Lab grown diamond engagement ring

Can anyone recommend somewhere they have personally used to purchase lab grown diamond jewellery please?

There appear to me a number of online retailers and it’s hard to choose. I’d prefer to buy one in person but there don’t seem to be as many options

Apologies for hijacking this thread but I've always wondered why either lab-grown or new mining of diamonds is even necessary - over the centuries there must have been so many diamonds mined, given their value where on earth do they all go? I've never heard of anyone buying second hand diamonds but this must be a thing, surely? Am I being thick?

Common use of sizeable diamonds for everyone is extremely recent. Fevers launched a big campaign around 1950 that promoted the 'diamonds are forever' idea.

Check out local auction houses. Some even hold specific jewellery/ silver/ collectables sales.

Another vote for The Diamond Store.

Mine is from a company called Clean Origin - I have the wedding band too. Can’t recommend them enough!

When buying diamonds, lab grown or otherwise, you are always best to not go online, to actually go into a shop. You can not tell the true quality of a diamond online, you need to see it. I'm a jeweller, we won't buy any of our diamonds online, we have to be able to see them first before choosing.

Also if you buy online you won't have the after sales care that you need for resizing, checking settings are secure etc.

Find yourself a local independent jeweller and go and choose something.

our local jewellers don’t sell lab grown diamonds or moissanite, unfortunately...

and I unfortunately feel incredibly iffy about mined diamonds. Were a bit stuck, I suppose :(

Darrell, I have always loved the thought of what a very old piece of jewellery went through and the story it could tell

ginsparkles · 02/02/2024 07:51

@PumpkinsAndCoconuts what makes you feel iffy about them? All diamonds in the uk (and 98% of countries) have to be mined in accordance with the Kimberly process.

If you feel genuinely iffy about them, what about a second hand piece ? The diamonds in those will have already been mined and it's the most sustainable way. Just be mindful that the claws etc will probably need work on them much earlier than a new one, ask to look at the setting using a loupe so you know whether you have large troubles heading your way.

Also ask your local jeweller, they may not be actively promoting lab grown in their window, but they might be able to source them.

I used to be quite familiar with the international trade of gold, potential supply chain issues etc.

I do not have the same familiarity with the diamond industry but my first hand knowledge with supply chains and the certification processes of industries (an other example being fish farming) made me cautious and a bit cynical, I suppose. Aka “iffy”

I do like the idea of a second hand piece! I’ve considered that as well.

Also ask your local jeweller, they may not be actively promoting lab grown in their window, but they might be able to source them. I definitely will. Good idea, thanks!

@FlyingPi speaking with experience from the industry, of course many diamonds (like gold) are recycled, reused. Our whole company was founded on the fact that so many people inherit diamond jewellery but want new settings for the diamonds because the settings go out of fashion.
Only recently have people started explicitly labelling gold as ‘recycled gold’ - almost all gold is recycled!! Think about it, no one ever throws gold or diamonds away in the bin, do they?

I’m not a fan of lab grown diamonds but am always going to be biased since so many generations of my family have worked in the industry. But factually speaking they are indistinguishable from natural diamonds. Buyers really ought to be aware though that the prices/value of them are dropping very swiftly, precisely because there’s no control over how many are produced and the market is flooded. Some people who paid lets say, £2000 for one a few years ago could now buy the same stone for £500. Natural diamonds do hold their value better.

boopboopbidoop · 02/02/2024 11:46

@edgeware de beers have already seen the writing on the walls. They have been releasing their stockpile to the market.

Lab grown will have an impact on the prices of all diamonds. They have value based on rarity factor. They aren't actually that rare. With a market full of graded lab grown and the stockpile of earth grown being released, the whole market is affected.

Why are they still so expensive if they're fake?
