Is it normal for hair colour to fade so fast?

I had my hair done at the hairdressers, not sure what you'd call this but it she did streaks throughout then a plummy base with magenta colour on the streaks to give it some contrast.

The top colour was quite bright but seemed to wash put quite fast and 2 weeks later looks dull.

For context I have a scalp condition so need to wash my hair every 2 days, 3 is pushing it and use a special shampoo on the scalp although I try to use a colour preserving shampoo and conditioner on the ends.

Feel a bit peeved as paid a lot of money but the colour has washed out quite fast. Is this normal and if I put a semi perm colour on myself ( can't afford to go back to the salon) will this be OK?

I think it varies from person to person. It really doesn’t last on me at all. I actually got quite brave in lockdown and used box dyes on myself. I’ve kept it up as much cheaper.

BluebellBlueballs · 02/07/2023 17:32

I'm thinking now she's put the streaks in, I can just box dye it with a semi and it will still show up the contrast on the bleached bits?
She said not to do anything myself in between salon sessions but it's my hair and my money and I expected a £120 colour ( Inc cut) to last beyond 2 weeks.

Any hairdressers around who can advise?

Your shampoo is most likely stripping the colour! Also unnatural colours like your describing magenta/plum never ladt long.

Saltovinegar · 02/07/2023 22:01

I agree with FlutteryButterfly.

Red shades always wash out quickly. I have red streaks and a brown base colour and despite using a shampoo specifically for dyed hair it's like a murder scene every time I wash my hair.

Experience has shown me that you need a decent shampoo and a lot of conditioner. I buy my hair products from my hair dresser (Matrix) and the colour definitely lasts longer.

If you need to wash your hair so often I think you need to look at a different colour option sadly.

Mine does this too, it's infuriating

Isitthathardtobekind · 02/07/2023 22:04

Mine does this too! I get blondes and they always fade out - usually it’s the toner that gives the nice colour, then it’s gone in a week or 2! Also wash my hair every 2 days as I feel like it can’t go longer.

BluebellBlueballs · 02/07/2023 22:09

I bought one of those semi permanent bottles of colour that wash out in 15 washes and it has restored the brightness and contrast.

Can anyone tell me if I can keep doing these say every 6 weeks or so as they fade out or will that bugger up my hair.

Now I have the bleached streaks in, I don't intend to go back to the salon until they grow well out which will take ages. So I'm happy to keep doing home jobbys.

Depends on the condition of your hair. Imagine your hair as a brick wall, the cement is what holds it together - you don’t have that then the wall/colour will collapse/fade.

Especially bright colours. My silver lasted one wash. Your colour sounds vibrant so it’s gonna fade fast. Maybe look at Shrine drops.

Try Wella fresh masks they condition your hair as well as colouring it - you can get them on Amazon.

Hi, I have dyed red/copper hair with highlights.
Mine washes out quickly, i top it up with conditioning deposit only colour like Bleach London or Manic Panic, or Crazy Colour.
It doesn’t damage the hair as it hasn’t got peroxide or anything in, just pigment.
I do mine once a month or more and have for the last two years.
There are loads to choose from in Boots/Superdrug or on Amazon.

I’m brunette and dye my hair with blue/black permanent. It lasts 3 weeks if I’m lucky before it's back to my original colour.

Bright colours can fade really quickly make sure you are using a gentle shampoo and never use am anti dandruff shampoo as that strips colour

What about my scalp psoriasis then

The scalp shampoo you are using will be a factor.

I have excema and many shampoos flare it up, so I have to be careful what I use. I had coloured my hair, just darker colour, nothing extreme, and used Kerastase calming shampoo after a flare up. When I dried my hair, it was at least 3 shades lighter. 2nd wash a few days after, colour was completely stripped. I was so pissed off, that shampoo costs a fortune as well.

So i either have nice coloured hair, or a itch free scalp. There seems to be no middle ground there.

Sigh.

I have the same problem. What are the best shampoos for holding the colour?

User9753224 · 03/07/2023 06:36

My hairdresser told me that the best way to hold on to my colour was to always wear a hat in the sun as even an afternoon outside can lighten it one shade !

Jbrown76 · 03/07/2023 06:50

L'Oréal elvive colour project
