Is this skirt a bad shout for a lazy person?

I've been looking for a skirt like this for a long time but it's 100% linen and I'm worried it will get really creased really easily and end up looking like a rag. It's quite expensive and made in Europe though, maybe if the linen is better quality it won't crease as much?
What do you reckon?

Yes it will definitely crease.
It will still look good (like linen) - wear it with a smoother top if you're worried you'll be entirely creased!
Linen looks good when the things either side are smart ish.
Go for it! So comfy. I have a long linen dress and I wear it with everything, wooly jumper over the top even, and boots.

Linen creases when you so much as look at it. But a skirt like that won’t be so noticeable because it’s floaty.

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 16/07/2023 09:11

Don't know about that skirt, but this reasonably similar one can be hot washed when necessary and judging by other stuff I have from the range will last forever.
BUT
It needs ironing, when damp, whilst armed with a spray bottle. Or you could send it out to be ironed.

Layercake Linen Wrap Skirt

Long and easy, a Layercake Skirt is a great base to start a layered outfit, whether it is a Smock or Tabard or that fab jumper you've recently added to your wardrobe. When we started to wear these ourselves we found an excuse to wear them every day, in...

@Itisyourturntowashthebath
Wow I love that one thanks for sharing!

Realistically I know myself, and I know I'm not going to be ironing it 🙈

It does say it can be machine washed at 30, what would happen if I took it out the machine and hung it straight up to dry?

Failing that I guess I could outsource my ironing which feels like a massive luxury but why not?

I didn't realise that linen could crease and still look good though @Helpwhatwouldyoudonext

I don’t think it does look good! See a lot of older woman invert creased Linen that’s been ironed well.

Why not look for a better quality jersey material?

AnnaMagnani · 16/07/2023 09:39

Linen always creases. That skirt is creased on the model.

If you don't like that look, I'd avoid linen altogether.

pictoosh · 16/07/2023 09:42

I'm extremely lazy and would wear that skirt for precisely the reason that it doesn't need to be ironed. I'd be embracing the vibe and matching it with messy hair and big boots. It's not an item for a polished look. Neither am I.

Can you tell more about your experience with this make, @Itisyourturntowashthebath ? I hadn't heard of them before and am now looking at their dresses with interest!

Finlesswonder · 16/07/2023 09:58

Thanks all! I do have messy hair and wear big boots so maybe this is the perfect skirt for me 🤣

I've just never worn linen before so wasn't sure whether this would end up creased as in "it is creased" or creased as in "what the hell is that???!"

Threenow · 16/07/2023 09:59

It will crease, linen always does. I wear a lot of linen however and I don't care about the creasing, it's part of the appeal. I iron it when it is first washed, but otherwise just wear it as it comes out of the wardrobe.

SurpriseSparDay · 16/07/2023 10:05

Where’s it from, @Finlesswonder ? I prefer a yours to the Slow Wardrobe skirt, it looks less bulky.

But yes, it should be perfectly fine crumpled or I crumpled.

ditalini · 16/07/2023 10:58

Linen generally looks like shit straight out of the washing machine.

I agree that you should absolutely embrace the crease when wearing, but no, imo it is not a fabric you can shake out when wet and hang. It needs ironing when damp.

NatashaDancing · 16/07/2023 11:56

OP where are you buying that skirt from? There is a lot of very cheap linen on Etsy and the like. It photographs well but is likely to be poor quality when you get it. It also might look as if it's from the UK or Europe but it's actually from China

Linen always creases. Doesn't matter how cheap or how expensive. There's no way on earth you can wash a linen and not iron it.

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 16/07/2023 11:58

@sonjadog I have two linen dresses, one wool tunic and a pair of linen baggies. All fabric pre-washed, no shrinking or twisting - even after a decade.

One linen dress is made of unusually thick linen, it is a pig to iron - do it straight out of the machine is best, they don't seem to have this fabric in stock at the moment. It is bramble proof and very rugged.

Next linen dress is made from a finer thread but tight wove denim material, much easier to iron and does not get too creased, just a light crumple when being worn.

Wool tunic, just shove in a wool wash, shake and ironing is optional.

Linen baggies, lighter and looser weave but still heavier than most linen on the high street. Crack well before hanging out. Smooth well, screw up and crack again - they have a slight seersucker / crumpled look as opposed to creased. They'd probably tumble nicely.

You can do controlled creasing of linen by rolling it into a bundle from one side and then twisting it. Lots of little vertical creases are formed. It takes practice and a few repeats to get it looking right and only works with light to mid weight fabric.

sonjadog · 16/07/2023 12:59

@Itisyourturntowashthebath Thank you! That is very helpful. I am looking at a wool dress now for the winter. It is expensive, so I'll have to think about it for a while, but I have bookmarked the page to return to. 😊

CindersAgain · 16/07/2023 13:03

I think there is a difference between the creases of ‘once was ironed but has been worn a bit and got creased’ and ‘not ironed’. I only iron when absolutely necessary and I have to say linen is absolutely necessary in my opinion. It doesn’t need ironing after every wear though, if you are slightly careful with it.

Badbudgeter · 16/07/2023 13:09

I think linen irons best when properly wet straight out of the machine. Then lay it out flat to dry. I normally just put it flat on the bed on a towel. I love the idea of deliberate creases though!

MmePoppySeedDefage · 16/07/2023 13:12

Really good quality linen doesn't crease a lot, and when it does it looks good: the cheaper type can crease awfully and then look baggy.

For the PP who asked where that skirt is from, which I'd also like to know, these are similar:

Notcontent · 16/07/2023 13:15

I think linen benefits from a quick iron after washing but then still looks good even when creased. I love linen.

ignore the comment above implying it’s for older women and doesn’t look good! 🤣

I bought a linen dress from Italy last year and it did not crease that badly after wearing - all linen is not equal.
