Henna hair dye

Can anyone recommend a good dark brown henna? I'm switching to henna to try and avoid more damage to my hair so I can grow it longer. I tried dying my grey with a dark brown but it seems really light, almost yellowy. I left it on for 4 hours too wrapped in cling film and a warm towel. If this doesn't work I'm contemplating growing out the grey!

Brown henna is henna mixed with indigo. For it to take on grey/white hair you need to dye it with natural (red) henna first and then re-dye with the 'brown' henna; there's likely to be a chestnut tint to the end result.

So do you mean dye with pure henna and then dye with pure indigo?

No, indigo alone won't do anything - it needs a carrier. Dye with pure henna and then re-dye with henna/indigo mix. Also make sure it's had time to start oxidising before applying - make it up 24 hours in advance.

Oh blimey. OK thanks for the tips. I'll give it another go.

Holland and Barratt have Pure henna in different shades, including dark brown. So you don't need to do Indigo over it.

The brown shade is from indigo added to the product, as it will be with the one the OP is using. Natural henna only comes in red.
