness' out of them, e.g an old Ramones T shirt or a great big massive old plaid shirt, maybe a couple of tattoos.

Clarinet1 · 27/07/2023 12:05

I’m thinking kind of Sarah Hadland as Stevie in
Miranda. I’m pretty sure she wore a pair of straight leg red trousers with either a cami or a close-fitting hoodie.

lopsyl · 27/07/2023 12:20

They're very dated and look like they'll show up every lump and bump.

I'm a short size 8 and they'd make me look like a circus act.

If you want to avoid looking frumpy, try something more up to date. Cos has lots of wide-leg trousers that hang nicely and look good with plain tshirts.

Even with those shoes they'd be a lot better if 1-2 inches shorter imo.

But the chunky boots big jumper would be fine as they are

Clothes can be :-
boring, dull, badly cut, badly styled, cheap looking, made of or look as if they are made of nylon, dreary, depressing, too big, too small, too tight, make you look mad, make you look like a [insert any job requiring special work wear], make you look like [insert anyone, real, alive or dead or fictional, you wouldn't want to look like] or , and this is a recent good one , look like a Korean dictator in leisure wear.

"Old lady style" as well as being ageist isn't even a good descriptor.

"Frumpy" means whatever you (general you) want it to mean. I don't like these trousers because they're dull . If I did use "frumpy" which I don't, it would be for the many, polyester horrors on wedding guest threads - SilkFred, Roman and the like.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 27/07/2023 14:53

It doesn't matter what the label says.. cut it out if it bothers you
I think it's the way they're styled which makes them look a little dowdy but with boots( clumpy ones!) They would be fine
Age is just a number.
I'm 58 and still dress like a tomboy!

almostoverthehill · 27/07/2023 15:35

Would probably be ok with an ankle boot

With a shoe/trainer if ankle was more fitted and a little shorter.

Just my personal opinion

Snowtrails · 27/07/2023 15:41

Fashion is a funny thing. Those trousers would have been very trendy in 1994. I suppose a lot of the trendy young ladies who wore them then are now frumpy old ladies, even though they are still wearing exactly the same thing.

EmmaPaella · 27/07/2023 15:47

I was a trendy young coloured jeans-wearing girl in 1994 and I am not an old lady yet!

SaltyGod · 27/07/2023 15:52

If you love them, buy them. Life is too short to be worried. Buy things you love and that make you happy, wear them with confidence.

If you’re 50:50 then don’t buy them, perhaps the clever Style and Beauty people can find another pair in a similar colour but different cut that you like more (it reads as if you like the colour but unsure on the cut, apologies if I have this incorrect)

Thebirdhouse · 27/07/2023 17:46

I think they look frumpy tbh.

I had similar from Zara in my 20s.

I would t wear them now because I’m a size 12 and skinny trousers make my legs look like parsnips.

There has been a lot of discussion about ageism on this board recently.

I, for one, do not want to dress like a 70 year old or a 20 year old. Of course not every 70 year old wears beige, but many do. Of course not every 20 year old wears boob tubes but many do. I do not want t to wear clothes that make me look like mutton dressed as lamb.

JeandeServiette · 27/07/2023 17:50

They're quite 90s, styled the right way. But if you have this morbid fear of looking like an "old lady" (have you actually seen what older women wear these days?) what are you doing browsing adamant in the first place?
