Come and tell me about your Doc Martens

The rain has turned my thoughts to Autumn dressing, and lovely boots.

I really fancy a pair of oxblood DM’s but am not sure what style would work for me.

Here are my hopes:

They need to be super soft and comfy, no stiffness or (god forbid!) heel rubbing.
Would work on little (size 4) feet.
Wearable with shorter skirts, midi skirts and skinny jeans/ jeggings.

As you can tell from the above, I’m no style icon but I love a good boot, and remember my last pair of Doc’s (retired in 1998) fondly. They are really expensive nowadays so I don’t want to make an expensive uncomfortable mistake.

Any fellow Doc wearers fancy sharing their thoughts?

I wear doc marten shoes rather than boots as i can get away with them for work and always with dresses for me.

Mine are possibly oxblood? They are a red type colour

TimeToMoveIt · 24/07/2023 16:25

The pascal ones are the most comfortable imo. I have 3 pairs of them in different patterns and they are great, also one pair of normal The Who dms that kill my feet!

shrumps · 24/07/2023 16:27

I have the black Chelsea Boot style. I absolutely love them and live in them from around October onwards. I remember them being hard to break in when I had them 30 years ago, but this pair (bought autumn) were a dream - so comfy from day one. Get them - they are the best boots ever!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 24/07/2023 16:30

I wear Pascal-style DM boots. They're soft leather and don't shred your feet. I wear them with pretty much everything tbh.

Eviebeans · 24/07/2023 16:43

I have 3 pairs of shoes - cherry red lace ups
black t bar and floral double t bar
different favourites on different days
bought 2nd hand so the hard yards of wearing them in were done by someone else’s feet

JengaCupboard · 24/07/2023 16:48

I have several and have had no breaking in issues with any - patent 14 hole pascals, burgundy (ox blood?) Audrick platform Chelsea boot (my absolute favorite - some sort of special extra padded sole and super soft leather) and currently 'breaking in' a new pair of Sinclair but so far no discomfort at all.

Their sales are worth a look, and they generally offer 10% off new customer's non-sale items. I love Docs, totally worth the money IMO.

I've got a pair of kids Doc Martin Boots in oxblood. Size 3. Much softer than the adult ones but have a zip at the side as well as the laces if that matters to you. They are almost 1/2 the price and I think kids are up to size 5.

I wear them with black dress or skirt with tights for work and with jeans outside of work

amylou8 · 24/07/2023 18:08

Another vote for pascals. I have to take insole out for a bit of extra height or they rub across the top of my foot. Once I've done that they're the most comfy boots.

Look at Solovair too - they are the "original". DM people, since they sold the DM name and production was moved to China,if you like oxblood, you'll probably love their "burgundy rub off" colour.

This. Solovairs are much better quality. The "new" DMs feel like cheap knockoffs. They probably fine as fashion items, but if you want to wear them a lot, you are better off buying Solovairs.

neverenoughchelseaboots · 24/07/2023 18:51

I bought the doc marten Alyson in brown (quite a cherry brown) last year and have worn them incessantly including a daily 2 mile round trip and they look like new.

They’re super comfy and I wear with cropped jeans and dresses.

faffadoodledo · 24/07/2023 18:55

At the risk of derailing, Solovairs are comfier and more hard wearing. And make in the UK. And I think more stylish and less ubiquitous

I believe they are the originators of the airwear sole and used to make them for Doc Marten before production of Docs was shipped to the far east and quality declined

I live in Solovairs from November to March and they're the only thing that make be look forward to winter!

SemperIdem · 24/07/2023 18:57

As a size 4, you will be able to buy the youth sizes at about half the price. I’m a 5 and do this.

They are defiantly gentler on your feet than adult versions of the same styles.

SemperIdem · 24/07/2023 18:57

^definitely

Me too!
I got mine for my birthday last autumn. Wore them straight out of the box with nit problem!

Have enjoyed wearing them again a few times recently in all the rain!

Carsarelife · 24/07/2023 19:01

I have the black bought in October last year. They were really comfy straightaway and I bought the soft leather version not the waxy type ones. I didn't really have to break them in, and wear with skirts, dresses, jeans, leggings. All looks good.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 24/07/2023 19:08

I have quite a few pairs. I have a pair of Chelsea's in oxblood and black. They are my go tos as they are supremely comfortable and a bit smarter than the pascals. I also have gold, rainbow and unicorn glitter pascals, black knee high embroidered roses ones, shiny oxblood pascals and some brown Chelsea's too! I live in them in autumn/winter.

Where can you find the youth sizes? Just looked on the DM website & they only have 6 different styles, I'm wanting the Vonda boots & the Leonore fur lined Chelsea boots, I'm a size 5.

I find the website itself can be a bit limited but Schuh usually carry the youth sizes and if you have a Doc Marten shop near you, they will too.

Derrymum123 · 24/07/2023 19:25

Pascal in cherry red. Soft leather and easy to look after. You would probably get away with children's size at a much lower cost. You won't regret them.

CornishGem1975 · 24/07/2023 19:37

I can't see that DMs were put on this earth for any other reason than as WEAPONS OF TORTURE. I'll never buy new again, only already broken in!

NatashaDancing · 24/07/2023 20:11

The most cripplingly painful footwear I've owned.

They also looked weird on me. My feet are 37 and they looked huge. It must have been some sort of optical illusion. They look great on other people.

FatCatBum · 24/07/2023 22:50

Mine are the work of the devil, possibly the most uncomfortable footwear I have owned

DrCoconut · 24/07/2023 23:13

I have the black fur lined ones. They're coming on holiday next week given the weather. I love them and they were far comfier to break in than I remember DM's being in the 90s. DMs are the only brand of shoe that lasts me more than 2 seasons. The plimsolls I got for Christmas were in the bin worn out by Easter and they weren't from shoe zone.
