Does anyone find cheap clothes often fit better on them?

Somehow my favourite items always turn out to be cheap and not great quality, but somehow fit my body better. Admittedly I am an odd shape at the moment; slim but with a big menopausal belly. My favourite dress right now is a Dotty Perkins cheapie with a shirred waist, and my favourite white shirt is John Lewis. And today I find that a cheap Regatta jumpsuit fits me better than the Hush jumpsuit and several other more expensive ones I ordered.

Sorry to be brutal, but the prices you’re suggesting are simply too low for you to easily find well cut, natural fibre clothes new and not on sale. Really you’d need to double the amount you’re prepared to spend per item. Or look for pre-worn or sale clothing. (Which is easy enough to do.)

I've noticed that some of my friends haven't got large all over, but some have become very busty. They aren't curvy as they tend not to have put on much weight around the middle, and the bum seems to have flattened.

Legs shrink as you get older, but 'petite' proportions won't necessarily work.

Maybe there could be threads or blogs for different shapes, with where to get clothes that were suitable.

I borrowed a Trinny & Susannah book on 'dressing for your shape', but I was none of the shapes.

@BansheeofInisherin , you're best bet is to find out which retailers' clothes suit you and try to get them pre-loved or in a sale or in somewhere like T.K Maxx or an 'outlet' shop.

M&S cheap jeans (£15) fit the standard British bottom, including mine.

Yes, I could have written this - I always find that cheap clothes fit me better. I’m a petite apple shaped post menopausal size 6 and like body skimming/tighter fitting clothes or else I look swamped. I find that higher price ranges do way too much vanity sizing and I dislike swathes of fabrics and really dislike linings - they just add bulk.

I had a John Lewis voucher recently and tried loads on from Kin, And/Or, Hush and I just looked like a clown and probably around 5 years older. There was nothing in JL that made me look good. Ended up buying fragrance 😂

@SurpriseSparDay not brutal at all, but I usually make sure to buy on sale. Looking at some nice Cos trousers right now for under £80. PLEATED LINEN TROUSERS - Dark navy - COS

You are right though that clothes prices have gone up, and I probably need to spend more. I have lost and kept off a stone in the last six months, and am hoping to lose this tummy eventually- again a girl can dream!- so don't want to spend too much right now though.

I always found that more expensive dresses (Hobbs, phase8, jaeger etc, not designer) could never fit my slightly above average boobs. I was a size 8 with 32D boobs back when I thought expensive was better but the dresses felt like they were always made for a B cup.

BansheeofInisherin · 06/07/2023 20:09

Phase 8 was my go to when I worked in an office. Now I WFH and can't justify nice dresses as most days I just end up in my jogging clothes.
