Paging curly types going grey...

Has anyone used a genuinely life-changing (OK...hair-changing) product on their greying curly hair, something that's really made a difference?

My hair isn't full grey but it has a lot now, and it's really affected the texture. I find it seems to get build-up very easily, even though I only use one styling product - Frizz Ease mousse. My style also never lasts and it frizzes very easily, particularly in the damp.

I have very sensitive skin, hence I stick to Frizz Ease mousse ever though it's not great for my hair because it doesn't seem to aggravate my skin, but I'm after any recommendations for genuinely effective products, ideally a gently clarifying shampoo and a curl cream/mousse/foam with reasonable hold (not flax gel - that didn't work for me!)

I generally avoid coconut oil in hair products as I think that's an irritant for me.

I tried CG a few times years ago and it never really worked for me, so I'm not super enthusiastic to try it again now!

My hair doesn’t have much grey yet, a smattering slowly increasing, but on my fine curls Hershesons everything cream and/or Zoosh (spelling might be incorrect) mousse work really well.
This is the only mousse I have found that doesn’t irritate my eyes.

I have white grey, curly frizzy hair and have spent years trying to find a good combination.
I can’t use any coconut products either, not because of any irritation but my hair just can’t cope with extra protein.
Currently I am using Faith in Nature shampoo and conditioner, Shea and Argan variety, the Dragon Fruit is good too. The only product I use is Cantu Curl Custard, I also wear a sleep bonnet which helps enormously to reduce the overnight frizz

Thanks both! I haven't had much luck with Faith in Nature. I do wear a silk bonnet and I agree that helps. I'll look into Hershesons and Zoosh!

Mine is naturally wavy but don't wear it curly all the time.

The key to not being frizzy, for me, is a good serum, I use the John Frieda orange one. Then Shockwaves mousse if I'm having it curly.

My daughter has much curlier hair and likes the Curly Ellie products.

I use Tresemme Pro collection coconut and aloe vera shampoo and conditioner.

Catspyjamas17 · 18/07/2023 16:14

Faith in Nature stuff smelt lovely but felt really cheap and awful on my hair. The conditioner didn't do anything. It reminded me of terrible cheapo Superdrug products in the 1990s.

SoShallINever · 18/07/2023 21:41

Faith in nature makes my hair feel like it's been washed with washing up liquid (I remember this well from being a child in the 70's).
I use the Aussie range now and leave the conditioner on overnight (under a hair wrap).

I like AsIAm coconut co-wash and boots curl creme. They seem fine on the grey and the brown bits. But I can’t make the grey curl as much as the rest!

Olaplex number 6. I get mine from my salon. I have curly/wavy hair (whether it's curly or wavy depends on its mood!) . Your hair sounds very similar to mine. Mine is also greying and I have also noticed changes in texture. I've found I need to wash it more often (about every other day) to keep it fresh. Olaplex smooths the waves/curls but doesn't weigh it down. The condition has improved no end since using it.

I like Umberto Giannini curl styling cream and gel. The gel is really important in dealing with the frizz.
Aveeno do a good clarifying shampoo.

I'm half grey with highlights and I use New Wash from Hairstory and their Hair Balm styling moisturiser and nothing else. I air dry or gently diffuse. It's been an absolute game changer for me, my hair feels healthy, curls defined with no frizz, colour lasts ages and it feels like there's no product in it. I can really tell the difference when I go to the hairdresser and it gets shampooed, can't wait to get back to my own stuff. The drawback is that it's bloody expensive, but my hair is so much better that I keep paying it. It can take a couple of weeks for your hair to adjust once you switch, but it's worth it. I know I sound like an advert, but I promise I'm not an employee! (wish I was, I might get a discount 😆)

Cookerhood · 19/07/2023 10:05

Does Frizzease still have silicones in it? I know it used to, & if so you will get build up on your hair.
I use Cantu curl activator & Umberto Giannini curly gel. Use much more than you think you need. If I'm feeling flush I use Trepadora products which are brilliant but £££

Belmondo · 19/07/2023 10:05

Thanks everyone, much appreciated!

@WhineWhineWhineWINE I've looked at Hair Story before but as you say, the price put me off...I'm willing to pay if it works but with the amount I've spent on useless hair products over the years I'm always sceptical! I do like the idea of one wash product and one styling product though. Do you find the Hair Balm gives enough hold to your curls?

Ahh I just looked up the ingredients of New Wash and it has myroxylon Pereira/balsam of Peru, which I'm allergic to, so at least I save myself some money there 🤣

It has so many essential oils! That must put a few people off.

WhineWhineWhineWINE · 19/07/2023 10:16

Oh that's a shame! It's it's been great for me and worth the cost, but no good if you're allergic of course.

APurpleSquirrel · 19/07/2023 10:18

I have curly hair which has a fair amount of greys now. I'm still trying to find my right combination of products, currently trying & liking Camille Rose ones:

www.camillerose.com/

Got them in Sainsbury's & the ones I've tried don't have coconut oil as my hair doesn't like it either. So far so good.
I believe it's stocked in Boots, Superdrug etc.

PaperBlinds · 19/07/2023 21:59

Prob not great products but i use aussie shampoo, cantu leave-in conditioner, cantu curl activator, then gel. All after shower, while hair is still wet.

Hair is streaked with white/grey about 40% now and white is less curly, but it's soft and pretty shiny and not frizzy or wiry feeling (for the first time in about 30 years!)
