Cabin suitcase

Looking for recommendations for a sturdy cabin size suitcase please...

I travel a fair amount for work (in the uk) and go abroad 3/4 times a year. I shouldn't think I would put it in the hold but you never know!

I have had two Tripp suitcases within a year that broke. So not that brand.

I prefer 4 wheeled cases and a bright colour is a bonus!

Happy to pay a bit more for proper quality.

Thanks

I treated myself to an Antler cabin case when I started travelling for work again. It was slightly too big for the bag allowance on my last flight so it had to go in the hold. I was a bit concerned how it would fare but there wasn’t a single mark on it afterwards. Mine is a bright blue but they also do a lovely ochre colour.

If you're going to use it regularly go with either Samsonite or Delsey. Delsey's my favourite, it can through hell and it'll still come out the other side in one piece. Samsonite does colour better though tbh.
I have a Rimowa that lacks "balance" when I expand it. When it's standing it'll fall forward without notice, regardless of how things are stored inside, which is a pain because I need to keep a hand on it or it might fall over someone (as it did the first time it happened and obviously it happened at the airport while waiting for a flight so instead of being able to keep myself entertained I had to babysit my suitcase before realising it just lacked balance when upright and it wasn't even that full tbh).

Forgot to add: have a look at TK Maxx, that's where I got all of mine.

Between us we have 2 Delsey and 2 Antlers. All good. The Antlers are slightly bigger and DD thinks one is to big for Ryanair so she took one of the Delseys in recent holiday. We rarely fly ryanair (they are fine for easyjet and BA) so worth checking sizes for the main airlines you fly with before you buy.

On the subject of luggage, can anyone recommend a good case that fits under seats. I want something as large as possible within the size limits. Delsey have a nice one which is fine for BA but too big for easyjet. For easyjet it needs to be 45x36x20 or less. I travel a reasonable amount for work so was looking for something quite smart. I have seen lots online but none that particularly stood out. Ideally with wheels and a handle but appreciate that reduces inside storage space.

Ryanair is smaller again (40x25x20) but dont travel with them enough to be bothered about getting something that fits that - have a small holdall i could use if necessary.

I travel long haul monthly and have been using Away for the past five years. I have one medium and one cabin size suitcase, and then a cabin bag and it works for all types of destinations.

@WhyOhWine I think you need to decide what you value the most. If you want it to have wheels it'll likely have to go in the overhead bin as wheels are usually for rigid suitcases and stewards won't let you keep those next to you even if they fit. If you want something that fits under the seat you're looking at something more maleable so your body will end up feeling the "weight" a bit more from carrying it. Where does your heart lie?

WhyOhWine · 12/07/2023 15:43

basically i want the convenience/ease of wheels without the risk of having to check my bag into the hold. It is the one thing a get anxiety about - waiting for my case to appear on the carousel. My teen DC have said they are not travelling with me again if i have hold baggage!
I appreciate on some airlines you can guarantee the larger size cabin bag by paying for it, which is fine, but i can maximise my hand luggage then by having a decent size under seat bag - meaning i can potentially manage without a hold bag even on longer trips.

But it sounds like what i want is not possible.

You can definitely find luggage with wheels and small enough that you don't have to check it in but the thing is once you're on board it can't stored next to your feet under the seat even it fits, due to safety reasons. People will come and say it's possible, well yes, but only if the flight attendants haven't noticed, so you're essentially relying on luck. If there isn't any space above, I've seen those bags taken to the front of the plane and then they're put away safely and returned at the end of the flight.
If you want it next to you, where you can grab something to eat or pick up a coat/book, etc, whenever you want to, then you need something like a backpack or a duffle bag.
If wheels are the most important thing Samsonite and Delsey is what I'd get, if you travel a bit and want something that'll last and that you can take into any shop for it be fixed if needs be. I know somebody who has an American Tourister and they're happy but I can't vouch for it myself tbh.

Only Samsonite- hard shell.
Expensive but worth every penny, and it always looks good.

Sorry for hogging your thread OP 🙁 That was for @WhyOhWine!

The more the merrier - the luggage struggle is real!

Thanks for the suggestions, off to have a look. I love the Away one so far.

Another vote for Away. I've had mine for nearly 10 years and it's brilliant. Really well designed and still looks smart.
