Help me with some good lasting brands of clothes

So I’m 35 and currently wear clothes from H&M, new look, topshop, peacocks etc but I’m looking for some recommendations of good clothes brands for my age that will last. Planning to look on Vinted but no idea what brands to look up. My style is very much skinny jeans converse and a band tee/blazer kinda combo but open to suggestions!

(I was going to be That Poster - and point out that adults’ clothes don’t come with age tags, so you don’t have to look for clothes ‘for your age’. But I’ve never been on Vinted - is that how they group items?)

For good quality, (long lasting), pre-owned in the sort of style you like, you could look for:

American Vintage
& Daughter
Community Clothing
Eat Dust Clothing
Goodhood Store (although that carries a variety of brands.)
Hades
I and Me
Margaret Howell
Marques Almeida
MSGM
Nigel Cabourn (men’s stuff as well as the rarer women’s clothes).
Old Town
Studio Nicholson
YMC

I have things from some of these stores that Refuse To Die and have been worn regularly for years. Particularly a cotton broderie anglaise blouse from MSGM, ridiculously well made and still looks as good as new after about seven years. Vests and t shirts from Margaret Howell. Knitwear from Studio Nicholson …

@WhatWillIWear I'm not intentionally trying to antagonise but the price points in your suggestions are very high. I googled Margaret Howell and the clothes are gorgeous but not very affordable.

Gladtoblasto · 30/06/2023 18:26

I'm so sorry you have said pre-owned. My apologies.

BunnySneezes · 30/06/2023 18:30

I have some things from People Tree that I've had for 10 years and still look great. Also vintage Monsoon and Gap on second hand sites - not so much their recent stuff which doesn't last as well. Look for the old fashioned labels.

PrincessofWellies · 30/06/2023 18:31

Toast, Cos, and anything out of 100% cotton, wool or silk. So some John Lewis items, Seasalt, Ralph Lauren. The problem is clothes do date, but you can wear 20 year old stuff if you're prepared to put a bit of effort into accessorising and getting a tailor or seamstress to remodel a bit. I find Trinny quite good with this stuff, she's good at repurposing and tailoring stuff to keep it modern and relevant.

Yup. Grin It does make a difference!

Divebar2021 · 30/06/2023 19:28

There’s a sweet spot between affordability and quality and for me it’s around Arket & Cos.

Looking at Margaret Howell on eBay has reminded me of Olive Clothing, are they any good? I appreciate a lot cheaper!

FinallyHere · 30/06/2023 23:14

Hush-uk, wrap London and poetry fashion all good for me.

Duke4 · 30/06/2023 23:25

Have a look at The Kooples. I buy many of the suggestions on EBay. The Kooples might fit with the style you describe; they’re a French brand with a chic rock twist

I have a lovely cotton dress from closet London (pre-owned). Their stuff is made in the UK and my dress is great quality cotton.

Finisterre clothes are well made and long lasting IME. Outdoorsy but not full on technical hiking gear.

NotNowFGS · 01/07/2023 10:33

Second Finisterre.

Not sure if you're asking about Margaret Howell or Olive but if it's Margaret Howell, well all I can say is that I own a few things and that the trousers look as sharp at the end of the day as they do when I put them on, that I once accidentally washed a linen shirt of theirs on 90 degrees and it came out just fine, that it never seems to wear out. I wish it were cheaper too - I only buy it second hand - but I understand why it costs so much.

WhatWillIWear · 01/07/2023 11:45

I had a look at Olive Clothing, prompted by your post, @PictureConsequences. Much of the stuff looked beautifully designed (as far as one can tell from a screen) but you could see where they’d compromised on fabric and relative meanness in proportions to keep the prices low. If one avoided the synthetics it might provide a very nice wardrobe - but a bit too doll-like for my tastes.

Ilovepugs2017 · 01/07/2023 15:59

Is fat face any good? Some of their stuff looks ok

Think you're right, ah well!

PictureConsequences · 01/07/2023 19:57

And sorry Flo, wasn't clear, I meant Olive. But I'm now looking at MH.

Most of the stuff I have from FatFace has lasted quite well, definately better than H&M and New Look in my experience. Obviously they are not in the same league as some of the other brands discussed above but I have dresses from FatFace that I wore for 10 years before having a baby and not fitting them anymore.

grannycake · 03/07/2023 12:53

Baukjen have been good for me

uncomfortablydumb53 · 03/07/2023 13:01

Older fat face items are much better quality than new so I'd say that's a good shout
Also joules( cotton thicker than it is now)
