Bikini wax - am I asking for the wrong thing?

OiCatThatsMySeat · 16/07/2023 07:48

I always ask for a high bikini wax - not interested in a Brazilian or anything like that. I just want no visible hair when wearing a swimsuit. But they ALWAYS leave hair underneath. It's not really obvious but it is there and I feel annoyed, having gone through the indignity of a bikini wax, to be left with a small strip of hair on either side of my pants and towards my bum.

Help me out, seasoned waxers. What am I meant to be asking for? (Or do I just need to find a new salon?!)

Last time I worr my bikini bottoms in and asked for all visible hair removed!

I wonder if the issue is the beautician's own lack of hair - I had a spontaneous bikini wax when having my armpits done. She did the sides like I wanted then asked about underneath. I'm not hairy there so it hadn't even occurred to me. If I were your beautician I wouldn't have known that needed doing!!!

She’s a beautician - she would have done many waxes and therefore seen many amounts of hair.

I definitely don't want a Hollywood. I want everything off OUTSIDE my knicker line. But the rest left on.

Just say this 🤷🏻‍♀️

I always wear v brief disposable pants that they provide. All the hair that needs taking is visible. And also it's easy to access the hair by moving the pants.

puffylovett · 16/07/2023 09:25

I know what you mean OP. I also get hair travelling down my inner thighs from the underneath! I would fully expect this to be done with a high bikini wax. However, I haven’t had a salon wax in donkeys years so things may have changed!

mumof1or2 · 16/07/2023 09:32

If you read this it does say that all other waxes, including a French wax, DON'T include hair removal from below. So if you want the hair below removed it looks like you need to ask for this specific type of Brazilian which still leaves you with some hair up top - not just a landing strip.

I said, I booked a high bikini wax because I want everything off outside the knicker line, and she said oh yes, tbh I always do a high bikini wax as standard.

So I thought, great, we are on the same page.

But I'm left with hair sticking out of my pants underneath so I'm wondering if a high bikini wax is not in fact the type of waxing I should be booking in future.

Clearly not the right think to ask for then. Next time say 'Can you do what you did last time, all off outside my knickers time but also underneath as there was still hair sticking out here' then point to it.

But OP does want some hair removed from below. She wants a strip all the way down to the bottom.

Peridot1 · 16/07/2023 10:19

I usually just book a “bikini wax”. No other terminology. I wear my regular pants just pulled out of the way. They always do all the way around/under.

DatsunCogs · 16/07/2023 10:39

I would call this a French bikini wax, which to me is what would show if you were wearing a thong. So most of the hair round your bottom if you have it, most round the sides and I have a strip off the top taken off, so if I am wearing a very low cut bikini nothing shows. So not as extreme as a landing strip! But more than just the obvious sides

mumof1or2 · 16/07/2023 11:00

@TimesRwo that's my point! She's asking for the wrong thing as it's only a Brazilian that involves hair removal down below.

No, a high bikini wax includes hair from down below - the question is how much hair / how narrow is the strip.

mumof1or2 · 16/07/2023 11:23

@TimesRwo I'm referring specifically to an article someone posted, and I took a screen grab from it. That article says the only bikini wax that removes hair from below is a Brazilian one. Very weird that you're so determined to argue about this, but I'm just quoting from an article.

mumof1or2 · 16/07/2023 11:24

@TimesRwo plus the OP had a high Bikini wax and they didn't remove any hair from below - that's the whole point of her post!

madeinmanc · 16/07/2023 11:26

I agree with your point @Janek , I didn't have hair there until I was older. I didn't even know about it until it happened!

Talking about it is being determined to argue about it? That interpretation of an exchange is even more weird…

I kind of realised that as I was typing it. Maybe she is, in fact, very inexperienced though!

KirstyL91 · 16/07/2023 11:32

Ex beauty therapist here and seasoned waxer! A high bikini wax should definitely be removing all hair from outside the panty line. She hasn't done her job properly! Even a standard bikini wax should be doing the same! A high bikini wax basically means taking more hair inwards of the top area so essentially a narrower triangle left at the top. A Brazilian takes off everything only leaving a very small strip or triangle at the top and a Hollywood removes everything.

Thank you KirstyL - this is what I thought

And as mentioned by someone above, the differing amounts of hair thing could be it, even though you'd think they'd seen it all before. I always feel embarrassed- yes I know it's crazy - about the sheer amount of body hair I have, when standing next to a perfectly groomed beautician. Ridiculous hangover from some mean comments when I was a teenager!

Anyway, thanks all, I think I will go somewhere else next time(prepped with what to ask for!) as I think it is a mixture of my own communication and this beautician not being all that great.

OP, let us know how you get on with your "new" salon. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Find the right beautician and stick with her.

madeinmanc · 16/07/2023 12:11

I mean, waxing the underneath part is a lot more intimate, isn't it? Maybe not all beauty therapists want to "go there" (literally and metaphorically).

StarlightLady · 16/07/2023 12:14

@madeinmanc - They perform lots of Hollywood waxes and do it all the time, it's part of the job. They really have seen it all. And no more intimate than a dental hygienist getting bits of old food out from between your teeth.

CashmereDarling · 16/07/2023 12:18

I've had Hollywood waxes which apparently didn't include bum cheeks, so I've learned to be very specific about that!

I get that it's awkward when it's a new place and you're feeling vulnerable about baring your nethers but a quick chat about what's included and what you actually want is vital.
