Do some people just look shit with light coloured hair? I do!

Original natural colour was v dark brunette. Irish complexion so pale/cool-toned and freckly with blue eyes.

Am now naturally salt and pepper and grew it out for a few years. Wasn't for me so have bleached and dyed it multiple different colours while trying to find a way to manage the roots.

I've realised that I need significant contrast between my skin and my hair. With any shade of blonde or pastel pink hair it just blends into my face and I look like a potato.

However too dark is impossible to maintain with whites popping through less than a week after dyeing with permanent dye and can look unnatural.

Sat here with a level 7 rose gold blonde dye over the v faded pastel pink. No idea how it will turn out but I need to find the darkest colour that suits me but that lets me blend the greys.

GAH!

I've seen pics of Ariana Grande with her blonde hair recently for the film Wicked and it isn't flattering at all compared to her previous darker hair which was gorgeous. I think some people just need that contrast whereas lots of other fellow pale people look fantastic with light hair.

Please don't tell me the solution is to go grey again. To each their own and it looks fab on some but it is definitely not for me.

@ashtyler what a fabulous result! Where do you source the henna and indigo? I've used the Lush ones before but what a faff that solid block is....

I get the powder from Amazon.
It’s relatively easy to use.
Mix the henna powder with water in a non metallic bowl, leave for 10-24 hours. Add indigo powder and 1 tsp of salt 20 mins before applying. I get my other half to do it for me as I’ve got a degenerative joint disorder.
Wrap in cling film, leave 2-4 hours depending on the result you want and how porous your hair is. Rinse out.
Don’t shampoo for 48 hours while the colour deepens.
It’s more work than box dye but my hair has definitely been healthier and shinier since.

Sometimes you can ‘borrow’ colours from your sister palettes so I’m a deep/dark winter but can get away with some of the deep autumn greens and blues as long as there’s very little yellow in them.

Irish here and I use Superdrug toners to add some red to my hair, it does the job perfectly. Gives my skin some colour as well, naturally I’m as almost as dark as indigo lady upthread which means hiding whites is horrendous - and mine really are white white white.

@ashtyler your hair looked incredible. How long does it last! I might try this x

@ashtyler your hair is gorgeous 🤩

Before and after (in wrong order 🤦🏻‍♀️). Am very happy with it. On closer inspection it hasn't covered my grey roots underneath but it's not visible and the parting is surprisingly well blended for a semi.

My ends are frazzled with bleach damage but I'm going to trim as it grows and avoid bleach going forward if possible.

Have taken the kettlewell quiz before more tha once, always come out a winter.
