Style and beauty on turning 40

I turned 39 this year which has seen lots of changes. I ended my LTR, lost a fair amount of weight and have started ‘living’ again.

I get a lot of comments that I look young for my age (maybe they’re just being nice) but I’m noticing the signs of aging, fine lines, thinning eyebrows and the grey hairs are accelerating. I’ve not paid much attention to my appearance for a few years now, all my makeup is old and my wardrobe no longer fits me. I dress in Asda jeggings and T-shirts and use micellar water and Aldi moisturiser at the moment to give you an idea of my current style and beauty regime.

So starting again in the run up to and in my 40’s, what things, products, makeup and style should I be thinking about please? I’m willing to spend a bit of money on good products or perhaps style advice if such a thing exists.

It's worth investing in Dermatica skincare. The difference from using tret is visible. Wonderful stuff.

Regarding styling, there is good but affordable lady that does your colours (Emily Innes on IG) if you're interested in that, recommend her!

Six weeks to total revamp? | Mumsnet

i am the frumpy mum in the school playground. Fat. Pasty. Frumpy clothes. Older than average (had children late). Crunchy hair. Shy. You know the one...

Well here’s my two cents.

I turned 40 last year and although I felt fine, enthusiastic about it even, I suddenly felt my age about 6 months ago. I felt a bit flat, grey, lifeless.

So- I got my hair coloured and chopped (hadn’t gotten it done properly in ages and it took a few years off for sure). I started “doing” my eyebrows- just pencilling them a bit more to make them look more defined.

I also started properly looking after my skin. Better late than never! I use oil cleanser and hot water/cloth, retinol at night and I invested in Elemis Pro-collagen moisturer with SPF. Only started the latter recently so I can’t comment on it really but my skin definitely feels good!

I also started figuring out my “style essence”. Now, this can get complicated, but you can get a reasonable gist of the idea on this website: https://theconceptwardrobe.com/develop-personal-style

I found it brilliant. It has helped me understand why certain colours and styles of clothing just “work” for me. And how to find clothes that make me shine, rather than having the clothes wear me IYSWIM.

I’ve also cut way down on alcohol (not that I was a big drinker), reduced sugar to a more occasional splurge rather than a regular food group, begun to exercise regularly (nothing too intense but my smart watch was a revelation for motivating me to get in my 150 mins per week), and started eating at least 2 pieces of fruit and 5 types of veg per day (I think I was probably “skinny fat” and a bit micronutrient deficient before that!).

Also getting proper sleep and drinking more water instead of caffeine being my major fluid source!

It’s been really fun focusing on me for a change and none of this stuff has been a huge stretch- I still have DC and job so it’s not like there are swathes of free time. It’s just about being mindful for myself!

Good luck with your journey! Use this as an opportunity to build a healthier and happier you😊
