Opinions please! Is this dress too 'bridesmaidy' to wear to a wedding as a guest?

Would be most grateful for some quickie opinions...

Do you think this dress is too bridesmaidy to wear to a wedding as a guest?

I love the dress & I'm thinking of getting it in lilac, but I am very aware that this sort of style is quite popular for bridesmaids to wear at the moment. Do you think it is appropriate for a guest?

dress is gorgeous. So long as the colour of the bridesmaids is not lilac, you should be ok. imo

pukkapatch · 22/02/2008 17:51

taht is gorgeous. absolutely gorgeous. so what if its bridesmaidy? get it!

CarGirl · 22/02/2008 17:53

just make sure you have some sort of jacket/covering and no flowers and you should be fine - I would also see if you can find out the the bridesmaid dress colour just in case!

pointydog · 22/02/2008 18:09

depends if the bridesmaids a re wearing lilac satin. If not, should be ok

scotlass · 22/02/2008 18:14

I love dresses from coast they're fab quality and you can normally get away with changing accessories and wearing over again.

I echo the others as long as the bridal party isn't in lilac I think you're fine. Perhaps your accessorising (i.e shrug, wrap, bag, shoes etc will also make it look less bridesmaidy.

Lovely, lovely!

MrsBadger · 22/02/2008 19:05

satin as a wedding guest is risky imo, but it is a nice shape

get a big hat, bridesmaids certainly won't be wearing those

EffiePerine · 22/02/2008 19:08

yes

JackanoryGirl · 22/02/2008 20:25

Thanks everyone. Really appreciate your opinions.

Still not sure what to do though!

I think I would be alright if I knew that the real bridesmaids were not going to be in lilac, but I haven't a clue what the colour scheme for the wedding is.

I love the dress so much. Would be not to get to wear it, but I think it would be awful if the wedding colours were lilac.

Maybe MrsB is right and it's the satin that's the problem.

I wore this dress to a wedding in January but it was midnight blue/grape colour (from Coast). So long as the bridesmaids aren't in a similar colour I would go for it. Made me feel really good and so long as you don't over accessorise you will be fine.

LaDiDaDi · 22/02/2008 20:32

I think it is.

I spent a whole day this week trawling the shops for a dress to wear for a wedding and I had this problem a lot, too many frocks were this heavy satin which does just make me think "Bridesmaid".

mazzystar · 22/02/2008 20:38

it is lovely

but i think strapless and satin is an issue for a wedding. went to one last year and there were a few women in light- coloured strapless dresses [bridesmaids were in red] but it just looked a bit weird.

PearTart · 22/02/2008 21:58

I think it's a risk, but you could accessorise with a patent black belt and vintage black lace shrug etc or something else to set it aside from bridesmaid dyed-to-match shoes and matching-silk-flowers combo.
It does depend on the feel of the wedding- is it an evening do? Are the family very traditional or a bit more modern? And are rest of the friends generally glam or a bit serious?

pukkapatch · 23/02/2008 12:54

i was once told that you should always try and upstage the bride by how fabulous you look.
bridesmaids are fair game i think. though not brides, obviously

BoysOnToast · 23/02/2008 21:28

sorry, but i do think its v bridesmaidy.
and i dont much like it either... but you do, so i think you should go with it. like the idea of accessorising with a black belt, shoes and wrap. tis a bit less twee/bridesmaidy

sparkybabe · 23/02/2008 21:32

Satin is really hard to wear I think - I certainly can't with my lumps. It creases really easily too, if you are sitting.

NomDePlume · 23/02/2008 21:34

pretty dress, it is a little bridesmaidy but I think you could get away with it if you accessorised properly
