Thinning menopause hair

Hi everyone, since a total hysterectomy (I have HRT) I’ve noticed that my hair is thinning and I can see far too much scalp for my liking!
has anyone else had this problem and are there any recommendations for shampoo/conditioners that may help reduce breakage or encourage hair growth?

Dilute Rosemary oil is meant to help

mortgagequandary · 28/06/2023 17:28

Sorry .. diluted that was meant to say

I've been using it on mine for about six months and it's definitely helped, I'm shedding less hair and there's regrowth

Good luck. Hair loss is awful x

DollyTheFluffyOne · 28/06/2023 17:29

Nioxin definitely helped me.

HundredMilesAnHour · 28/06/2023 17:31

The Kerastase Genesis range is very good for preventing / reducing breakage. (I'm in peri and having the same issue). I use the shampoo and conditioner plus the serum at night before I go to bed and the difference is visible! Unfortunately it isn't cheap. It was recommended to me by my hairdresser (British Hairdresser of the Year several times) who doesn't usually recommend or endorse products (this is the only time in 25+ years of knowing them).

My scalp was dry and it was falling out at the roots. I started eating a bit better and got shampoo from the GP and cocoisis (not sure that’s spelled right) and it’s all a good bit better now.

Ohh brilliant, some great suggestions here, thank you
I'm happy paying for premium stuff if it works

I've started using Regaine foam and after just a few weeks, I can see a lot of new growth. So much that if I pull my hair back, I look like a baby hedgehog with all the new shorter hair sticking up.

The shampoo ?

theDudesmummy · 28/06/2023 22:59

I use Nioxin serum. I think it is helping

Also Caffeine shampoo. Actually it is super nice even if it is not really helpful for thinning

Ooh I've been considering this too ..is it the plantur one ?

theDudesmummy · 29/06/2023 09:34

The caffeine shampoo I use is a German one called Alpecin. I also like the way it smells, it's kind of medicinal.

Theunamedcat · 29/06/2023 09:43

Rosemary oil the nature's spell one is good the one with black caster oil in too is meant to be even better pop it on massage it in and leave overnight wash off the next morning

If your hair is greasy maybe use the Rosemary water? but that can darken your hair so it's not really for blonds

Has anyone used Champo? It keeps popping up on my FB/IG feeds, almost as if my phone camera is covertly feeding the internet evidence of my thinning locks...

DustyLee123 · 29/06/2023 09:45

I’ve seen Regaine recommended, and apparently you can use it on eyebrows too.

And I’ve read that men and women’s is the same, but women’s costs more. Not sure if it’s true ?

It certainly used to be true, not sure if it still is. The challenge with Regaine is that if you stop using it, the regrowth stops. I tried it for a while but got fed up of applying it. I got lots of baby hairs but they would eventually break off as Regaine doesn't help with breakage. I find Kerastase Genesis serum much better as it gets the baby hairs growing but also really helps reduce breakage so the baby hairs turn into proper hairs rather than just breaking off as I had with Regaine.

So I guess it depends on your individual circumstances re why your hair is thinning / breaking off.

I did also use Redken Extreme shampoo and conditioner and that helped strengthen my hair but Kerastase Genesis shampoo and conditioner seems to be better at strengthening but also moisturising my hair. (I knew the Kerastase was supposed to be better but it's so expensive so tried Redken first as it was cheaper....seems my hair has expensive tastes grr).

I lost hair about 12 years ago, I don’t know why, GP just said to take iron 🙄
is it possible to regrow it ?

Yes. I fell for the marketing as it was chasing me round Facebook. I bought a trial kit with mini bottles, which was still extortionate. It was rubbish. Don’t buy it. My hair felt dry and it was all fluffy and unmanageable - just cheap crap in expensive looking bottles.

I was looking for all sorts to improve hair thinning at the time too. Turned out I had low vitamin D levels so I take supplement now.

DollyTheFluffyOne · 29/06/2023 10:16

I really like the Champo serum and it does work as I had hairline issues. I'm not keen though on the shampoo as it makes my hair feel crap when wet.

That's really helpful about Champo, thank you! I too have been tempted by the marketing.

DustyLee123 · 29/06/2023 10:18

I didn’t like Alpecin, I didn’t like the feel of my hair.

MujeresLibres · 29/06/2023 10:33

As a previous poster mentioned, please get vitamin D and iron/ferritin levels checked as these are very common in mid-life and can cause hair loss. Underactive thyroid too.

Corgilicious · 29/06/2023 10:37

Ah, thanks! The Champo marketing team are definitely working hard - it's following me around so much that I half-expect someone to pop up behind me in the bathroom mirror waving a bottle of the serum.
