Thoughts on Loafer Mules

I've recently been mulling over buying Loafer Mules. I have big feet so was never a fan of the pointed ones incase they made my feet look even bigger.
I've seen more round toed ones which look nice. I'm just not sure if i should buy them or not. I've never owned a pair before.
does anyone own loafer mules and love them? What do you wear them with?
or does anyone detest them?

Loafer mules? Is that what they're called these days? They used to be called backless loafers (back in my day lol).

I like them but it's important to take good care of your feet if you wear backless loafers (same as with sandals) as no-one wants to see a load of rough hard skin at the back of your feet/on your heels.

Also make sure they fit correctly so the back of the loafer finishes AFTER the back of your foot rather than your foot hanging off. Worth considering buying half a size up to be on the safe side.

I have a bright blue pair which I bought prepandemic. We're not allowed to wear mules to work so can't wear them there. If I could I would, they'd be great. So I wear them for casual nights out in the summer. Nice with jeans or a casual dress.

Forget to add, I wear them quite a lot, especially when travelling as they're quick to slip on and off. I have some Tod's that I've worn on and off for 20 years but more recent ones are by JW Anderson and Bottega Veneta.

@HundredMilesAnHour Hahaha definitely don't want to embarrass myself with rough hard skin. I always pumice and use a good foot cream.
ahh nice i'll have a look at JW and Bottega i'm not sure if they'll do my size

@JaninaDuszejko your ones sounds lovely. The ones i'm looking at are only available in black or white.
good to know they're versatile with jeans or a dress. I think i'm definitely going to buy some :)

To me a standard mule stays on in one of two ways:

Raised heel so feet are pushed forward

Horizontal strap that grips the foot

I have always liked the look of loafer mules, but as they are invariably flat(ish) or don't have a horizontal grip, how do they stay on?

I used to have a pair of powder blue backless loafers, several years ago and loved them. I have horrible bunions so never wear sandals in public, but these looked good while being cooler than shoes. The only thing to make sure of, as a pp said is that there is plenty of clearance between the end of your foot and the mule, as if your heel is right on the end where it turns up slightly, it's very painful.

I'm now thinking I should get another pair, they go with practically anything.

I have two pairs from Gucci which I could never afford now but love! My favourite pair are actually red and I wear them loads in spring through to autumn. The other pair is black and I regret getting them and not a full loafer as they are heavier looking so I don’t reach for them in the same way.

they come high up the foot so never a problem keeping them on the foot.

I like them. I wear them to work in the summer and think they look smart enough without having to resort to sandals in the office.
