I really like this dress but in the real world...

What do you do with the neckline to make it decent for eg work? Would a camisole under it ruin it?

As I tell my students, no wearing your shirt buttoned and rolling down your skirt does not make you look "frumpy" and we need to move away from telling women that covering up is somehow less desirable.

If you prefer the neckline without the popper, go with a cami but it's not "frumpy" to use the popper.

Can you tell I'm on a one woman crusade to change the way we talk about women's fashion?!

Ok...

I can't wear my shirt buttoned all the way up. Do you have a problem with that?

Wait, never mind. Of course as soon as I posted that I found what you meant!

FWIW they're called 'modesty panels', and I wish I'd known about them sooner!

I was about the post a link- then saw your update. I googled 'partial cami' and lots came up. 'Modesty panel' gives me images of a sanitary pad sitting there to cover the cleavage! 😂

Hmm, yes you're right there's a popper. Doesn't it look a bit frumpy with the popper done up...changes the look completely, although obviously I can't have it both ways 😆

It doesn't look "frumpy" fastened.

It's a smartish, work style dress. It looks a bit daft unfastened - as if the model hasn't put it on properly.

Er. You've misunderstood me completely. Wear your clothes however you like and in whatever way you want. What I took issue with is calling a higher neckline "frumpy". I hear the word and similar being used to argue that women/girls should endeavour to show as much skin as possible to be as attractive as possible and it's toxic.

llareggub · 09/07/2023 22:46

On principle I am refusing to even consider something called a “modesty panel”

buy the dress, it’s lovely.

Greengrassoh · 09/07/2023 23:00

it’s not frumpy because she’s more covered up. It’s frumpy because she looks fatter.

Mirabai · 09/07/2023 23:10

Like I said it’s the print that’s frumpy (and also the cut - it doesn’t fit well).

If you slash a dress to the navel and show your tits it won’t look frumpy but you may not want to go out like that.

landahoyss · 09/07/2023 23:11

It's a bit dowdy.

Oh good! Phew! Sorry. Yes, I have completely misunderstood you.

I've had a lot of people get funny about me wearing certain stuff because I'm quite big chested but I've got a really small waist so shirts aren't generally tailored for that, so you can see boobs when I wear one unless it's too big. I thought you were saying it wasn't right to have your shirt unbuttoned too low and I was thinking well I have to.

Sorry again for getting defensive and making assumptions. I had my button pop open only last night in a shirt and I got a few filthy looks.

I do actually agree with you. I like a nice high neck actually. I like a long skirt too. It's not frumpy.

Oh that's alright then.

🙄🙄🙄🙄

fat =|* *= frumpy

I'm sorry...what the actual fuck?

ThisIsACoolUserName · 10/07/2023 06:50

That's so gorgeous and just my style for work. I'm buying this dress! Thanks OP

"Frumpy" is completely meaningless- beyond "I don't like this dress but I can't be bothered explaining why (and I get to feel a bit superior because I'm not frumpy)

Catspyjamas17 · 10/07/2023 08:46

It was more saying the model "looks fatter". I don't know where to start with that TBH.

FabFitFifties · 10/07/2023 10:11

What about the slit down the back? Does that not bother you at work?Does it show the bra strap? The front is fine done up - wouldn't look right open with a cami - too much cami. I like it though.

SmartiesParty · 10/07/2023 10:12

This is the popper on the dress.
I just bought it but am going to return it. The one thing I would say is that despite it being viscose not polyester the fabric doesn't feel that nice

I really like this dress but in the real world...
SmartiesParty · 10/07/2023 10:15

Oh and just to add even with the popper it's still very booby on me (don't want to post a pic of just my boobs though!)

peachgreen · 10/07/2023 11:57

I don’t like it with the popper done up either, it ruins the line of the dress. I suspect it would only work on smaller breasted women who can wear it undone. A black silk cami might work I suppose.

78Summer · 10/07/2023 13:22

I have a modesty panel for similar dresses which attaches to my bra. You can buy them easily online.
