Has anyone used a uva parasol (umbrella type of thing !) in really hot weather.....

And have they been useful ...or just annoying?

I have an occasion to go to mid July and weather is saying the silly heat is going to be around by then !

Posh occasion...and I can't fit a big floppy hat in my head ..plus they make me hotter !!

Possibly lots of standing around.. so just wanted my own shade !

Any thoughts?
Thanks .

Ive often thought about it as I hate the heat but I cant stand umbrellas in the rain, let alone when its not raining!

I think umbrella's are anti social to be honest.

Hummm 🤔🤔🤔
But I am an anti social person 🤭🤭😂😂!!

It is not a wedding so I don't have to mingle.

In fact I will be just stood by my self !

This'll give me away to anyone who knew me then but when I was a midday supervisor back in the day and had to stand out in the playground for an hour in the hottest sun I used a UVA umbrella. The kids were fascinated by it and kept asking why I had an umbrella when it wasn't raining. So much so that I wrote 'this is a sunshade' all over it! It was the best thing I owned during that time. And yes it's great to hide under 😉

ModerationInEverything · 28/06/2023 21:07

I am like you. The sun on my head makes me feel awful. I have a big head so cheap, nice sun hats are few and far between. I've often fancied a parasol and you might have just tipped me into buying one. Off to the South of France in a couple of weeks.
Basically I can't see a down side. Found any nice ones?

Bennyjoon · 28/06/2023 21:08

I’ve bought one but haven’t had occasional to use it yet. I’m planning on using it on the beach or in the garden.

ANewAdventure · 28/06/2023 21:09

I’ve used one in south east Asia before, great things.

Bennyjoon · 28/06/2023 21:09

I bought mine from Solbari (Australian company but postage was cheap).

People that hold up umbrellas and parasols, dont your arms ache?

Im with you OP, I am also anti social! I suppose if you're just standing around and not in a position to have someones eye out that is different.

What about if you need to hold something or pick something up, you've only got one hand then?

Chersfrozenface · 28/06/2023 21:11

I've been inspired to get a cheap one online. If it works, great. If it doesn't, I won't have wasted too much money.

toucaninjapan · 29/06/2023 01:15

I live in Japan and I use my sun-blocking parasol all the time just like the locals. No, my arms don't hurt at all and it's a lifesaver.
In the past couple of years I've seen an increased number of men to use parasols too, and apparently there are some new models with a misting fan that are really popular with men. I think you are supposed to put 1 litre of water in it before going out, so I guess this type of parasol could potentially feel too heavy if you are holding it up for too long

thebabessavedme · 29/06/2023 08:51

I don't live anywhere exotic but I noticed quite a few women with now, always asian and always have lovely skin. so I guess they work.

Sillyfred · 29/06/2023 08:53

Loads of people had these at a festival I've just been to. And also a sports event too.

I decided to get one. Its a sensible idea

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/06/2023 08:56

I have a vintage Liberty one,it's beautiful 😍

Kirsty Alsop is a great fan of parasols.

Mercurial123 · 29/06/2023 09:26

I always use one when I'm on holiday in Bangkok, Vietnam or Hong Kong.

ilovecherries · 29/06/2023 10:34

I believed I was always careful with my skin. Factor 50 300 days of the year, always a sun hat. Over the last two years I had one squamous cell carcinoma and 6 basal cell ones removed from my face. One required a skin graft. Also had about another 20 areas that had to be treated with a chemotherapy cream which was worse than the surgical removal. So UVA parasol all the way now, on top of all the other protective stuff. I find them much easier to use than an umbrella, which I can’t stand. I think because you aren’t trying to avoid driving rain and manage them in high winds. Plus you aren’t wearing nearly so many other clothes at the same time. I put it down if I’m walking in a really busy area just so others aren’t dodging me, but I use it a lot.

helpfulperson · 29/06/2023 10:37

I've got a solbari one I use hiking. I rarely use it on the move but it's great when stopped for both sun and rain protection

bizzey · 29/06/2023 11:03

Oh thank you everyone for replying .

I think I will get one !

Snoopysimaginaryfriend · 29/06/2023 11:05

I haven’t got one but I’m awaiting postage of my solbari sleeves and hand covers as I developed the most awful eczema all over my forearms and hands last year which the doctor now thinks was polymorphic light eruption. I’m pale and wear spf50 all the bloody time, I am diligent and never burn, but apparently the only thing that prevents this a physical barrier. Thank god I don’t get it on my face/neck/chest.
I did see a couple of people with umbrellas at sports day, whilst I was standing under a tree with a sun hat, and I have seen some people out and about so I think it’s becoming more common.

How are umbrellas anti social?

Do you bond with people better if you're all wet?

mast0650 · 29/06/2023 11:10

I've used umberellas on holiday to give shade in really hot places like Malaysia. Particularly when walking around cities, sightseeing etc where you cannot avoid the sun. Bit of a life saver at times. Not so sure I'd want to use one at an event in the UK. But I wouldn't rule it out - would take one with me and use if there was really no shade and I was desperate. Parasols were once really widely used and you see them used a lot by some Asians. Sensible really.

Justkoko · 25/07/2023 13:41

Did you find a uv umbrella? Can anyone recommend? Solbari look nice but not cheap! I'd like one that can pack down to go in a handbag.
