Red for a wedding?

I've got a wedding in a few weeks. Boyfriend's friends, so I don't know many people. I've got this crimson ruched Norma Kamali dress I want to wear with a cream blazer and sparkly shoes and earrings. Too much? I know bright red can be iffy for a wedding...

Tbf, my boyfriend is the celebrant in a tiger print cape, so it's not a totally traditional wedding...
Currently 50/50... I'll see if there are any more opinions! I don't think the dress is comparable to that black extreme cutout one, ha

Traditionally a tiger print cape would be considered "iffy" attire for a wedding, it doesn't sound like you need to spend too much time working out if a red dress is going to offend.

Theblacksheepandme · 27/06/2023 19:48

I think it's a lovely dress and suitable for a wedding.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 27/06/2023 19:52

Dress is gorgeous. Definitely wear it.

JeminaSunshine · 27/06/2023 20:00

I don't like red and think that's more of an out out outfit but maybe the blazer will make it look less look at me

UncleRadley · 27/06/2023 20:10

It's lovely and will look so classy with a blazer. Absolutely fine for a wedding. Nobody really pays much attention unless you're in a white lace gown!

PollyIndia · 27/06/2023 20:19

This is the blazer I was looking at…

I’m small so will be quite oversized on me, so my thought was it would balance out the red. I mainly wanted to wear it as it was an impulse buy I’ve only worn once and I’m trying to feel less regretful about the purchase!

You can't get your baps out in a church but if the ceremony is not in a church then that would be fine in my opinion 🤷‍♀️

FeelingwearyFeeelingsmall · 27/06/2023 20:36

I'd never heard that about red meaning you slept with the groom!

I'm going to a family wedding next month and was planning on wearing a ballet length fifties style red dress over big net petticoats. I hope nobody thinks that means I slept with my nephew

i will check the dress with the bride just in case - but as she is wearing a paisley dress cut to show off her tattoos with custom painted Dr Ms I don't think she will be too concerned about tradition.

Whendoesmydietstart · 27/06/2023 20:39

I love the dress, but I also think its an "I snagged the groom". Like you said though, it's none traditional so you should be fine.

I wanted to like this post but this isn’t Instagram so I can’t. But your outfit sounds great.
to the poster who said about getting your baps out, I mean this dress really doesn’t show cleavage, so that’s not an issue. Also ‘baps’…

I really don’t think anyone will be thinking I am trying to shag the groom!!

OP posts:
NatashaDancing · 27/06/2023 21:17

The "baps" comment is just awful. And not even accurate.

Noseylittlemoo · 27/06/2023 21:20

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g you missed off your list that if it's in a church you must have your shoulders/arms/legs/ cleavage fully covered.

So a long sleeve polo neck beige sack should be OK.....
But what do I know? The last 2 weddings I've been to I've worn a short, sleeveless bright pink playsuit, and a bright pink strapless knee length dress!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/06/2023 23:04

This should do it.

I know a lot of people don't ascribe meaning to outfit colours in wedding guests, but a lot still do, and red means 'I slept with the groom.'

Bright red is also a bit 'look at me' when it is one day for the bride to be the center of attention.

I've never heard this, I wore red to my brother's wedding 2 years ago! I've definitely never slept with him 😂

Kayemm · 27/06/2023 23:19

Topictwenty · 27/06/2023 18:10

I just don’t get the colour thing at weddings. If anyone actually thinks red means you’ve slept with the groom, they should give themselves a long hard talking too, it’s complete and utter nonsense

I never knew about the colours thing!

The only time I wore red to a wedding I had actually slept with the groom. I was the bride though!

What facinator and pashmina would match that?

Black: you disapprove of the wedding and are treating it as a funeral.

White: trying to upstage the bride.

Red: you want attention and/or you slept with the groom. Wearing red out of spite/want him to change his mind.

Shit. I wore red for my stepson’s wedding. I wondered what all the whispering and sniggering was about.

It will be fine with a blazer over it @PollyIndia.

Theblacksheepandme · 28/06/2023 08:06

I was at a wedding last year and the Mother of the groom wore a red dress and she looked fabulous.

Theblacksheepandme · 28/06/2023 08:12

Crikey OP, if red means you've slept with the groom. What the hell does leopard print mean?

thedevilinablackdress · 28/06/2023 08:15

This stuff drives me insane! It seems the only "allowed" option is a nice dress, not too short, not too long. Dress up , but not too much - don't draw attention to yourself! (The Toast dress posted by PP would be out on not dressy enough grounds. I do like it tho...) Pastel colours, but don't match the bridesmaids. Gaaah.
I remember my DM and friends going to weddings in the 80s in something nice they already owned and felt good in. No big drama. Maybe a new blouse to go with that lovely silk skirt suit.
I'm only so annoyed because I've found myself caught up in the nonsense myself.
(Wear the dress OP)

But what a load of nonsense. No one chooses the colour of their clothes to send a message to everyone around them. Anyone who believes in this is batshit

Of course, linking to that Toast dress has ensured that I am seeing endless ads for overpriced mud-coloured sacks from Toast now. Ho hum.
