I know it will be cold and possibly wet. We are going for a week and plan to squeeze every bit out of every day. Can anyone advise what I definitely should take (and maybe what not to bother with) please.

I’d finalise packing nearer the time and double check the weather, as I went last year when it’s normally freezing but it was unseasonably warm.

But very comfy shoes! My Nikes served me well. Also portable phone charger if you don’t already have one, needed my phone loads during the day for checking directions and taking photos.

think ahead better than I did if you plan to shop! I didn’t leave much room in my case for shopping, whoops 😣people also advised me to take tags off shopping and not keep it in original bags as may have to pay taxes or something on return, but since I didn’t really shop I didn’t do this so not sure on the credibility of it..

hope you have a great time!

Hi how exciting ! I went in January just before lockdown- it was lovely and cold and we did have a little snow - I would say def bring a warm large scarf as the wind can be brutal and a warm hat
i found it easier to have warm coat that you can take off and carry rather than lots of layers because as soon as you get inside anywhere you will be too warm - I wore long warm boots and a long wool coat scarf and hat and I was fine
wear comfortable footwear as you’ll end up waking miles !
enjoy 😀

Wait but also be prepared if that makes sense. We had a week there in February this year. I bought boots, coats, hats, gloves, scarves and thermals. What we did need was shorts and t shirts until the last couple of days when we needed all the winter gear.

We were really surprised at the weather. It was about 18-20 degrees for the first couple of days. We did need a jacket, not a coat, first thing and last thing but during the day it was glorious.

When the weather changed it was baltic! Beautiful cold days.

A down filled coat. Wool did not cut it.

Thank you all! Good advice - I was so blinkered about it being freezing that I hadn’t considered it might be mild!

Yes check the weather before you go. But if it is the usual level of cold you will need warm boots (you won’t loom out of place in the day with snow boots) and a down filled coat, preferably waterproof. Obviously decent hat, gloves, etc. Some
decent layers. I wear the Uniqlo heat tech long sleeve tops religiously during winter.

I have a uniqlo lightweight waterproof down coat so that’ll be the first thing in the case 👍

New York in winter is fabulous - have been in December, January and February. February was the coldest I've ever felt on a holiday but this is mainly as I packed badly. Have since learnt! If the weather does look like it's going to be cold, layers are your friend. Uniqlo heattech are great and pretty affordable, Isobaa merino even more comfortable (and stand up well to repeat wear). I was so cold as I took a "nice" full length wool coat that was useless against the bitter, dry cold wind that howled down the avenues. On day two of the trip I bought a North Face metropolis parka and a pair of Uggs having seen pretty much every other woman in NYC wearing them and that made the trip a comfy, warm joy. My NF is still going strong a good 15 years later! Having been to Iceland and Germany on a few very cold city trips now I'd recommend Sorel boots for warmth and comfort to walk lots and still the North Face or if it might be snowy/sleeting, a Didriksons parka. If I was going to upgrade my NF I'd now go for the longer length triple c parka. I was actually able to just wear 'normal' clothes with that on, my Uggs, NF fleecy lined mittens and trapper hat. Stylish? No. Warm and quick to take off on entering a lovely cocktail bar? Yes. A trapper hat (I've got a Fjallraven one) was a godsend walking about but I did also use Ugg ear muffs, too to avoid hat hair in the evenings! You'll walk loads, take your warmest most comfortable shoes or waterproof ones if the weather looking mild - Teva do very comfortable ones as well as Sorel. Personally, I'm very happy with second hand if in good nick as you can get better quality for less and you've got enough time to scour Vinted, eBay and Depop and pick up last winter's styles still in the sale (I've just bought some Sorel boots in the sale for £50 from £130) ready for next winter as I've worn my Teva's soles flat). Hope you have an amazing time!

Oh, and though it was FREEZING it was clear and sunny so don't forget your sunglasses!
