Best shops for real gold (not plated!) jewellery

After years of being skint, I see a period in a few months where I might be able to treat myself to jewellery (this may be wishful thinking but the browsing will be fun).

What I want and everyone else seems to have is plain simple gold jewellery- like nice Huggies that aren’t absolutely tiny, a simple necklace that isn’t spider-web thin thus destined to snap on the second wear (looking at you, Sezane).

Also have a jewellery box full of pretty but now pointless greying gold plated stuff so would rather just buy proper stuff slowly.

Any suggestions?

Ooo, can I join ? I need some nice solid gold earrings.

Donewithrenovating · 22/07/2023 14:32

Yes please do, but alas we may be alone.

Where is all the nice jewellery! I look at my mums generation and they all seem to have nice, not-ostentatious at all, but solid gold jewellery that is suitable to keep on. I realise gold is really expensive these days but so is buying gold-coloured or gold plated stuff for wild prices that is unusable after a couple of years!

I'm joining too. I like plain, stylish jewellery. Clean lines, not fussy. I like the style of Skagen stuff (for reference) but it's all plated.

I recently was trying to buy a simple bangle as a gift for a special birthday. I had a £500 budget. All I could get was stylish and plated or overly frilly/diamond cut and real gold. I gave up in the end!

Tiffany gold vía eBay - esp with summer coming up. Lovely lovely colour gold

iamthattree · 22/07/2023 15:05

I'd like to follow this too. Small hoops or slightly interesting studs, pendant necklace. Nothing fancy but nice day to day stuff.

AlwaysGinPlease · 22/07/2023 15:31

Jumping on. Tired of everything suddenly being gold plated or "vermeil" that's everywhere!

AssertiveGertrude · 22/07/2023 15:35

I usually go to an independent Jeweller (only have one or two decent pieces)

Oaksilver · 22/07/2023 15:49

It would be cheaper to fly to Moroccan and get actual 18ct gold there than pay the crazy prices for flimsy 9ct gold here.

Antique/vintage/secondhand jewelley is vastly cheaper than new, and often better quality. Most cities/big towns have reputable independent jewellers that sell a mixture of old and new. There are also online sellers - the website Selling Antiques is a shop-window for many different dealers (who often have their own websites as well): https://www.sellingantiques.co.uk/t/antique-gold-vintage-jewellery

I've lost weight recently and every time I lose a stone in weight I treat myself to a piece of jewelry. I've found a second hand jeweler on eBay that has some lovely pieces and all come with a certificate of authenticity and insurance value. The ruby is 1.3 carats with tiny diamond chip shoulders.

Also sapphire 1.6 carats and diamond halo. Again 9 carat gold hallmarked and certificate of authenticity plus insurance value.

And to wear with the Sapphire ring some sapphire and diamond earrings again certificate of authenticity and insurance valuation. Guess what I paid for these 3 pieces of jewelry? All pieces come in beautiful presentation boxes.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/07/2023 17:22

Jeremy Herber is fantastic,I have a few pieces. He will make you what you want too.

Ihaveawonderfulpartner · 22/07/2023 17:24

Second Costco. My partner bought me a beautiful necklace and earrings from there for my birthday that I have worn continually since.

caringcarer · 22/07/2023 18:26

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor ok, so the Sapphire was £140, the Ruby £138 and the sapphire earrings £47.50 all had postage of £8.95 and registered signed for. I've got valuations for insurance certificates of £500 for Sapphire, £600 for Ruby and £175 for earrings. The rings were both advertised for £200 each but had an offers button so I offered £120 they counter offered £150 then I counter offered £140/£138 and they accepted. You can get some absolute bargains that are all hallmarked 9 or 18 caray gold.

Fantastic!! Congratulations on your weight loss too, I do the same, I promised myself if I lost 3 stone I'd buy a bag I'd been lusting after. Now I need to find a 4 stone incentive 😂

claracluck1978 · 22/07/2023 18:35

Check out your local auctions. They will have trained staff who can advise and will have a real mix of modern and antique pieces.

My engagement ring was less than £2,500. It was valued for insurance independently for over £20k.

I buy a piece most months - diamond studs that would rrp at over £1k can be had for £250ish, gold chains sold almost at scrap value and just in need of a polish, watches for a fraction.

I will never buy jewellery from a retail shop & my collection is so unique thanks to that.

Find a good second hand jewellers, you'll get more for your money.
The jewellery quarter in Birmingham is good as well.
