Anyone given up make up?

I’ve always been someone who wears makeup but over the last few years I’ve worn less and less but recently I’ve become so annoyed with how long it takes me to get ready in the mornings! I really want to give up wearing makeup, but I feel slightly uncomfortable without any on! I get the odd spot and I have the usual pores and slight scars from spots but nothing horrific. Has anyone given up make up? Or at least foundation??

I very occasionally wear mascara on a night out, and I paint my toenails sometimes, but thats it. I moisturise with a hefty SPF and I do like a facial, it makes a difference at my age. I stopped bothering with decorative makeup after observing what most women my age looked like with make up on.

I stopped during lockdown and never went back. I still take a makeup bag away with me on holiday etc but always find I just don't put it on.

I didn't start wearing makeup until my mid 20s really and never had a proper "routine" or developed and particular skills in applying it so I think it was quite easy to slip out of the habit.

I probably would look "better" with some on, but I'm just kind of failing to give a shit nowadays.

I look a bit ill without make up. A little makes a huge difference to me and just gives me an extra bit of polish and sparkle so I'll keep wearing it. I wouldn't ever wear a foundation though, only the lightest skin tint. If you think foundation is caking, sitting on the surface or you can feel it, you are using the wrong product.

I've gradually slipped into never wearing foundation over the last few years.

It started to look weird on me... pale and cakey. Probably means I needed to change foundations, but I realised I actually like to see my skin instead (I'm lucky and have pretty good skin).

I still wear mascara and sometimes lipstick. Also a dab of powder when my nose looks too shiny.

I think my face looks fresher without foundation. Of course other people may not be thinking the same! But nobody has fainted in horror yet at the sight of my naked skin.

I gave up about ten years ago, I got fed up of mascara smudges below my eyes from my oily skin.

It took a few weeks to get used to my face in the mirror without the black lines around my eyes but that soon went away and I never think of it now. My lips and skin are better for it.

I have started having kobido face lift massages regularly and look ten years younger or less droopy at least. I recommend that if you want to treat yourself.

I loved my Mothers 1960s make-up and used to wear similar. But I look better, more interesting and more me without it especially if I take good care of my skin. I work in a very male team and I feel a bit clown-like with it on compared to them. I really dislike the drag style and Kardashian make-up with highlighter under the eyebrows. It feels more like a mask than make-up - what's it hiding-anybody could look like that, it's all the same!?
Summer is a great time to dump make-up especially foundation.

I’m 67, and haven’t worn make up since I was about 14! Ghastly stuff - ridiculously expensive, completely unnecessary and far too time consuming. Who wants to waste 15 minutes every morning of their life, clogging their skin with chemicals?

Happinessischeeseontoast · 11/07/2023 23:23

I no longer wear foundation but can't adjust to not wearing mascara without feeling 'rough'.

I'm focussing on skincare at the moment and usually ok with it when I'm at home but if I go to the toilets at work I feel my complexion is very grey and wonder if I should wear foundation again. But then the 40odd year old people I know who wear full makeup, it looks really cakey and not a great alternative either. I don't think I'm good enough at applying to avoid that.

AussieKoala01 · 11/07/2023 23:24

I used to feel that I wasn't able to leave the house without a full face of makeup on, but now makeup has become something I wear on a very rare occasion. (Just when I feel like it now)

I think developing a good skin care routine has helped with my confidence.

TitInATrance · 11/07/2023 23:29

Never liked it much; I gave it up completely and threw it all away during Covid, when .I was 60 - I only ever wore it out socialising, never at work or shopping. Just tinted lip balm now.

I still go out and get dressed up to do so. Get plenty of attention - I don’t think men my age like the ‘made up’ look, they’ve been married and know what bare skin looks like.

user1471464218 · 11/07/2023 23:35

I don't wear much make up now that my skin looks ok. Previously I felt I needed foundation to stop me looking sick and pale.

But I can't imagine giving up bras! I really think I look better (thinner and bigger boobs) with a bra on.

ThreadExterminator · 11/07/2023 23:42

I've never worn much but did always put on at least a light coverage of tinted moisturiser. I just can't be bothered now and I also feel indignant about expectation that women need to alter their appearance to be acceptable.

All of my friends with no exception look nicer without make up than with. We're all the sort of people not to wear thick layers of the stuff anyway but I've really started to notice that when my friends do special make up for a night out it's like putting a veil over their natural beauty.

Pigeon31 · 12/07/2023 07:04

I fell out of the habit during lockdown - also I realised that having a backlight behind the screen made my skin look so much better for video calls than foundation did.

Roselilly36 · 12/07/2023 07:24

I used to wear make up everyday, since lockdown hardly ever now. And if
I do much less makeup than I used to wear.

Jigslaw · 12/07/2023 07:26

I wear a lot less day to day, if its hot I don't wear any otherwise just usually a primer, light foundation, eyebrow pencil and mascara.

CheersToMe · 12/07/2023 07:36

Never wore much and only bother occasionally now, and even then it's a just a decent tinted moisturiser and brown mascara.

Malariahilaria · 12/07/2023 08:08

I tried going make up free in the first lock down but found slobbing around in tracksuit bottoms with no make up make me feel dreadful so I went back to wearing it and dressing slightly more smartly.

I use 7 items and it takes 5 mins. I really like how much better I feel when I have it on, plus buying a new lipstick cheers me up and is cheaper than clothes or shoes.

Shoss · 12/07/2023 09:07

I also fell out of the habit during lockdown and mask wearing.

I'm late 50s and never used to leave the house without foundation, nude lipstick and a smokey eye. It seemed pointless though when alone in the house, and even more so when out and about after a mask had rubbed the foundation off my cheeks.

Having got out of the habit I don't seem to be able to get back into it. I have some beautiful makeup which I replace as it ages, but the effort of putting it on and taking it off doesn't seem worth it any more.

bryceQ · 12/07/2023 09:13

I stopped mostly a few years ago, I wear Spf and a cc cream but that's it. I wanted to feel content with my face and not see my face as "unfinished"

Occasionally now I do wear it and I enjoy it but I'm always happy to take it off and feel most like myself with no make up on.

I'm early 30s

Wildlyboring · 12/07/2023 09:17

I used to wear makeup every day but to be honest I spend more time on skincare these days and most of the time I go barefaced. I do tint my brows and lashes though and use a drop of facial tanning drops in my moisturiser which helps. I will also use NARS Tinted moisturiser and some concealer if I feel a bit pasty.

I find I enjoy putting make up on when I do go to the effort now as it doesn't feel like a daily grind if that makes sense?
