Waterproof winter coat

PingPowKaPowWow · 22/07/2023 09:10

Hi, I am looking for recommendations please! I want to get a stylish, around knee length, maybe a bit longer or shorter, warm winter coat that is waterproof and has a hood. My budget is up to £300 for the right coat.

My current winter coats are currently a long non waterproof one which has a big tear, and a short one which is a bit too snug for me this year.

Any advice please?

I am ready for a winter coat thread and watching with interest.

I was a beautiful, warm, waterproof coat, but think I look for this every year and end up with ugly and waterproof or ok looking and warm but not waterproof 😂

I am thinking I might start wearing two coats on top of each other (one warm, one waterproof)

PingPowKaPowWow · 22/07/2023 09:14

@Espanaes81 yes, not too far from Selfridge's

Didriksons

ChilliPB · 22/07/2023 10:14

My best warm and waterproof coat is from Elvine. It’s a Swedish brand so does properly warm coats. I’d also look at Rains for the waterproof puffers. But agree with PP you’ll see more options in a couple of months!

I do that.

For work I wear a water resistant knee length mac, and a lightweight Uniqlo down jacket under it. The jacket is small and stuffs into my laptop bag easily.

If it's chilly but dry I might just wear the jacket. If it's not v cold I wear the Mac, if it's raining I wear the Mac, if it's raining and cold I wear both. I can carry the jacket with me in case the weather changes.

Then similarly on my hikes, I wear a down jacket for warmth, if it then rains, or gets a lot colder, I put a waterproof shell jacket over it.

For standing around situations I have a Wolfskin knee length water resistant padded coat, but it's so warm I've only worn it about four times in five years.

Seasalt not fashionable but warm and waterproof

nameXname · 22/07/2023 17:37

As previous poster @Traceyislivid said, Didriksons (also Swedish) for waterproofs. I've never found better. Also agree that waterproof shell and lightweight padded inner layer = most flexible and comfortable.

I also have a long padded coat from Rohan; it's very warm and was advertised as water-repellant. It certainly keeps off average rainfall but I would not - for example - wear it for for a long hike in really wet weather. They seem to have sold out of it at the moment, but perhaps something similar will appear in the autumn.

Aworldofmyown · 22/07/2023 20:52

Seasalt do amazing waterproof coats, depends what you mean by stylish!!!

PingPowKaPowWow · 23/07/2023 10:59

@Aworldofmyown I have had a look at the seasalt coats, and none of them are thick and warm, unfortunately. However, the price point is good, and they look quite unfussy, which is good.

@nameXname I have had a look at the didriksons, and none of them look to be very warm, with the exception of one coat, which only came in orange in my size, and looked a bit bulky when I googled people wearing it.

@VanGoghsDog I am not sure that wearing two coats would work for me. I am looking for just the one coat, but I do like the look of the thinner rain coats. So if there is something in that style, but made for warmth, that would be perfect.

Also to note, I recently had a coat, but it was too short in the arms, so I think ideally I would be looking for a coat for tall people.

@Espanaes81 what coats do you think they might have at Selfridge's, I had a look on the website and almost everything was waaay over £300

@ChilliPB while I do like the look of elvine coats, I think none of them seemed particularly waterproof, more shower resistant as far as I could see

Holland Cooper, I have a long padded coat of theirs that I feel really good in when I wear it. They have a nice one that I have my eye on at the moment which is a three in one, but it depends on your style.

@PingPowKaPowWow not sure which ones you’ve looked at but yes some of the Elvine winter coats are shower proof with 5,000mm rating. Although they also have coats rated 10,000mm which I think would be more than enough for most people? Even more that are rated 8,000mm which is more than just shower proof. Depends what you need really! I live in Scotland so need something warm and dry and honestly my Elvine parka is the best coat for this.

The Rains ones are marketed as waterproof but I’m not sure what they have in stock over the summer - hopefully there will be more across the board in a couple of months, when winter ranges come out.

Also worth looking at what rating you actually need - I think 5,000 is probably enough for a lot of people, which opens up almost all the Elvine jackets. I need something rainproof for walking to and from the station, walking the dog etc but if I’m planning on being outdoors in heavy rain for long periods of time I’m probably out hiking for the day and wearing Gore Tex.

@ChilliPB thank you for these links to some lovely coats :) did you get charged any import tax etc when you ordered yours?

I have an Arcteryx gore Tex down insulated parka. It's very warm and waterproof with a hood and doesn't look like a puffer coat at all from the outside. Expensive but worth it.

I've got a Didriksons which I bought online and when it arrived I was concerned that it wouldn't be very warm because it felt quite light weight. It is in fact very warm and very waterproof. It is the perfect standing about in the cold while kids play coat, but is also smart enough for commuting on really cold days.

unhappygolucky · 23/07/2023 21:57

Don’t do Didrikson quality is awful for the price. I have a Canada goose, relapse it’s not tendu anymore but it lasts forever and will keep you warm even in a blizzard and very stylish. Otherwise Uniqlo down coats and get a raincoat for on top when it rains

unhappygolucky · 23/07/2023 21:57

*realize it’s not trendy

unhappygolucky · 23/07/2023 21:59

Also don’t do Rains if you want something truly waterproof, looks nice but not very functional

This is the guide I use for my hiking clothes (current shell is Rab, I've had Salomon in the past too) and think it's annoying that it's not compulsory for all brands who claim their coats are waterproof to label them with this!

LunaTheCat · 24/07/2023 00:34

I bough an Isle Jacobsen for a visit to UK last winter… warm as toast and very waterproof.

Aworldofmyown · 24/07/2023 21:45

PingPowKaPowWow
I respectfully disagree!! They may seem thin but are the warmest coat I own, totally windproof.

SummerSazz · 24/07/2023 21:57

I have the Didrikson Erika Parka. It is hands down the warmest and most waterproof coat I've ever owned. It's not really bulky but in -5 I can just wear a t-shirt underneath on a dog walk.

The hood comes right over your forehead to keep your face dry.
