Pigmentation

neverwakeasleepingbaby · 21/07/2023 15:57

At some point in the last 3 years I've developed patches of pigmentation across my forehead. I think it looks worse because it's sort of in between my natural creases/wrinkles so augments them and makes me look older (I think).

Possibly could be melasma but I don't remember developing it specifically during pregnancy (although I do have a 2 year old and am pregnant again). It seemed to appear the summer that he was 1.

Because I'm pregnant I don't want to use anything now, but what's the best way of tackling this after I give birth/stop breast feeding? I'm willing to chuck a bit of money at it.

Is the best thing to see a dermatologist for some kind of advice and/or treatment? Or is the stuff off the Dermatica website best? Thanks

How about getting it lasered off ? I’m tempted to do this with age spots.

MagicClawHasNoChildren · 21/07/2023 16:31

I have no answer but I'm interested, as I also developed hyperpigmentation about a year after the birth of my older daughter.

It did actually recede during my second pregnancy, but another year of breastfeeding down and it's back!

MagicClawHasNoChildren · 21/07/2023 16:32

So I'm following with interest, I should have said!

HeartshapedFox · 21/07/2023 16:46

I had similar after my second pregnancy, and found it comes and goes - it’s always worse in the summer (despite using a high spf daily) but then disappears in winter.
Last year and this year I’ve switched to the Nivea anti-dark spot moisturiser (the one advertised by Louise Redknap) which actually seems to work and has kept it at bay. Nothing at all so far this year.
I guess what I’m saying is that you might not need expensive treatments if you find the right moisturiser!

@HeartshapedFox that's so interesting that a moisturiser has helped. Sounds like a cheaper option than dermatologists etc.

Tbh I'm not very good at skincare and I should probably get more of a "regime" especially as I head towards 40.

I've seen good things about vitamin C serums as well. The internet is a bit mixed on results with chemical peels, laser treatment etc. Not sure what to try first really! But the moisturiser seems like a good inexpensive first option. Thanks!

Dermatica - hydroquinone or azaelic acid

MySoCalledWife · 21/07/2023 19:25

I started getting this mid firties

got it 90% under control by using ordinary stuff like vitamin C serum and vit C cream, and spf50 every day without fail

Leafytrees · 21/07/2023 19:42

I've really struggled with melasma patches since having my second dd. I've worn horrible SPF 50 and hats for 4 years but it kept getting worse. I found a Dermatica link on here, have been using it for nearly 2 months and have seen huge changes so I'd say it's definitely worth a go.

If you'd like to try it cheaply then feel free to use my code: Try personalised skincare for just £2.90, plus £10 off your next month-

Head to www.dermatica.co.uk and checkout with code KR04VL
https://www.dermatica.co.uk/referrer/KR04VL

I saw big changes in he first month so even if you only spend 3 quid trying it I think it will help.

Prescription Skincare

Dermatica provides online prescription treatments for ageing skin, hyperpigmentation, acne, acne scars, rosacea and melasma. Visible results in 8 weeks.

Vitamin c and skin & me/Dermatica prescription helped but I've had laser on stubborn pigmentation.

I'm booking in again after the summer as notice small patches have returned. I'm sure I can have a dozen extra freckles every time I hang out the washing even with spf 50

Oceanus · 21/07/2023 22:25

See a dermatologist. A peeling might fix it in one go or a prescribed cream over time. I don't have melasma but a few sun spots and it's what I'm considering after summer. Your dermatologist might say Tretinoin would fix it which is basically like Retinol but much much stronger. NB: You can't use it while pregnant!

ArianaGrande · 21/07/2023 22:27

Dermatica!

totally sorted my Melasma out and the only thing that worked after spending a fortune on creams.

Don’t bother with peels and lasers, lasers can make it worse.

Dr Natalia Spierings is worth following on IG if you are on it.

Skin&Me supposed to be good, similar to Dermatica.

Cotswoldmama · 21/07/2023 23:02

Skin+me is great I've been using them for over 2 years. You take a photo of your skin and tell them your skin concerns and they prescribe something personalised for you. Some treatments aren't suitable whilst your pregnant like Tretinoin so it might be better to wait but they might offer alternatives. You can use my link to get your first and 5 month for free just £3.50p&p. Ive found the customer service great and you can pause your subscription or change the delivery date really easily.

I have some patches of pigmentation too, and last year I went to see a skincare expert. It cost £70 for an hour consultation and a detailed report. I would recommend something similar.
