We are guests at a Catholic confirmation this week. We are not Christian. How formal should we dress? Should dh extract his suit from the mothballs? (If it even fits!)

Unless you know the family really well and can ask, I'd err on the side of formality. Yes, definitely suit-sorry!

Smart casual is perfectly acceptable. Pants and shirt for men, women wear knee length or longer dresses/skirts or dressy jumpsuits. Teenaged and young boys wear smart jeans and shirt, girls generally wear dresses or skirts. Head covering is unnecessary. I would advise to cover shoulders and nothing too low cut.

Yes, it’s Sunday best type clothing

He'd be fine in a shirt and trousers. I was singing choir st the parish confirmations last week, it was really hot. Mens attire wasn't the smartest and women wearing nice summer dresses or jumpsuits but nothing too formal.

So less formal than a wedding, on par with christening.

I've been to several and men generally wore suits but if very hot smart trousers and shirt and tie and women wear dresses or skirts and tops. Just nothing too short or low neck and cover your shoulders.

Any colours to avoid?

No, it’s a celebratory event,

Aparecium · 03/07/2023 16:57

Thanks 😊

I would agree with those who suggest in line with a christening.

Aparecium · 03/07/2023 17:31

I've never been to a Christening, either!

I'm Irish Catholic and your DH does not need to wear a suit. Something clean and smart is the norm. Chinos and a shirt or even a nice t-shirt is fine. No colours need to be avoided. My DH didn't wear a suit to our DDs Confirmation, can't say I noticed other Dad's wearing suits either.
