What to wear for an interview

I have an interview next week for a professional position. What do you think of either of these dresses? Or should I look for something else?

(They are both ankle length)

And not the leopard print, or ankle length.

Quoting myself to expand and say those wouldn't even be suitable for day-to-day and certainly not an interview.

Runnerduck34 · 22/07/2023 13:44

I think second dress is fine, could be teamed with a jacket if you wanted a more formal look.
Wouldnt do leopard print.
A lot depends on the job/ environment/employer.
Cant see whats wrong with longer dress length personally provided its its not ankle length.

OP said they're both ankle length.

You may want to read the OP again?

LauraPausini · 22/07/2023 13:55

It depends on the sector - I see lots of teachers at my school wearing patterned dresses like this.

I work in professional services and don't think matching suits / suit dresses are generally expected these days. That said, I would usually wear something more neutral personally, such as an M&S coloured blazer, wide legged trousers, a neutral top and loafers. The main thing is for you to be presentable and comfortable in whatever you wear.

Good luck with the interview!

greyhairnomore · 22/07/2023 14:11

Last interview ( professional) I wore black wide leg trousers, a black blazer ( not a suit)
Plain raspberry coloured fine knit and black chunky loafers.
I think those dresses are a bit casual.

DaisyThistle · 22/07/2023 14:13

I wouldn't wear a maxi dress to an interview, and I work in an industry where we live in maxi-dresses day to day. The second dress would be good if it were midi. Do you have anything similar which is slightly shorter? I'd avoid animal print.

Or wear fitted trousers and buy a new blouse you feel good in to go with them. Zara has some nice ones at the moment.

WhatWillIWear · 22/07/2023 12:57

But @headcheffer the OP said for a professional position. Which naturally leads people to assume a traditional profession. Those dresses would be an odd choice in my former profession - where a plain dark suit or dress would still be the normal thing for an interview.

And suits nowadays are not the same as they were in the 80’s. Plenty of people wear them in all sorts of colours and shapes without any feeling of constraint.

Obviously if the OP meant a different, more relaxed workplace, then there will be different dress codes. But a loudly patterned maxi dress would still be an odd choice for a formal interview.

Ah sorry, forgive me for thinking I was a professional Grin

Good luck with your interview OP, wear something you feel is smart but comfortable and I hope you get the job.

YukoandHiro · 22/07/2023 15:44

I think the orange based dress with a black blazer is fine for an interview

TheFoz · 22/07/2023 15:49

AlligatorPsychopath · 22/07/2023 11:11

Neither of them. They're both too casual and unstructured. Trousers and shirt would be better. Or shorter, more structured dress with a jacket or even a cardy.

Sorry to get personal, but do you have a weak core? It looks like your posture is putting some strain on your body.

Thanks for all the replies. I am taking on board and going shopping tomorrow! The best I have near me is Next so hopefully I get something there.

It is a civil service role where I’ll be meeting clients daily.

This was an interesting comment, I definitely have a weak core! Pilates instructor is on leave at the moment so waiting for her to get back.

Next is the perfect place to get some more interview professional workwear! Doesn't need to be anything over the top. Classic smart blouse and plain trousers/skirt. Key thing is make sure they fit you well and they arnt too tight or too big

WhatWillIWear · 22/07/2023 15:53

I didn’t mean that. I imagine there’s a huge variety of dress cultures across all the departments of the civil service.

Thisisthedawningoftheageofaquarius · 21/07/2023 23:35

Neither really say interview to me - I mostly see dark pants with a shirt or dress in more muted / classic colours (but I’m in financial services so you may be different)
best of luck tho!

‘Pants’ means underwear in the uk

NancyJoan · 22/07/2023 15:56

I have been involved in lots of interviews recently. Please, wear something that you are comfortable in, so you don’t fiddle and fidget, and wear shoes you can walk in. A silky shirt, tailored trousers and flat shoes is my go-to.

DisforDarkChocolate · 22/07/2023 16:00

I'd wear the second one without a second thought.

People on MN have weird ideas about interview clothes, they'd have you dress as if you were going for a secretary role in the 80s and only had access to Next.

Wear what makes you feel confident and comfortable. If they pick you for your ability to wear flats and a suit and not your performance in the interview it's not a place you want to work.

DisforDarkChocolate · 22/07/2023 16:02

I have interviews all the time because of how I work, I can't remember the last time anyone involved wore a suit.

Cyclingmummy1 · 22/07/2023 18:26

@WhatWillIWear @fredasfrock but the Head wasn't wearing a jacket (it was one of the hottest days of the year) so you can't expect the candidates to.

fredasfrock · 22/07/2023 18:36

A silky shirt, tailored trousers and flat shoes is my go-to.

I like this sort of simplistic look best. It reminds me of Shiv from Succession and her lovely work wardrobe. I also like a nicely tailored smart skirt.

Of course. I think a tailored suit jacket can look a bit old fashioned too.

cherrypied · 22/07/2023 19:50

I'd verge on conservatism for and that would be black elasticated midi skirt or high waisted tailoired tapered trousers and a top tucked, maybe striped of muted floral something smartish and modest.

Maybe a jacket/ blazer with flat loafers and a smart leather bag and a coordinating smart belt.

The skirt and trouser styles are the ones that suit me the most (well suit my cake full belly the most) with a tucked in top

I think the dress are lovely but too busy for work wear.

noglow · 22/07/2023 19:54

The second one might work with a jacket.

Hawkins0001 · 22/07/2023 19:55

One on FBI left is quite nice.
That said you could wear a pink dress or suit?

Thiswayorthatway · 22/07/2023 19:55

Dress 2 with a suit jacket and smart shoes.

Yes that's what I'm thinking
