Quality plus size clothes

Hello.

I’m short (5’3), size 22 and apple shaped. I’m working on dealing with an eating disorder so instead of trying to lose weight and force my body into a better shape/size I’m hoping to focus on making the best out of the body I have!

Most of my clothes come from supermarkets and Evans. The quality is fairly poor (bobbles, fade etc) on much of it and I’m keen to buy better. Maybe buy a capsule wardrobe that is comfortable (comfy shoes only!) but makes me feel put together. I’m willing to put some money into it.

So I’m wondering you you all know of quality clothing stores/brands that go up to a size 22. Many don’t!

thanks!

Anthropologie - and I second Gudrun Sjoden but it is a definite style.

MontagueLeo · 09/07/2023 22:06

Fat face, Boden, White Stuff, SeaSalt, Marks and Spencer’s…

OldTinHat · 09/07/2023 22:07

I've bought some fab stuff from plus size Tiktok shops.

PinkFootstool · 09/07/2023 22:07

Supermarkets are fab - Tu, George etc. Primark. Monsoon. Next. H&M. New Look. M&S.

All go up to and often above a 22 these days. (I'm a 22-24).

I'm mostly living in M&S linen trousers and Next vest tops right now. I've also bought several pairs of trousers and jeans on Vinted.

Evans is atrocious quality and designed for who knows what body shape, but definitely not mine!

GetYourHandsOffMyCake · 09/07/2023 22:09

Simply Be
Dorothy Perkins
Yours Clothing

I'm also size 22, 5ft 2 and apple-shaped

Whiskeyinthejaroh · 09/07/2023 22:10

Seasalt, white stuff, m&s, monki, cotton traders, next sometimes (if it's cotton/linen)

Akiddleetivy2woodenchu · 09/07/2023 22:12

Marina Rinaldi. Ralph Lauren do a plus range. Also Beige, if you are in London. Monsoon also good and M & S Autograph. White Stuff and Seasalt for casual clothes. Also Lands End.

Same size but tall so unsure re: brands.

But I would think about what colours suit you best, what you want the clothes for, what sort of clothes you like and feel most comfortable in (do you prefer dresses, trousers, skirts etc), what are your priorities, have you any suitable clothes in your wardrobe that you would be able to keep and then go from there.

Maybe book a session with a John Lewis personal shopper first to give you some inspiration. If your main thing is two pairs of comfortable work trousers, or dress you can dress up or down in a plain colour or some going out to the pub clothes say that. They may get it wrong on the first attempt and if you give them honest feedback that is too old fashioned for my taste, that is too short, too frilly, too expensive, I really like that colour but not the style etc then they can build on that.

Once you have some ideas you can shop around. Try TKMAX and other shops. Or you can maybe pick up some better quality things on Vinted once you know what you are looking for.

@Ginola2345 the problem with a JL personal shopper as a plus size person is the absolute dearth of plus size clothing in the shop.....

DisappearingHelen · 10/07/2023 06:31

Thank you all so much for taking the time to reply.

Many of these I’ve bought from when I was slimmer and wasn’t aware they went up to my size and many others I’ve not heard of. I’m going to have fun trying to figure out a comfortable but stylish new look or two.

Ulla Popken...if you sift through the frumpy styles the quality is really good for basic tops, t shirts etc and things like coats etc I get in their sale.

CountryCousin · 10/07/2023 06:57

Just to reiterate the suggestion above for Marina Rinaldi. Not all if it might be to your taste, but it does specialise in plus size clothing, rather than just ‘sizing up’. This is very wearable.

Have a look at Karen Millen and Phase Eight sale items. Both do size 22.

Wishing you well with the ED recovery x

KirstenBlest · 10/07/2023 09:26

Seasalt and Ulla Popken

Plomplom · 10/07/2023 09:43

Rixo does quite a lot of dresses in extended sizing - pricey but very nice for occasionwear.

QuestionableMouse · 10/07/2023 09:46

Not the most trendy but I really like Lands' End.

Vinted can be worth a look too if you have time to sift through.

Actually as a 6ft tall size 22 woman I had some success with a personal shopper in a large branch of John Lewis about two years ago with a couple of nice tops the personal shopper picked out in a size 22 one was in the sale (but admittedly things might have changed as we don’t have a branch locally). I also found two other tops in the sale in the same range from Live Unlimited (which goes way beyond a size 22 and the sizes are generous).

They had a couple of nice dresses but unfortunately they were a strange length too short for the style on me and cut me off at a strange place emphasising my tummy but these may work well on someone smaller in height.

TheCyclingGorilla · 10/07/2023 11:20

Phase 8 do a plus sized brand, ideal for occasions like weddings.

Cider Clothing does a plus sized range too which might suit.

24Dogcuddler · 10/07/2023 14:13

Roman
Wallis
Live Unlimited ( often on offer at John Lewis)
Scarlett and Jo
River Island
Zalando ( range of brands)
In the Style
Taking Shape
Joe Browns plus

Happy shopping
Think Yours have just introduced a plus size petite range. These often stop at 18!

purser25 · 10/07/2023 14:51

Might not be your cup of tea but I am a real apple feel good and look good in Popsy. Global Mandela are cheap but nice prints.

HelloSunshine11 · 10/07/2023 16:58

I'm the same size, height and shape as you. I'm making the most of the trend for oversized clothes at the moment, and have recently had really nice, swingy tshirts from Uniqlo, and some really good stuff from Kin at John Lewis. Can sometimes find things that work in Cos too (eg a cocoon dress). The sizing at Kin is absolutely batshit so they need to be tried on - my favourite top from there is a small, which I absolutely am not. Ditto Cos - I ended up with a medium in the cocoon dress as it was so oversized. Also had some lovely dresses from Monki this year. With dresses I just have to be careful where the waist hits because that's my biggest point. I also love the Harper jeans from M&S, stretchy and comfortable but flattering as the leg is quite fitted without being skinny.

https://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/product/cotton-striped-french-sleeved-t-shirt-458963COL00SMA005000.html - XL is a bit big for me in this.

https://www.monki.com/en_gbp/clothing/dresses/midi-dresses/product.midi-flounce-dress-black.1085459001.html - sadly mostly sold out now but this has been really flattering, and I've had a couple a similar shape from asda. Have lived in them this summer.

Cotton Striped French Sleeved T-Shirt | UNIQLO UK

Comfy oversized cut. Fold up the sleeves to style it your own way.<br>- Comfortable 100% cotton. <br>- Ribbed neck line. <br>- Generous cut. <br>- A more stylish take on the T-shirt. <br>- Looks great with the sleeves rolled up. <br>- Non-cling design....
